The two-dimensional fast Fourier transform (2-D FFT), which has a wide application in areas such as digital signal processing, speech recognition and image processing, require quite high-speed computing to handle a huge amount of data. Many parallel hardware FFT algorithms have been proposed. The paper discusses 2-D FFT hardware algorithms which are implemented on an eight-neighbor processor array. They allow 2-D FFT computation to be processed by iterating a 2-D butterfly operation and a data transfer alternately. These algorithms combine effectively the direct 2-D FFT algorithm and the communication capability of the 8-neighbor processor array.< >

An algorithm for a reconfiguration problem (called the SPA problem) for n*n ordinary processors using spare processors is presented. The SPA problem is to find an assignment of spare processors to faulty processors that minimizes the number of dangerous processors. Here, dangerous processors are nonfaulty processors for which there remains no spare processor to be assigned if one more fault occurs. An O(n/sup 2/) algorithm is developed for a basic SPA problem where 2n spare processors are provided. An extension of the SPA problem is defined, and several interesting properties are clarified in order to solve it. In the extension, the spare processors ae assumed to become faulty.< >

Historically, the only known lower bounds for the NP-complete channel routing problem (CRP) were the channel density and the length of the longest path in the vertical constraint graph. The authors use the two-layer reserved layer model where horizontal wires are on one layer and vertical wires on another. The authors review some previously known lower bounds for the reserved layer model. The proposed bound is tighter than the previously known trivial lower bounds. They also give an effective branch and bound algorithm for finding this improved bound. The approach integrates both vertical and horizontal constraints together to investigate the difficulty of CRPs.< >

The authors describe a layout synthesis system for layout generation from generalized register-transfer schematics. This system uses the SLAM partitioner and the ICDB component server. The system is performed in a completely top-down manner which generates the layout by considering the component layout style, floorplan, and critical paths simultaneously. This improves the overall area utilization and minimizes the critical wire lengths, which in turn yields better performance.< >

The authors describe a fully parallel real-time Mandarin dictation machine which recognizes Mandarin speech with almost unlimited texts and a very large vocabulary for the input of Chinese characters to computers. Isolated syllables including the tones are first recognized using specially trained hidden Markov models with special feature parameters, and the exact characters are then identified from the syllables using a Markov Chinese language model, because every syllable can represent many different homonym characters. The real-time implementation is in Occam language on a transputer system with 10 T800 processors operating in parallel. The overall correction rate for the final output characters is about 80%.< >

In this paper, a class of multilayer perceptrons known as rotational quadratic function neural networks (RQFNN) is introduced. The rotational quadratic function neuron (RQFN), at the center of this class of networks, is a particular implementation of the quadratic function neuron (QFN). Compared with the traditional implementation, the RQFN requires much less fan-ins and thus much smaller cross-connection volume. The economy of the fan-ins and the cross connection volumes facilitates the mapping of the model onto silicon.< >

A novel framework for ASIP (application specific integrated processor) development is proposed. The system accepts a set of example programs written in the C language and their expected data as input, and profiles these programs both statically and dynamically. Then taking advantage of the profiled results, the system decides the instruction set and hardware architectures of ASIP, and synthesizes the CPU core design of the ASIP, as well as the software development tools for the ASIP such as compiler and simulator.< >

A silicon compiler system for layout generation from generalized register-transfer schematics is described. This system uses the SLAM floorplan compiler and the ICDB component server with parameterizable bit-sliced and glue-logic generators. The SLAM compiler partitions the netlist into component sets best suited for different layout styles, such as bit-sliced or strip-oriented logic. Based on a stripped and sliced layout architecture, each component set is partitioned further into clusters to achieve better floorplanning. The ICDB component server is capable of optimizing logic and producing layouts for the component sets according to performance constraints. The component server provides layouts with different aspect ratios and I/O pin location for better floorplanning. Several experiments demonstrate that highly dense layouts can be achieved using this system.< >

Results are presented of empirical evaluations carried out on the RT-CARAT testbed. This testbed was used evaluating a set of integrated protocols that support real-time transactions. A basic locking scheme for concurrency control was used to develop and evaluate several algorithms for handling CPU scheduling, data-conflict resolution, deadlock resolution, transaction wakeup, and transaction restart. The performance data indicate that the CPU scheduling algorithm is the most significant of all the algorithms in improving the performance of real-time transactions, conflict-resolution protocols which directly address deadlines and criticality can have a substantial impact on performance compared to protocols that ignore such inf.rmation, both criticality and deadline distributions strongly affect transaction performance, and overheads such as locking and message communication are nonnegligible and cannot be ignored in real-time transaction analysis. It is believed that these empirical results represent the first experimental results for real-time transactions on a testbed system.< >

A description is presented of work being done to construct a planning system to assist in the performance of multiagent, loosely structured, underspecified tasks. Specifically, the authors present a representation for modeling tasks, agents, and objects within such environments and describe the architecture and implementation of a planning system which uses these models to support cooperative work. A description is given of how this planning system is being used to support further research in areas such as exception handling, negotiation, and knowledge acquisition.< >
