The relationship between switch-level circuit models and the linear electric circuits from which they are abstracted were investigated. This is important in determining the accuracy and consistency of switch-level simulation programs. A precise new definition of magnitude or strength classes is presented, which leads to exact bounds on the accuracy of resistance and voltage calculations with magnitude classes relative to the corresponding linear calculations. The applicability to switch-level networks of standard solution methods for linear networks, including Gaussian elimination and Jacobi iteration, is also examined. The results indicate that the potential of switch-level simulators to provide accurate results is far less than previously thought.< >

The performance of several policies for scheduling real-time and non-real-time messages in a statistical multiplexer is examined. The performance metric for the real-time traffic is the percentage of messages not transmitted within their deadlines; the performance metric for the non-real-time traffic is the average delay. The scheduling policies are: (1) first-come first-served (FCFS); (2) head of the line priority, in which real-time packets are given priority; (3) minimum-laxity threshold (MLT) policy; and (4) queue-length threshold (QLT) policy. Under the MLT policy, priority is given to the real-time traffic when the minimum laxity is below some threshold. The QLT policy gives priority to the non-real-time traffic whenever the number of queued non-real-time packets is above some threshold. Results show that the FCFS policy causes relatively high losses for the real-time traffic while providing relatively low message delays for the non-real-time traffic; the converse holds true for the strict priority discipline. Both the MLT and QLT disciplines allow the designer to explicitly trade off the performance realized by each traffic class by using an appropriately chosen value for the threshold parameter. Little difference is observed in the performance tradeoffs available, so it is concluded that the QLT policy is more practical, as it is simpler to implement.< >

It is shown that velocity storage can be generalized to three dimensions to explain the cross-coupling from horizontal slow phase velocity to vertical and roll eye velocity. The key conclusion is that the eigenvalues and the orientation of the eigenvectors of the system matrix associated with the velocity storage integrator are closely linked to the gravitational field. Gravity appears to maintain the eigenvectors with the smallest eigenvalues, i.e. the principal axes of storage, close to the spatial vertical regardless of head orientation.< >

The ability to map and solve a number of interesting problems on neural networks motivates a proposal for using neural networks as a highly parallel model for general-purpose computing. The author review this proposal, showing how to map combinational optimization problems, including graph K-partitioning, vertex cover, maximum independent set, maximum clique, number partitioning, and maximum matching. They report that performance results are quite encouraging; the solutions for graph partitioning and task allocation problems are comparable to those obtained using heuristics and the running times are significantly lower than those required using simulated annealing.< >

An adaptive spatial filtering for images is presented with application to postprocessing of block coding images. The main purpose is to reduce the degradation in decoded images caused by block coding with no increase in the bit-rate of coding. The filter design is based on some prior knowledge about image edges, D. Marr and E. Hildreth's vision model (1980) and the optimal approximation theory. The experiment shows that the filter is satisfactory, simple, and easy for hardware implementation. It can be applied to all kinds of images encoded by block coding methods.< >
