Programming languages form the interface between programmers (the users) and the computation that they desire the computer to execute. Although studies exist for some aspects of programming language design (such as conditionals), other aspects have received little or no human factors evaluations. Designers thus have little they can rely on if they want to make new languages highly usable, and users cannot easily chose a language based on usability criteria. This SIG will bring together researchers and practitioners interested in increasing the dept. and breadth of studies on the usability of programming languages, and ultimately in improving the usability of future languages. © 2016 Authors.

Linux Unified Key Setup (LUKS) is a popular disk encryption specification for Linux operating system. It is the first time to implement the operations of LUKS with regard to FPGA architectures, which includes PBKDF2-SHA1 and AES128-ECB cipher. The application of this implementation to LUKS password recovering is verified with ARM processor in Zynq SoC. In order to compare the performance against other platforms, we also implement the algorithm on the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 and ATI Radeon R9 200 Series, and multi-core CPU. Our implementation is superior advantage on the energy efficiency index.

Searching for unknown urban events in the hope of making serendipitous discoveries has been the focus of multiple mobile tourist guide and recommender systems. This study investigates how transitory search can be used as an interaction mechanism for making such discoveries on a mobile phone. Our prototype, onMelbourne, returns a changing collection of urban events within physical and temporal proximity based on the setting and adjustment of search sliders by the user. Laboratory tests with 5 participants show that users understand transitory search for urban events and do make serendipitous discoveries. In addition we found that users fear missing out on events not shown by the system, and that the choice of labels on sliders impacts their understanding of a slider set halfway. The contribution of the paper is a better understanding of how transitory search can facilitate explorative behaviour when browsing for urban events on mobiles.

According to the phenomenon of MOOCs gained widespread exposure in the U. S. academic world, the inf.sion of MOOCs into traditional education has become a new trend in Taiwan since 2013. By February 2016, more than 170,000 learners have registered for various MOOC Chinese course platforms, and these platforms have collected more than 500 MOOC Chinese courses. Given that large number of partners and registers are using various MOOC Chinese course platforms, MOOCs have greatly affected education in Taiwan. Besides the government-funding projects, the industry in Taiwan also devoted to the development of MOOCs through providing free MOOCs platforms. The cooperation among industry and government have focused on reforming the spirit of Taiwan's education by applying MOOC courses at all education levels to realize flipped classroom. Observing the MOOCs movement in Taiwan, MOOCs pose a new means of self-regulated learning from K-12 education to higher education levels.

APT attack has caused chaos in society since 2006. Especially, the vulnerability of the inf.astructure is exposed to the outside a lot due to the development of the IT inf.astructure in Korea. In addition, APT attacks targeting companies' major confidential inf.rmation are increasing every year. APT attack causes negative publicity for the company and financial damage. APT is completely different from the problem which most organizations have been dealt with. Cyber-attack threats were visible in the past. But currently, APT attacks were invisible and focused on confidential data. Therefore, we need a new approach to solve this problem. We have to find traces of prejudice in the circumstances, everything seems normal. If we perform a correlation analysis of the log acquired from all the devices, systems and applications, we can easily understand the problems which occur in our inf.rmation systems. Current commercial SIEM has the ability to visualize the correlation analysis and the log. But the security officer takes a lot of time to understand the visualized security logs. Moreover, due to expensive cost of SIEM solution, small companies have difficulty introducing SIEM solution. For these reasons, we have developed a SIEM solution based on open-source program such as D3 component which results in decreasing the cost of the program. In addition, we analyzed the D3 components which can visualize the security logs, and matched D3 components with the security logs. In this paper, we propose the visualization methods using D3 components for analyzing the security logs efficiently.

The development of high-order, finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) schemes for modeling and investigating radio-wave propagation problems are presented in this work. The electromagnetic waves can be reproduced precisely in a well-defined discretized space of any geometry, giving accurate simulation results with reasonable computational resources. Special consideration is given to the correct boundary conditions enforced at the media interfaces, as well as to the absorbing boundary conditions that terminate the FDTD grid in open-region problems. © 2015 IEEE.

In this paper, we proposed a new data hiding method based on diamond encoding (DE) and pixel pair difference (PPD). DE proposes a pixel-wise algorithm which flexibly embeds different base digits to maximize payload and image visual quality. During DE embedding, digits embed in sequence without separately consider smooth areas and complex areas. We propose a method based on human visual system in that human eyes are more sensitive to the change of smooth areas where pixel pairs possess less difference. Embedding secret message in complex areas insignificantly affects visual quality of the image, correspondingly makes the stego image less detectable. The proposed method uses PPD to adaptively embed secret message in complex areas and thus improves DE performance. Experimental results illustrate that our algorithm has the same distortion with DE but provides a better visual quality of stego image. Copyright © 2015 ICST.

When dealing with very large applications in the cloud, higher costs do not always result in better turnaround times, particularly for complex workflows with multiple task dependencies. Thus, resource allocation policies are needed that can determine when using expensive but faster resources is best and when it is not. Manually developing such heuristics is time consuming and limited by the subjective beliefs of the developer. To overcome such impediments, we present an automatic method that designs and evaluates a large set of policies using a genetic programming approach. Our method finds a robust set of policies that adapt to changes in workload while using resources efficiently. Our results show that our genetic programming designed policies perform better than greedy and other human designed policies do.

The paper deals with dynamic energy management for smart-grid powered coordinated multi-point (CoMP) transmissions. Aiming to minimize the expected energy transaction cost while guaranteeing the worst-case users' quality of service (QoS), an inf.nite-horizon optimization problem is formulated to obtain the optimal downlink transmit beamformers that are robust to channel uncertainties. Capitalizing on the virtual-queue based relaxation technique and the stochastic dual-subgradient method, an efficient online algorithm is developed in this context. Without a-priori knowledge of any statistics of the underlying random processes, it is rigorously established that the proposed algorithm is able to yield a feasible and asymptotically optimal solution.

The Maintainability Index (MI) metric was proposed in the early nineties to gauge ease of code maintenance. A high value of MI indicates well-constructed code which is easy to maintain and a low MI, the opposite. The metric has been criticized in the past and more recently for its applicability to code and validity more generally. Very few studies however have explored whether the MI correlates strongly with class features such as coupling, defects or size - features of object-oriented (OO) classes which are acknowledged to be surrogates of maintenance complexity. We explore the relationship between the MI and these four perspectives. Three releases of two Eclipse projects were used as the empirical basis of the study and the JHawk tool was used to extract class-based metrics. Significant correlations were found between class features and the MI for all class features except fan-in which measures incoming coupling and determined externally by 'using' classes, however, further exploration of the data revealed that the application of the MI to an OO paradigm was not particularly successful, due primarily to the inf.uence of class size. For OO systems, we would thus warn against the use of MI as a measure of maintenance.
