In this work, we present a radix-10 division unit that is based on the digit-recurrence algorithm and implements binary encodings (Binary Integer Decimal or BID) for significands. Recent decimal division designs are all based on the Binary Coded Decimal (BCD) encoding. We adapt the radix-10 digit-recurrence algorithm to BID representation and implement the division unit in standard cell technology. The implementation of the proposed BID division unit is compared to that of a BCD based unit implementing the same algorithm. The comparison shows that for normalized operands the BID unit has the same latency as the BCD unit and reduced area, but the normalization is more expensive when implemented in BID.

In this paper, we investigate the use of cooperative communications for reliable data dissemination in wireless sensor networks. We first identify the disadvantages of some existing cooperative schemes. While the previously proposed "multihop mesh cooperative transmission structure" addresses these disadvantages, it suffers from large end-to-end delays during data disseminations due to its random value-based forwarding node selection scheme. This paper proposes a novel distance-based forwarding node selection scheme that yields smaller end-to-end delays. A rate-distortion model for motion prediction efficiency in scalable wavelet video coding is proposed in this paper. The Lagrangian multiplier is widely used to solve the rate-distortion optimization problems in video coding, especially on mode decision and rate-constrained motion estimation. Different from the non-scalable video coding, the scalable wavelet video coding needs to operate under multiple bitrate conditions and it has an open-loop structure. Therefore, the conventional rate-distortion optimization technique is not suitable for the scalable wavelet case. By analyzing the rate-distortion trade-off due to different bits allocated to motion information, we propose a motion prediction gain (MPG) metric to measure motion coding efficiency. Based on the MPG metric, a new cost function for mode decision is thus proposed. Compared with the conventional Lagrangian multiplier optimization method, our experiments show that the new mode decision procedure can generally improve the PSNR performance for, particularly, the combined SNR and temporal scalability.
