The creation of simulative conceptual models for inf.rmation systems (IS) development is time consuming because of the detailed specifications needed. Simulation (and animation) capabilities should therefore be supported directly by the languages and tools used for conceptual modelling anyway. At the same time, problem domains are becoming more and more complex with several groups of stakeholders participating in the modelling and simulation process. This places stronger requirements on the models and languages used in terms of intuitiveness and view integration. The paper outlines an integrated framework for simulative conceptual models, based on re-interpreted dataflow diagrams (DPD) and entity-relationship (E-R) models in order to reduce the additional effort of simulation. The framework shifts modelling focus from representation of inf.rmational abstractions of the phenomena in the real-world problem domain to the phenomena themselves through facet modelling. In this way, multiple stakeholders' views can be represented simultaneously, while more concrete representations of the problem domain may make simulation results more understandable for non-experts. © 1996 IEEE.

This paper investigates how gray scale inf.rmation can be used in a hydrographic map understanding system to improve the system performance. To process gray scale scanned map images, we have implemented a topographic analysis method and a binary analysis method. In addition, deconvolution of the gray scale map image was used as an optional preprocessing step for both the methods. Both the methods process the input image by extracting binary print components, recognizing long lines, splitting touching digits and recognizing the digits. The topographic analysis extracts the inf.rmation by computing topographic labels for each pixel, while the binary analysis is based on locally adaptive thresholding of the gray scale image. The performance of each method was evaluated by measuring the recognition performance of the digit recognition module. Experimental results indicate that the computationally intensive deconvolution and topographic analysis does not improve system performance. The same high performance is achieved by binary analysis, provided a high quality locally adaptive binary method is used.

Post-processing of character recognition refers to the processing used to correct the errors in character recognition. When the input is a string representing a sentence in the highly precise error correction, it is desired that the syntactic as well as semantic examinations should be made at the sentence level. This paper assumes that the morphemes, syntax and semantics of the input sentence can be analyzed, and proposes a method that uses the syntactic and semantic analysis in the post-processing. The proposed method receives the list of candidate characters up to the fifth, and outputs the sentence that is adequate from the viewpoints of both syntax and semantics. The method features the following three points: (1) in word matching, it is examined also whether or not a sentence adequate from the viewpoints of syntax and semantics can he composed, and then the inadequate words extraction is inhibited;(2) characters having stronger syntactic and semantic constraints, such as the single-character particle and the conjugational suffix, are estimated top-down. Then, the case where the adequate character is not contained in the candidates can be handled;and (3) the words for which the adequateness cannot be determined from the syntactic or semantic viewpoint are selected by character re-recognition processing. An experiment is executed for 50 sample sentences. The character recognition rate is improved from 83.0 percent to 98.0 percent, and the sentence recognition rate is improved from 10.0 percent to 94.0 percent. Compared to the method based only on word matching, the sentence recognition rate is improved by more than 20 percent. In other words, the effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated.

This paper presents a CAC algorithm based on a novel estimation method, called quasi-linear dual-class correlation (QLDC). All traffic calls are categorized into classes. With the number of calls in each class, QLDC conservatively and precisely estimates the cell delay and cell loss ratio of each class via simple vector multiplication. These vectors are derived in advance from the results of three dual-arrival queueing models, namely M(/sup [/N/sub 1/])+I(/sup [/N/sub 2/])/D/1/K, M/sub 1/(/sup [/N/sub 1/])+M/sub 2/(/sup [/N/sub 2/])/D/1/K, and I/sub 1/(/sup [/N/sub 1/])+I/sub 2/(/sup [/N/sub 2/])/D/1/K, where M and I represent Bernoulli and interrupted Bernoulli processes, respectively. Consequently, our QLDC-based CAC yields low time complexity O(C) (in vector multiplications) and space complexity O(WC/sup 2/) (in bytes), where C is the total number of traffic classes and W is the total number of aggregate-load levels. We also use numerical examples to justify that QLDC-based estimated results profoundly agree with simulation results in both the single-node and end-to-end cases.

Security and privacy are growing concerns in the Internet community, due to the Internet's rapid growth and the desire to conduct business over it safely. This desire has led to the advent of several proposals for security standards, such as secure IP, secure HTTP, and the Secure Socket Layer. All of these standards propose using cryptographic protocols such as DES and RSA. Thus, the need to use encryption protocols is increasing. Shared-memory multiprocessors make attractive server platforms, for example as secure World-Wide Web servers. These machines are becoming more common, as shown by recent vendor introductions of platforms such as SGI's Challenge, Sun's SPARCCenter, and DEC's AlphaServer. The spread of these machines is due both to their relative ease of programming and their good price/performance. This paper is an experimental performance study that examines how encryption protocol performance can be improved by using parallelism. We show linear speedup for several different Internet-based cryptographic protocol stack running on a symmetric shared-memory multiprocessor using two different approaches to parallelism.

We propose the use of task based specifications in conceptual graphs to construct and verify a conceptual model. Task based specification methodology is used to serve as the mechanism to structure the knowledge captured in the conceptual model; whereas, conceptual graphs are adopted as the formalism to express task based specifications. Verifying a conceptual model is performed on model specifications of a task through constraint satisfaction and relaxation techniques, and on process specifications of the task based on the resolution algorithm and the notion of specificity.

A noise reduction method for chaotic time series

Intensive studies have recently been made on the noise reduction method for the chaotic time series. In those approaches, the trajectory of the attractor is reconstructed in the multidimensional space from the single-variable time-series data, and then the deviation of the trajectory is corrected. In the conventional method, the noise is assumed to be Gaussian distribution. Consequently, when the outliers are contained in the real data, they are difficult to delete. This paper intends to solve this problem and proposes a noise reduction method for the chaotic time-series data, considering not only the noise with the Gaussian distribution, but also the outliers. A method is devised that eliminates the outliers efficiently using Biweight estimation and similar methods, and a program is constructed based on the idea. The experimental data are constructed by adding the pseudorandom variable with the Cauchy or Gaussian distribution to the chaotic time-series data generated from the Henon map and the Lorenz model. Using these data, the noise reduction experiment is conducted;the relative error, the phase plot and correlation dimension are examined. It is verified as a result that the proposed method can reduce drastically the effect of the outliers compared to the conventional methods, and has nearly the same noise reduction performance as in the conventional methods for the noise with the Gaussian distribution.

We consider the problem of load balancing to illustrate the design and analysis of distributed control based on a generalized form of stabilization. We call this form of stabilization constrained convergence. Constrained convergence yields novel, fully distributed, global load balancing programs which are (i) adaptive, (ii) fault-tolerant and, most notably, (iii) the first such programs to exhibit stability while interacting with any possible environment. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1995.

One of the shortcomings of artificial neural networks (ANNs) is the difficulty in predicting the best control parameters for a certain application. The number of combinations of parameters is very large. This makes it very inefficient and expensive to search manually by trial and error. Genetic algorithms (GAs) are an excellent and effective search technique suitable for this task. This paper describes an investigation into the use of GAs to automate the choice of parameters in both a standard backpropagation (SBP) and a fuzzy backpropagation (FBP) network for different applications. © 1995 IEEE.
