computer vision-based surveillance is very important today's security systems to detect, track and regulate the security much better than standard cameras. However, like any other performance measurement systems they have potential pitfalls and technical, ethical, and legal implications must be well understood. The continuous rise in connection and interaction implies that safety of the public especially when navigating roads or operating in public domains is paramount. The conventional approaches to accident identification include observation or reporting from witnesses and always record slow and imprecise outcomes. With the improvement of AI and computer visions, especially with deep learning models such as YOLO, accident detection is changing. YOLO v10 which is incorporated in the surveillance systems, performs real time video analysis to provide object and pattern recognition of accidents including car accidents and incidents involving the pedestrians. When applied to the initial set of annotated accident images, the fine-tuning of the YOLO v10 model enhances its detection capability. The system is in watching the video frames that contain aberrations and issues and alarms are issued when the accidents happen and relayed to the monitoring stations or emergency departments for proper response. The optimized YOLOv10 here delivers a meaningful testing score of 72.3% mAP to outperform the regular YOLOv10 efficiency in incident detection. © 2025 IEEE.

Solid-state drives (SSDs) have become the main-stream storage medium for modern consumer electronics, in-cluding both smartphone and mobile devices, with superior performance and reliability compared to traditional hard disk drives (HDDs). Despite their advantages, the full potential of SSD remains untapped due to the inherent constraint of the underlying NAND flash memory. These constraints call for the need for the flash translation layer (FTL) as the internal management of SSD to work with the constraints of NAND flash memory. With the technology advanced, innovative sub-page and sub-block architectures have been proposed to lessen the constraints and allow flexibility for optimization. Nonetheless, most of the previous FTL designs are either based on the sub-block or the sub-page architectures. The design issues of coexisting sub-page and sub-block within a single FTL receive much less attention. Such an observation motivates us to explore the possibilities of enhancing the SSD performance and lifetime through innovative sub-page and sub-block architectures. With the awareness of both sub-block and sub-page, this paper proposes methodologies to optimize read/write operations and increase the endurance of SSD to fit the storage demands of consumer electronics. This study presents a comprehensive analysis of the existing SSD architecture, identifies bottlenecks, and introduces novel approaches to overcome these challenges. Experimental results have been included to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed strategy.

Team-based capstone courses are integral to many undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs in the computing field. They are designed to help students gain hands-on experience and practice professional skills such as communication, teamwork, and self-reflection as they transition into the real world. Prior research on capstone courses has focused primarily on the experiences of students. The perspectives of instructors who teach capstone courses have not been explored comprehensively. However, an instructor's experience, motivation, and expectancy can have a significant impact on the quality of a capstone course. In this working group, we used a mixed methods approach to understand the experiences of capstone instructors. Issues such as class size, industry partnerships, managing student conflicts, and factors influencing instructor motivation were examined using a quantitative survey and semi-structured interviews with capstone teaching staff from multiple institutions across different continents. Our findings show that there are more similarities than differences across various capstone course structures. Similarities include team size, team formation methodologies, duration of the capstone course, and project sourcing. Differences in capstone courses include class sizes and institutional support. Some instructors felt that capstone courses require more time and effort than regular lecture-based courses. These instructors cited that the additional time and effort is related to class size and liaising with external stakeholders, including industry partners. Some instructors felt that their contributions were not recognized enough by the leadership at their institutions. Others acknowledged institutional support and the value that the capstone brought to their department. Context-sensitive feature selection for lazy learners

High sensitivity to irrelevant features is arguably the main shortcoming of simple lazy learners. In response to it, many feature selection methods have been proposed, including forward sequential selection (FSS) and backward sequential selection (BSS). Although they often produce substantial improvements in accuracy, these methods select the same set of relevant features everywhere in the instance space, and thus represent only a partial solution to the problem. In general, some features will be relevant only in some parts of the space;deleting them may hurt accuracy in those parts, but selecting them will have the same effect in parts where they are irrelevant. This article introduces RC, a new feature selection algorithm that uses a clustering-like approach to select sets of locally relevant features (i.e., the features it selects may vary from one instance to another). Experiments in a large number of domains from the UCI repository show that RC almost always improves accuracy with respect to FSS and BSS, often with high significance, A study using artificial domains confirms the hypothesis that this difference in performance is due to RC's context sensitivity, and also suggests conditions where this sensitivity will and will not be an advantage. Another feature of RC is that it is faster than FSS and BSS, often by an order of magnitude or more.

Conventions and commitments in distributed CSCW groups

Conventions are necessary to establish in any recurrent cooperative arrangement. In electronic work, they are important so as to regulate the use of shared objects. Based on empirical results from a long-term study of a group cooperating in electronic work, I present examples showing that the group failed to develop normative convention behavior. These difficulties in forming conventions can be attributed to a long list of factors: the lack of clear precedents, different perspectives among group members, a flexible cooperation media, limited communication, the design process, and discontinuous cooperation. Further, I argue that commitments to the conventions were difficult due to the conventions not reaching an acceptance threshold, uneven payoffs, and weak social influences. The empirical results call for a specific set of awareness info.mation requirements to promote active learning about the group activity in order to support the articulation of conventions. The requirements focus on the role of feedback as a powerful mechanism for shaping and learning about group behavior.

Appropriation is the process by which people adopt and adapt technologies, fitting them into their working practices. It is similar to customisation, but concerns the adoption patterns of technology and the transformation of practice at a deeper level. Understanding appropriation is a key problem for developing interactive systems, since it critical to the success of technology deployment. It is also an important research issue, since appropriation lies at the intersection of workplace studies. and design. Most accounts of appropriation in the research literature have taken a social perspective. In contrast, this paper explores appropriation in terms of the technical features that support it. Drawing examples from applications developed as part of a novel document management system, it develops an initial set of design principles for appropriable technologies. These principles are particularly relevant to component-based approaches to system design that blur the traditional application boundaries.

Feature-based optimization of beam structures represented by polygonal meshes

In this paper, a new shape optimization approach, feature-based optimization of beam structures, is proposed to provide an efficient optimization solution of beam components in complex mechanical structures represented by polygonal meshes. Our approach consists of two main steps: 1) feature recognition of beam components: 2) gradient-based shape optimization of these components by reducing a weighted compliance among all load cases. The main contribution is to propose a new scheme to automate time-consuming shape optimization processes on polygonal meshes with beam components. Numerical experiments have been conducted and the results indicate the effectiveness of the approach.

The JPEG compression method is one of the most popular compression schemes. There are many hardware and software systems based on the JPEG compression standard. This is an indication that the format is still very important before these systems become outdate. This paper presents an adaptive regression method applied to the standard JPEG compression for archiving higher compression ratios. Besides, an interesting coding scheme, Golomb-Rice coding, is introduced also for improve the JPEG standard. Since the coding scheme is not based on frequency analysis from certain of images to gain a codebook, the decoded images that are encoded with this scheme are assured in average quality. The standard JPEG compression scheme can import these two for higher compression rates or wider application fields. © 2009 IEEE.
