The paper employs fuzzy automata for emotion control by audio-visual stimulus. In the proposed design, emotions are represented by states, and transition of emotions is controlled by selective audio-visual stimulus. Experiments are undertaken to determine the fuzzy membership for state transitions in the automata. A fuzzy relational algebra has been used to determine the current membership distribution of the emotions from their previous value and fuzzy state transition memberships. Experiments with fifty audio-visual stimulus and one hundred subjects confirm that automatic control of emotion to a desired state from a given state can be attained with a success rate of approximately 86%.

The IEC61499 is an open standard for distributed control and automation. The interface between control software and hardware or communications is achieved by means of the so-called Service Interface Function Blocks (SIFB). This paper presents the guidelines to build communication SIFBs based on the emerging OMG DDS (Data Distribution Service) middleware. This specification implements in a very efficient way the Publisher/Subscriber paradigm providing significant QoS configuration possibilities. These characteristics make DDS suitable for implementing the communications among time-critical devices. By using these DDS-SIFBs within IEC61499 code generation tools, the designers of the distributed applications will be allowed to use this powerful technology in the new distributed applications.

To optimize the energy consumption during transmission in a secure remote fingerprint authentication system, most approaches have considered a fixed-rate compression of WSQ(Wavelet Scalar Quantization). To balance the energy consumption and the recognition accuracy, however, we need to consider the total energy consumption during compression/encryption/transmission and the quality of the given image. In this paper, we first develop an energy-accuracy prediction model. Then, from the given image, we can evaluate the quality of it. Finally, from the user's minimum requirement of the recognition accuracy, the energy-optimized compression rate under the requirement can be derived adaptively. Based on the experimental result, we show that total energy consumption of the fixed approach can be reduced by 29%.

H.264/AVC employs intra prediction to reduce spatial redundancy between neighboring blocks. Different directional prediction modes are used to cater diversified video content. Although it achieves quite high coding efficiency, it is desirable to analyze its drawbacks in the existing video coding standard, since it allows us to design better ones. Basically, even after intra prediction, the residue still contains a lot of edge or texture information. Unfortunately, these high frequency components consume a large quantity of bits and the distortion is usually quite high. Based on this drawback, an Edge-based Adaptive Directional Intra Prediction is proposed (EADIP) to reduce the residue energy especially for the edge region. In particular, we establish an edge model in EADIP, which is quite flexible for natural images. Within the model, the edge splits the macroblock into two regions, each being predicted separately. In implementation, we consider the current trend of mode selection and complexity issues. A mode extension is made on INTRA 16 × 16 in H.264/AVC. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms H.264/AVC. And the proposed mode is more likely to be chosen in low bitrate situations.

A frequency domain correlator (FDC) with low-complexity architecture is proposed. This signal processing module is part of FFT-based acquisition stage of a global position system (GPS). The FDC is based on a single reconfigurable core capable of computing both decimation in frequency radix-2 (DIF-2) fast Fourier transform (FFT) and decimation in time radix-2 (DIT-2) inverse fast Fourier transform (IFFT). The proposed FDC reuses the reconfigurable core together with appropriate decimation choice, providing an improvement in resource management while avoiding any additional reorder data hardware. Additionally, the FDC architecture shows a great flexibility due to three levels of parameterization which allows to fix the number of complex input samples, data width and word format. The architecture has been implemented in Altera Cyclone II and Xilinx Virtex II Pro for N-points correlation with different word lengths. The simulation and synthesis results shows that the FDC is suitable for performing acquisition stage in GPS, enabling its utilization in software define radios.
