Efficient initial approximations and fast converging algorithms are important to achieve the desired precision faster at lower hardware cost in multiplicative division and square root. In this paper, a new initial approximation method for division, an accelerated higher order converging division algorithm, and a new square root algorithm are proposed. They are all suitable for implementation on an arithmetic unit where one multiply-accumulate operation, can be executed in one cycle. In the case of division, the combination of our initial approximation method and our converging algorithm, enables a single iteration of the converging algorithm to produce double-precision quotients. Our new square root algorithm can form, double-precision square roots faster using smaller look-up tables than the Newton-Raphson method.< >

We study different local area networks (LAN) configurations and their suitability to multimedia traffic. The transfer rates required by multimedia traffic are beyond the typical bandwidth of traditional LANs. The use of switching hubs in LAN configurations overcomes the bandwidth limitation and supports multiple concurrent communications. We present hub-network configurations that provide high performance and reliability in addition to increasing the effective network bandwidth. We study the performance of these configurations using simulation techniques.

Explores neuro-fuzzy approaches to computerized colour recipe prediction which relates surface spectral reflectance of a target colour to several colorant proportions. The approaches are expressed within the framework of CANFIS (co-active neuro-fuzzy inf.rence system) where both neural networks (NNs) and fuzzy systems (FSs) play active roles together in pursuit of a given task. To find an ideal adaptive model for this problem, the authors have investigated a variety of structures, they feature knowledge-embedded architectures and an adaptive FS, which serves to determine colour selection. They have enormous potential for augmenting prediction capability.

The paper deals with Kleenean sanctions defined as fuzzy logic functions with constants. Kleenean functions provide a means of handling conditions of indeterminate truth value (ambiguous states) which ordinary classical logic (binary logic) cannot cope with. The paper clarifies a necessary and sufficient condition for a function to be a Kleenean function. The condition is provided with a set of two conditions, and it is shown that they are independent of each other.

This paper deals with simultaneous control of acceleration transmission, wheel load fluctuation, suspension deflection and sprung mass displacement. The control theory is based on the robust H/sub /spl inf.n// control theory with the consideration of the modeling errors lumped into an unstructured uncertainty acting on the unperturbed plant. The design method is new and powerful for electronic car suspension's control systems, as it presents a new approach to the designers for the computation of a controller maintaining robust stability while guaranteeing the performance in a wide frequency range, even in the case of the controller is applied to the actual plant. Additionally, the paper emphasizes that the assumptions in the modeling step may lead to unrealistic control designs and, as an example, the effect of the rigidity assumption on the behavior of the open loop system is discussed.

Given a set of paths on a tree, the graph with vertices corresponding to the paths, where the corresponding vertices are connected by an edge when two paths intersect, is called the path graph. Given a set A of finite intervals on a straight line, the graph with vertices corresponding to the intervals belonging to A, where an edge is provided when two intervals intersect, is called the interval graph. In this paper, it is shown that the problem to decide whether or not a given path graph can be converted to an interval graph by adding K or less edges is NP-complete.

The trie has the feature that the retrieval can be executed with the character symbols composing the key as the unit, and a high-speed retrieval is realized independently of the total number of keys. Consequently, it used frequently in the search of the natural language dictionary and in other problems. A problem, however, is that the number of trie states increases with the enlargement of the key set, which necessitates a larger memory capacity. To remedy this point, DAWG (Directed Acyclic Word-Graph) is proposed, where the common suffix of the tries is compressed. Then, a new problem arises in that the record inf.rmation cannot be determined uniquely for the key. For this problem, this paper introduces a new structure, where the number of states is reduced by merging the common suffixes of the tries, while determining uniquely the record inf.rmation for the key. The algorithm for retrieval, insertion and deletion of the key is proposed for the structure. In the proposed method, the set of keys is represented using two tries. One of the tries memorizes the prefix of the minimum length that can discriminate uniquely between the key from other keys. The other trie stores the suffixes of the remaining keys in order to merge the common suffix. A simulation is executed for various sets of keys such as Chinese character called Kanji, alphabets and Japanese Katakana characters, and it is seen that the number of states is reduced by approximately 30 to 65 percent for the key set of 50,000 words, compared to the ordinary trie.

To accurately trace the dynamic behavior of the systems to be developed, and to effectively proceed with the systems' performance measures prior to their implementation, are getting harder as advanced technology is employed in the system design process. This situation drives the functional progress in modern modeling and simulation supporting environment. Our study to the trend is concentrated on promoting the efficiency of modeling and simulating diverse application systems. The achievement in the research is the establishment of a frame-based modeling and simulation tool termed FRAMS. The feature deserved by FRAMS is not just high reuse of model resource but great simulation time saving by modeling an application system with a hierarchical, multilink data structure. Currently, FRAMS has been implemented more specific to performance measures on computer systems, however, the design spirit of FRAMS is for general purposes in extensive application areas. © 1994 IEEE.

Diverse modeling and simulation tools are applied in extensive applications. The approaches used range from programming with a specific simulation description language to automation using an icon-driven user interface. The advantage in utilizing simulation is to assess the system's performance prior to an actual implementation. Functionality, maintainability, and expansibility are the primary criteria used to make a choice of a specific tool. To strengthen these criteria, a general-purpose environment called performance object-oriented modeling and simulation environment (POSE) has been developed. The objectives of POSE are to automatically construct simulation models for the systems to be designed, to efficiently define the system performance measures, and to accurately generate the performance data expected. The environment is briefly summarized and an application study for a multiprocessor computer system is presented. © 1994 IEEE.
