This paper focuses on the effects of applying quantization during training to Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) used in Simplified Molecular-Input Line-Entry System (SMILES) generation, a form of line notation for molecular information used in the development of pharmaceutical drugs, from the PubChem database. It offers the flexibility to choose the precision used by the model, by defining the number of bits at each layer. The RNNs are the focus of the current study, by comparing the performance of three of the most used algorithms, Simple RNN, Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), and Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU). The models were trained on a selection of SMILES. By exploiting the QK-eras library, quantization performance was compared to their floating-point equivalent for several combinations of parameters. The goal of the testing program developed is to generate a large number of novel SMILES, facilitating the process of Drug Discovery which is traditionally long, and thus very expensive and difficult. By understanding how the behavior of quantized networks deviates from the regular model, in relation to the parameters used, we are able to control the process of choosing whether to quantize a model and to which degree it becomes more or less efficient. In this study, we observed good performance even for 4-bit models making use of LSTM and GRU layers, the same way we concluded that Simple RNN quantization does not compensate the effort. © 2023 IEEE.

In recent years, wireless rechargeable sensor networks (WRSNs) have become more popular because of its diverse array of applications. However, the limited energy resources of individual sensors pose a significant challenge in maintaining network operations over an extended period. To address this challenge, this research paper presents an energy-efficient scheduling scheme based on distance based scheduling for mobile charging vehicle (MCV) in WRSNs. The proposed scheme capitalizes on the MCV, allowing them to dynamically adjust their charging schedules to cater to the energy demands of sensor nodes (SNs). By efficiently allocating charging tasks to MCV, the scheme aims to balance the energy distribution and mitigate the energy imbalance across the network. By conducting comprehensive simulations with various scenarios, the proposed scheme has been compared with some existing schemes in relation to charging path length, total energy received and charging utility. The simulation results manifest significant advantages of the proposed scheme. © 2024 IEEE.

Pilot vehicle interfaces on aircraft, similar to the automobile digital displays found in automobiles, are used to present the current status of various systems (e.g., navigation, engine information). Aircraft interfaces exhibit deterministic behavior due to safety concerns, ensuring that user input yields predictable outputs. Consequently, integrating text-based pattern recognition or artificial neural network based solutions to aircraft systems are challenging because of their deterministic nature. In this paper, an approach complementary to the existing user interface models is proposed. This approach is based on learning recurring user interactions during flight. It utilizes text-based pattern recognition and prediction models based on user interaction logs and sensor readings. Test results on sample data suggest that the proposed approach yields faster and context-aware user interaction model that decreases the time needed to perform tasks in the aircraft cockpit, where timing is crucial. © 2023 IEEE.

In human, skin tone is significantly varying from one extend (darkest) to other (lightest) due to the difference in the amount of pigmentation (melanin). Even though skin color detection and segmentation is the challenging and complex task which finds applications in face recognition, human tracking, video conferencing, content based image retrieval. The variation in the pigmentation is the consequence of the exposure to the amount of solar radiation and heredity. The segmentation is the clustering process wherein the whole image is clustered into small groups according to the color or texture characteristics. The attainment of image analysis is exclusively based on the upshot of the segmentation. The proposed segmentation procedure is provocative due to the attributes like illumination, the characteristics of the image capturing device, ethnicity and individual characteristics. In skin color segmentation, pixels clustered as the skinny or non-skin pixels. The proposed method utilized HSV color model as a tool for the skin tone detection and segmentation. The outcome of the proposed system is weighed against with RGB color model. Experimental results clearly illustrated that the proposed method has a very good efficiency to segment skin color pixels. © 2023 IEEE.

Satellite communications have become essential in several domains such as broadcasting, navigation, and military applications. However, wireless communications including satellite communications are vulnerable to eavesdropping by malicious users. In this paper, we propose artificial noise assisted low earth orbit (LEO) satellite scheduling to enhance the secrecy of satellite communications. Further, we evaluate our proposed scheme through extensive simulations in terms of the secrecy rate and finally provide intuition to design future satellite communication systems from the aspect of security. © 2024 IEEE.

Voltage stability in the distribution system is jeopardized by the growing number of DG connections. Stabilize voltage via reactive power compensators like STATCOM. The intricate design of STATCOM's distribution system makes installation a challenging task. If not properly positioned, the system's economic efficiency and availability might be negatively affected. This work proposes a method for Virtual STATCOM Configuration and Control that enables several DGs to function as a single STATCOM. Virtual STATCOM makes advantage of preexisting power facilities rather than constructing new ones. This eliminates the complexity in the distribution system, which is a major obstacle to installation, and makes it cost-effective. In contrast to traditional STATCOM, which only manages the power quality-of the access-point, E-STATCOM regulates a large number of DGs connected to the system in order to modify the PCC's power quality. A linear programming configuration is used to set up the Virtual STATCOM integrated control mechanism. This accounts for the variations in power production, inverter capacity, and distance between DG and PCC. © 2023 IEEE.

Long Short-Term Memory and Gated Recurrent Unit-based networks are examined for short-term load forecasting for the Greek power system, where predictions of the next hour's load are made for the whole year. The recurrent property of the forecasters has the advantage to allow the use of a reduced input set since no prior knowledge of the most suitable previous loads is required for the model to identify the temporal relations that exist in the load time-series. An extensive simulation analysis is conducted, to evaluate the forecasters' performance and to highlight their particular learning characteristics. Both deep learning-based forecasters perform very efficiently, with LSTM achieving an average percentage error of 1.18% and a root mean squared error of 83.8 MW, while GRU performs similarly with respective values of 1.17% and 83.4 MW. © 2023 IEEE.

Power quality issues, including voltage sags, swells, harmonic distortion, oscillatory voltage transients, etc. can degrade equipment performance, leading to inefficiencies and costly disruptions. Studying these issues and introducing solutions are essential for maintaining the reliability and efficiency of modern distribution systems. This paper examines and contrasts the benefits of a bidirectional three-stage solid-state transformer (SST) in mitigating power quality issues to traditional transformers. SST introduces reactive power support to improve the system quality by controlling active and reactive power. This paper investigates key power quality issues-voltage sag, swell, harmonic distortion, and oscillatory transients-arising from capacitor bank energizing, focusing on the novel application of solid-state transformers (SSTs) in mitigating these effects. Additionally, it examines SST-based fault isolation across various fault types (three-phase, double line-to-ground, and line-to-ground). Several simulations have been performed using the MATLAB/Simulink platform to highlight the benefits of the Solid-State Transformer (SST) over conventional transformers and cascade multiple-active-bridge SST (CMABSST) types. The proposed SST employs active and reactive power control to alleviate these effects, allowing the SST controller to manage reactive power effectively and provide the required support that makes the system stable and reliable. © 2024 IEEE.
