In this paper, we present an FPGA implementation of real-time Retinex video image enhancement. Our implementation is based on the previously proposed architecture, which can handle the variational approach of the Retinex theory. In order to efficiently reduce the enormous computational cost required for image enhancement, processing layers and repeat counts of iterations are determined in accordance with software evaluation result. As for processing architecture, our pipelining architecture can handle high resolution pictures in real-time. Our FPGA implementation supports WUXGA (1,920x1,200) 60 fps as well as 1080p60. © 2010 TSI Press.

The ever changing demands on the computational resources have generated the need for solutions that are more flexible. Using a ¿bigger box¿ that has more and faster processors and permanent storage or more random access memory (RAM) is not a viable solution as the system usage patterns vary. A grid based distributed system can solve this problem by allowing multiple independent jobs to run over a network of heterogeneous computing nodes. Keeping the workload represented by these jobs balanced over the network of computers requires network-aware load balancing algorithms that are dynamic and quick. The objective of this paper work is to review the different load balancing algorithms for the grid, identify the comparison metrics for the load balancing algorithms and to carry out comparison between these algorithms based on these identified metrics.

An optical sensor array and its readout circuit for OLED-on-silicon (OLEDoS) are described. A qVGA optical sensor array is implemented on a 0.4 inch VGA OLED pixel array in a 0.18 um CMOS process. A 5-bit single-slope analog-to-digital converter with delta reset scheme is adopted for optical sensor readout circuits. © 2010 ITE and SID.

In line with the popularity of Internet and the development of search engine, users request information through Web-based services. Although general purpose searching such as one provided by Google is powerful, searching mechanism for specific purposes could rely on metadata. We followed SCORM and CORDRA specifications to develop a registry system, called the MINE Registry, for storing and sharing 20,738 Learning Objects created in the past five years. As a contribution, we propose the concept of “Reusability Tree” to represent the relationships among relevant Learning Objects and to enhance CORDRA. We further collect relevant information while users are utilizing Learning Objects, such as citations and time period persisted. The feedbacks from community users are also considered as critical elements for evaluating significance degree of Learning Objects. Through these factors, we propose a mechanism to weight and rank Learning Objects in the MINE Registry, in addition to other external learning objects repositories.

We describe recent work calibrating a cross-dispersed spectrograph with an "astro-comb" i.e., a high repetition rate, octave spanning femtosecond laser frequency comb;and a filter cavity suppressing laser modes to match the resolution of the spectrograph. Our astro-comb provides ∼1500 evenly spaced (∼0.6 A) calibration lines of roughly 100 nW per line between 7800 and 8800 Angstroms. The calibration lines of the laser are stabilized to atomic clocks which can be referenced to GPS providing intrinsic stability of the source laser below 1 cm/s in stellar radial velocity sensitivity, as well as long term stability and reproducibility over years. We present calibration of the TRES spectrograph at the 1.5 m telescope at the Fred L Whipple Observatory below 1 m/s radial velocity sensitivity in six orders from 7800-8800 A. © 2010 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical engineering.

Polishing is a highly skilled manufacturing process with a lot of constraint and interaction with environment. Unfortunately, manual polishing process takes time consuming of the total manufacturing time and takes a significant cost. On top of that, undesired working condition exists due to dust and noise and next it is quite difficult to find skilled technicians. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an automation system on the polishing process. One of the automation systems that are often developed by the industry is the use of robots. The goal is to handle the repetitive work that humans are not able to do so. In general, the purpose of polishing is to get the uniform surface roughness distributed evenly throughout part's surface. This research combines computer vision and robotics systems to overcome the problems arising in the polishing process. Vision system is used to measure surface defect that divide into several categories. The surface data is learned using artificial neural networks then give the decisions to move the actuator on robot. Parameters that developed in this system are force and time polishing which has a significant effect on the polishing process. Therefore, this system studies the characteristics of surface defects before the given action with different value of force and polishing time, and then compared with surface defects after given the action. Results obtained show that it is possible to obtain surface parameters using vision-based methods with a certain limit of accuracy. However, there are some advantages using this system, including faster polishing time, simpler quality inspection, and more evenly surface roughness result compared with manual polishing. The overall results of this research would encourage further developments to achieve robust computer vision technique for robotic polishing application.

Images are powerful means of communication. Adding images to documents, websites, magazines, helps attracting the attention and providing an immediate feeling about the content of the document itself. At the same time, images can be used to influence the attitude of the reader. In the digital era it is easier than ever to create and share multimedia documents making extensive use of visual data. Furthermore, it is extremely easy to modify and adapt the images in order to make them more suitable to convey a concept. These modifications may simply consist in focusing the attention on a specific part of the image, to heavier manipulations such as changing the visual appearance or the contents to bias the opinion of the observer. This creates a rising interest for the availability of automatic blind tools able to detect possible modifications of images, and to correlate these modifications with the relevant impact on the viewer. This paper proposes an example of application of these concepts that exploits a tool for automatic detection of contrast modifications and analyzes their impact on human feeling. The results of instrumental and subjective studies are presented and discussed.

Mobile learning is considered the next step of online learning by incorporating mobility as a key requirement. Indeed, the current wide spread of mobile devices and wireless technologies brings an enormous potential to e-learning, in terms of ubiquity, pervasiveness, personalization, flexibility, and so on. For this reason, Mobile Learning is attracting significant research efforts covering a fairly variety of learning settings, from schools and universities to workplaces and cities. This research has evidenced that mobile technology can offer new opportunities for learners to learn inside and beyond the traditional instructor-oriented educational paradigm. However, mobile technologies are still in its infancy and many challenges arise. In this paper we analyze, from both learning and technological perspectives, the development of learning applications using mobile devices. To this end, proxy and proxy less architectures are considered as way to extend traditional virtual campuses with mobile clients. The objective is twofold: to access learning materials and to support learning activities. A prototype of a Virtual Campus is developed using MLE-Moodle -the Mobile Learning module of Moodle. The proposed Virtual Campus enables mobile clients to perform online learning activities and is a step towards achieving the “anytime, anywhere” paradigm.

Spectral techniques on Abelian groups are a well-established tool in diverse fields such as signal processing, switching theory, multi-valued logic and logic design. The harmonic analysis on finite non-Abelian groups is an extension of them, which has also found applications for particular tasks in the same fields. It takes advantages of the peculiar features of the domain groups and their dual objects. Representing unitary irreducible representations, that are kernels of Fourier transforms on non-Abelian groups, in a compact manner is a key task in this area. These representations are usually specified in terms of rectangular matrices with matrix entries. Therefore, the problem of their efficient representations can be viewed as handling large rectangular matrices with matrix-valued entries. Quantum Multiple-valued Decision Diagrams (QMDDs) and Heterogeneous Decision Diagrams (HDDs) have been used for representation of matrices with numerical values, under some restrictions to the order of matrices to be represented. In this paper, we present a generalization of this concept for the representation of rectangular matrices with matrix-valued entries. We also demonstrate an implementation of an XML-based software package aimed at handling such data structures.
