In this work we investigate novel vertical Silicon nanowire (NW) based CMOS technology for logic applications. The performance and behaviour of two nanowire and single nanowire vertical CMOS inverter are simulated and analysed. It is seen that vertical NW MOSFET has a significant performance gain over corresponding FinFET technology. We show that nanowire based vertical CMOS offer up to 80% reduction in layout area, and nearly one order of magnitude reduction in power at the cost of 15% (two wire) and 40% (single diameter single wire) increased delay. The results show that vertical nanowire based CMOS technology has very high potential for ultra-low power applications and offers excellent overall performance for deca-nanoscale CMOS.

The post 1-D analysis for laminated cores is developed for accurate estimation of torque and loss in rotating machines. The nonlinear eddy current analysis along the thickness of the electrical steel sheets in the core is carried out at each element in the main finite element analysis in order to estimate the loss and the harmonic torques caused by the eddy currents and the hysteresis phenomenon in the core. The proposed method is applied for several kinds of rotating machines. It is revealed that the accuracy of the torque and loss at high speed conditions significantly improved by the proposed method compared to that of the conventional finite element method.

We report cell-cell interaction studies utilizing a microfluidic chip capable of capturing cell pairs of different types into culture microwells and isolating the captured cells for a given amount of time using pneumatic valves. We have quantified the capture efficiency and confirmed cell viability and interaction in the microwells. We successfully distinguished interaction modes in the fabricated devices: secretion-based and contact-based. C2C12 cells, when co-cultured with PC3, showed increased proliferation due to PC3 secretions. Also, it was indentified that C2C12 proliferation is increased through contact with endothelial cells by comparing proliferation in both secretion only and contact only systems, respectively.

The future Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) will consist of several tens of telescopes of different mirror areas. CTA will provide next generation sensitivity to very high energy photons over a wide energy range from few tens of GeV to >100 TeV. The signals of the photon detectors in the focal plane will be read out with custom-designed, fast digitization and triggering electronics. Within CTA, several camera electronics options are being evaluated. The FlashCam approach is unique here since data processing inside the camera is fully digital. Signal digitization and trigger processing are jointly performed in one single readout chain per detector pixel. For a group of pixels, such a chain consists of Flash ADCs and a Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) module, both commercially available and reasonably priced. A camera-wide event trigger is subsequently computed in separate trigger units. The camera data is transferred from the cameras over ethernet to a central computer farm using a custom network protocol. Such a fully digital approach using state-of-the-art components provides accurate triggering and an easily scalable architecture in a cost-effective way. The FlashCam team is also evaluating the concept of a horizontal camera integration. Here, the photon detector plane is sustained by a monolithic carrier holding photon detectors, high voltage supplies, and preamplifiers only. The signal digitization and triggering electronics are organized in boards and crates which are kept at the rear side of the camera body. Such an approach allows different photon detectors to be adopted and might result in cost saving.
