Describes a novel approach to the extraction of geometric features from sonic data. As is well known, a single measurement using a standard POLAROID sensor, though yielding relatively accurate inf.rmation regarding the range of a reflective surface patch, provides scant inf.rmation about the location in azimuth or elevation of that patch. This lack of sufficiently precise localization of the reflective patch hampers any attempt at data association, clustering of multiple measurements or subsequent classification and inf.rence. The problem is particularly apparent in uncertain environments with unknown geometry, such as is found underwater. Moreover, the underwater environment precludes the usual (office-environment) simplification of two-dimensionality. The authors propose a multi-stage approach to clustering which aggregates sonic data accumulated from arbitrary transducer locations in an on-line fashion. It is computationally tractable and efficient despite the inherent exponential nature of clustering, and is robust in the face of noise in the measurements. It therefore lends itself to applications where the transducers are fixed relative to the mobile platform, where remaining stationary during a scan is both impractical and inf.asible, and where deadreckoning errors can be substantial. The approach may be used both for map-building during exploration and for feature identification during navigation.< >

This paper presents two new neuron models with the application to classification. The models, namely RRN (neuron based on residue reduction), and RNSN (neuron based on residue number system), are similar in that all the arithmetic operations are confined in the ring of integers module M(Z/sub M/). Their processing units are identical, that is computing the remainder of its total input. Their inputs are different: RRN uses the traditional binary or decimal representation, while RNSN uses the residue number system, and hence makes it more flexible. Both RRN and RNSN are more capable in classification than perceptron, they can realize many linearly inseparable functions, such as the XOR problem. The difference between perceptron and the neuron models is discussed.< >

We present the design and implementation of a prototype gateway system that bridges the users of computer networks supporting the TCP/IP protocol to Teleview via the X.25 public data networks. During the past ten years several variants of an analysis technique called program slicing have been developed. Program slicing has applications in maintenance tasks such as debugging, testing, program integration, program verification, etc. and can be characterized as a type of dependence analysis. A program slice can loosely be defined as the subset of a program needed to compute a certain variable value at a certain program position. A novel method for interprocedural dynamic slicing which is more precise than interprocedural static slicing methods and is useful for dependence analysis at the procedural abstraction level was given by M. Kamkar et al. (1992, 1993). It is demonstrated here how interprocedural dynamic slicing can be used to increase the reliability and precision of interprocedural data flow testing. The work on data flow testing reported by E. Duesterwald et al. (1992), which is a novel method for data flow testing through output inf.uences, is generalized.< >

In an attempt to explore the orderliness by self-organization among populations, we find the idea can be applied to solve the optimization problem. We illustrate the idea and method with many varieties of the travelling salesman problem (TSP) examples. In our method a simple geometric order of the neurons is implicitly designed for the problem. The loci of the cities are represented by proper templates. The solution of the round tour is displayed by self-organization of the templates on these ordered neurons. We test the efficiency of the proposed method by comparing the statistics of simulation results with an another potential methods. Our method can be extended to both problems of multi-dimensional distributed cities and non-straight route lengths between cities.

A self-organizing map is described. It is called the force directed self-organizing map (FDSOM), and can be used in VLSI cell placement with various constraints on connection and dimension, such that the total wire length and area of the resulting placement are minimized. This procedure combines ideas from force-directed relaxation and the self-organization algorithm proposed by Kohonen. It is particularly suited for such a self-organization problem when those (input) sample vectors are not easily available. A proof of convergence for this model is given. With this property, it can be used in CAM or any other computational task. The experimental results obtained are quite encouraging. All these processes are convergent in a reasonable number of iterations. It is found that the proposed approach is competitive with state-of-the-art algorithms, and uses fewer nodes and connection weights.< >

The no-slot-wasting bandwidth balancing (NSW BWB) recently proposed for dual-bus architectures provides throughput fairness and arbitrary bandwidth distribution without wasting channel slots. The performance of two variations of NSW BWB in the presence of erasure nodes and under one or multiple priority classes of traffic is studied by simulation. For both variations, the effect of the erasure mode locations on the throughputs of the various stations, as well as priority classes of traffic, is examined, and the performance of NSW BWB is compared with the corresponding performance of the bandwidth-balancing mechanism of the distributed queue dual bus. The simulation results reveal some very interesting properties for the first of the two NSW BWB variations that are used to derive analytic estimates of its throughput performance in the general case of arbitrary number of stations and arbitrary location of erasure nodes.< >

VHDL procedures and functions greatly increase the power and utility of the language for specifying designs. While these constructs are being used extensively for modeling, most VHDL synthesis tools limit their synthesis to a single implementation style such as treating them as a component. The authors evaluate four techniques for the synthesis of procedures/functions and discuss their relative merits and demerits. They examine these implementation styles in the light of VHDL signals and wait statement semantics. The results of the various implementation styles are shown on several examples.< >

The authors formally define fuzzy multivalued dependencies on a chosen fuzzy database model. Since functional dependencies have already been extended for fuzzy database models earlier, they only deal with an important integrity constraint, namely multivalued dependencies (MVDs), for the fuzzy relational database introduced by B.P. Buckles and F.E. Petry (1982, 1985). It is shown that the fuzzy MVDs (FMVDs) are consistent and reduce to the classic MVDs when they involve precise attribute values. Some examples are given to show how the integrity constraints imposed by the FMVDs are forced whenever a tuple is to be inserted or to be modified.< >
