Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are currently being used in various domains and are the current big revolution. The use of autonomous UAVs is even promising for providing new opportunities. Various applications such as surveying, monitoring, search & rescue operations, and delivery would be beneficial if it is done autonomously without human interference. The performance can also be enhanced if a swarm of autonomous UAVs is used. For each and every UAV to contribute effectively and to reduce the task level complexity of individual UAVs the concept of self-organization could be incorporated into the swarm. Self-organization is an individual UAV performing a simple task without any knowledge of the overall goal but indirectly helping to achieve the overall goal. In this paper, a generalized algorithm to scan or survey a particular field for a swarm of UAVs is proposed. The UAVs will perform their tasks in a self-organized manner autonomously. The proposed algorithm is implemented in python and simulated using webots. The algorithm is tested for various scenarios and it is proven to effectively survey the given field. © 2023 IEEE.

Free space optical (FSO) communication is a fast and wireless data transfer technique that serves as a viable alternative to traditional fiber-optic systems. This study illustrates how FSO can effectively address the growing demand for rapid data transmission and suggests its potential applicability in various scenarios. FSO can be employed to establish connections between buildings within a corporate campus without the need for physical wiring, or it can provide high-speed internet access in locations where installing cables is challenging. We used Optsim software to assess critical parameters such as Bit Error Rate (BER), eye diagrams, power, and signal quality. The results offer valuable insights into enhancing the efficiency and reliability of FSO systems. FSO can find applications in cellular networks to interconnect network equipment, as well as in high-definition video surveillance. These findings highlight the areas in which FSO can advance communication technology and provide valuable insights for future developments. © 2024 IEEE.

Diesel-electric locomotives are equipped with one or more synchronous generators driven by diesel engines, that provide the necessary electrical energy for their operation. These generators are usually provided with some protection relays, depending on their rated power and their type of service. Standard stator-ground fault protection has a setting for rated conditions. In case of variable speed and voltage operation, the protection does not cover all the operation range of the machine. In addition, unwanted tripping may occur due to incorrect filtering of the third harmonic. In this paper, an auto-adaptative stator ground protection function is presented, for the operation of synchronous machines at variable voltage and frequency. A specific case study is tackled, focused on the main generators of a diesel-electric locomotive. Numerous simulations are carried out to verify the proposed protection method. The obtained results are promising, and they can be used in other synchronous machines operating at variable speed. © 2023 IEEE.

In this paper, the performance of various rotor pole configurations in a novel π-shaped stator wound-field flux switching machine (WFFSM) is investigated to address concerns with cost and environmental concerns associated with permanent magnet machines. By employing the finite element analysis (FEA) method, the study focuses on the no-load, on-load and overload performance characteristics of the proposed machines based on four different rotor poles-13P, 14P, 16P and 17P. The 14P rotor configuration emerges as superior machine, showcasing highest torque, lowest torque ripple and best overload capability. The future study will cover full optimization of all four machines with experimental validation. © 2025 IEEE.

This paper delves into the challenges of binary classification using imbalanced datasets, particularly when instances of interest are infrequent. It explores a comprehensive approach that integrates Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique (SMOTE), Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), and Variational Autoencoders (VAEs) to enhance classification outcomes. Traditional classification models tend to favor the majority class, while the impact of imbalanced misclassification costs is often overlooked. The integration of SMOTE, GANs, and VAEs in binary classification, or SMOTE-GAN-VAE, addresses these challenges by generating synthetic instances, refining data representations, and capturing latent features. To evaluate the effectiveness of various data generation methods, a credit card fraud dataset is used. The performance metrics considered include F0.5-score, F1-score, and F2-score, which account for both precision and recall. The results indicate that SMOTE-GAN-VAE outperforms individual methods, such as SMOTE, GANs, and VAEs, demonstrating its potential to enhance data representation and classification accuracy, and outperformed the ß- VAE filtered approach employed in previous literature. © 2024 IEEE.

Electric vehicles (EVs) are surging in popularity globally, offering a greener and more energy-efficient alternative to traditional cars. Our research aims to develop an RFID based system designed to automate EV charging with minimal user input. This system integrates RFID readers, tags, a microcontroller, and a relay module to manage and monitor charging sessions efficiently. An IoT platform supports real time monitoring and remote control, while a secure payment mechanism handles transactions seamlessly. RFID tags identify vehicles for automatic charging initiation, and the relay module prevents overcharging by disconnecting power after a set time. The system uses MQTT for data transmission and offers real-Time insights into energy use and account balances. All information is updated and displayed in real-Time on the server. MySQL ensures scalability, enabling effective handling of large volumes of data. The mobile application dashboard provides a view of the charging and discharging processes for user monitoring, and an email notification is sent after the recharge. EV battery charging status is monitored through visual graphs. Key benefits include a streamlined user experience, improved charging management, and support for EV adoption. This innovation advances sustainable mobility with a user friendly, efficient charging solution. © 2025 IEEE.

As data processing requirements and memory de-mands driven by Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, and In-Memory Database technologies continue to grow exponen-tially, the need for systems with greater memory capacity is increasing. This trend highlights the limitations of traditional Dual In-Line Memory Module (DIMM) interfaces due to CPU package constraints in server systems. Compute Express Link (CXL) technology, leveraging the PCIe interface, has emerged as a promising solution to expand memory capacity and bandwidth. This paper evaluates the performance of ASIC-based CXL memory expanders on Intel's latest server systems. Our experimental results demonstrate that while CXL memory expanders offer significant memory capacity benefits, they also introduce additional latency. Notably, read operations are more sensitive to latency changes compared to write operations, resulting in a more pronounced latency increase for reads. This study highlights the tradeoffs associated with CXL memory expanders and provides insights into optimizing memory configurations for diverse workloads, emphasizing the importance of considering latency impacts on different types of operations. © 2024 IEEE.

The adoption of IoT has raised concerns about security as life-threatening attacks become more common. To address this, ultra-lightweight secure SoCs become a demand to ensure trusted operation in the presence of untrusted IPs while meeting power and area constraints. Integrity, one of the main components of security, is the prevention of protected data modification without detection. Hash functions are used to ensure data integrity in secure systems. In this paper, we propose a low-power implementation of a hash function by using approximate adders in SHA-256 implementation. First, approximate adders’ designs were investigated, where we tested the output uniqueness of each of them, as the output uniqueness of an adder improves the properties of hash results. Then, the chosen adders are utilized for hash implementation. Next, the Avalanche test is applied to evaluate the properties of the proposed hash functions. Synthesis and simulation results show that using an approximate adder reduces the power consumed in the combinational part by up to 66% while the avalanche test results are reduced gradually from 50% to 25%. © 2024 SPIE. Land cover segmentation has a great importance in various fields, including remote sensing, environmental monitoring, urban planning, agriculture, and natural resource management. It involves a division process of a landscape or region into different classes or categories with respect to the type of land cover in each place. With the recent developments in remote sensing area, high-resolution satellite images can be simply acquired. For an efficient land cover segmentation, in this study, a hybrid approach using deep learning architectures DeepLabV3 and ResNet34 is proposed. The proposed method has been trained and tested using the LandCover AI dataset. As a result, 88.2% F1-score value was obtained with the proposed hybrid approach. © 2023 IEEE.

Studies on the Internet of Things have contributed to the development of air quality monitoring applications within the smart city paradigm. Furthermore, fog computing helps eliminate the data density bottleneck that may arise as smart city applications evolve. In this study, a fog computing-based, location-aware air quality monitoring system has been proposed, and its performance was evaluated through preliminary tests using real data. The proposed system is compared with a centralized cloud-based application scenario. The results indicate that the proposed system can serve up to 960 clients in the presence of 120 air quality monitoring stations in the established test environment. Additionally, the study revealed that the proposed model outperforms the cloud-based model in terms of latency and service load stability characteristics. © 2023 IEEE.
