The Renewable Energy Sources (RES) penetration in the power system of Cyprus has dramatically increased over the last years. As a result, the system is already facing significant challenges limiting the RES hosting capacity of the Distribution Network (DN). The major limitation factors are network congestion and voltage security. In this paper, alternative solutions for increasing the RES hosting capacity in DNs are reviewed, and a methodology is introduced to evaluate their effectiveness. More specifically, different inverter settings and an advanced centralised voltage control from power transformers are used to mitigate voltage-related issues, while network reinforcements and upgrading the operating voltage are considered for further increase in hosting capacity. The solutions and evaluation methodology are tested using a real MV network of the Cyprus distribution system and the strategic plan of the Cyprus Distribution System Operator (DSO) for maximizing RES hosting capacity is outlined. © The Institution of Engineering & technology 2024.

Blockchain technology offers a secured, digital, decentralized, ever-growing ledger that keeps records tamper-proof. The distributed ledger means that, even if one node is attacked or hacked, data may be accessed from other nodes, making the system more resistant to attacks and ensuring data availability. The hash function is used to strengthen the data integrity. E-KYC stands for electronic Know Your Customer, a way to verify a customer's identity. The banks frequently require the customer's identity documents for verification. Therefore, they spend an unwanted cost, effort, and abundant time during the KYC process. Sometimes, the information stored locally can be misleading. With unique features, blockchain-enabled e-KYC systems can protect sensitive data, reduce data breach risks, and ensure the integrity and confidentiality of e-KYC procedures. With its distributed ledger, blockchain technology stores e-KYC data across nodes and cryptographic techniques and can effectively increase e-KYC safety. Decentralization and immutability make blockchain technology a strong foundation for securing sensitive customer data. Strong authentication and public key cryptographic methods to protect e-KYC data. © 2024 IEEE.

The BART model is an advanced adaptation of transformers introduced by Facebook. It has incorporated elements from both BERT and GPT transformers, enabling significant advancements in language understanding and general speech processing. Utilizing both encoder and decoder components, BART proves versatile for various tasks, including translation, text completion, automatic sentence generation, entity recognition, sentiment analysis, and more. In this study, we focus on the study of pretrained models, BART and a modified version called distilbart, in the context of Zero-Shot Text Classification. In the experimental study we dive into the Zero-Shot technique applied to various pretrained Transformers. Our analysis demonstrates that, depending on the Model we utilize, we can achieve F1 scores of up to 88%, showcasing the model's effectiveness in discerning classes for this Sentiment Analysis problem using the Zero-Shot Text Classification technique. © 2023 IEEE.

In this work, we present PhysioFuseNet, a novel framework designed to enhance driver stress state classification. PhysioFuseNet integrates a CNN-based encoder-decoder model with multimodal biosignal fusion. Using a driving simulator, different multimodal signals were acquired, namely electrocardiography, electrodermal activity, photoplethysmography, and respiration rate from (N = 25) healthy subjects. The experiment is of 35 minutes duration and contains different stress states (baseline (5 minutes), while normal, cognitive, and emotional sessions for 10 minutes). Multimodal features are extracted and employed in an encoder-decoder network. Extracted encoder features are combined through intermediate fusion and fed to support vector machine (SVM) and random forest (RF) classifiers. Experimental results demonstrate the efficacy of our approach, outperforming previous methods by achieving accuracies of 0.95 and 0.94 for SVM and RF, respectively. Notably, the framework excels in classifying emotional and cognitive stress states. In summary, the proposed framework could be useful in stress assessment in real-time and clinical conditions. © 2024 IEEE.

Digital Twin (DT) is a virtual replica of a physical system that is constantly receiving information from different data sources, enhancing its operations and processes through data analytics, predictions and simulations. The development of DTs relies on advancements in cutting-edge technologies namely IoT, Big data, Cloud computing and Artificial Intelligence;and although it was initially conceived in manufacturing, it is currently contributing to the digital transformation of several fields including aeronautics, healthcare, urban planning and agriculture. The existing body of research suggests that it will be expanded in the next few years with the implementation of sophisticated applications, therefore different proposals to achieve collective work between DTs have been investigated. Nevertheless, much research is needed to develop and validate appropriate mechanisms to ensure its successful deployment in complex real-world cases that require collaboration among individual systems. A Federated Digital Twin (FDT) has been identified as a promising solution for this approach, since it allows the interconnection among autonomous DTs in the virtual space, leveraging their advantages and enabling interaction, collaboration and shared learning. Additionally, since a FDT is envisaged as a network of cooperative DTs, cognitive principles can be applied to assist the overall operations through knowledge acquisition and reasoning, leading to an informed and intelligent decision making. This study aims to expand the FDT concept, develop mechanisms for coordination and synchronization based on well-defined FDT goals and connectionism theory. Furthermore, four architectural styles are provided to enable the integration of collaborative DTs within a federated environment, aiming to improve the operations in complex real-world systems. © 2023 IEEE.

Smart Buildings are buildings that integrate and combine intelligence, management, control, materials, and construction as a single system to meet all the needs of the building, such as comfort, energy efficiency, and durability. In universities, laboratories are used less frequently than other facilities and classrooms. Courses and students may change in the same classroom, and the period of use of such classrooms is much more extended than in laboratories. However, classrooms may only be used for classes during long breaks or for short periods of non-use between exams. In addition, there is no provision for when the heating system will start to heat up before classes or when it will be turned off after classes. By planning heating and lightning, energy and costs will be saved. This paper presents data acquisition methods for preparing a dataset to create a machine learning (ML) model to save energy loss in university laboratories. The developed model will predict energy consumption in classrooms and laboratories based on weather conditions. The study is being conducted in two stages. The first stage describes how to collect data using electronic devices such as Internet of Things (IoT) controllers of Smart Building Management Systems. The second stage gave possibilities for data analysis and preparation using the phases of the Cross-Industry Standard Process for Data Mining (CRISP-DM). © 2024 IEEE.

The trilemma trade-off problem between decentralisation, scalability, and security states that in blockchain systems the above properties are negatively correlated. Infrastructure, node configuration, choice of Consensus Protocol, and complexity of the underlying application are cited among the factors that affect the balance of the trade-off. Given that Blockchains are complex, dynamic systems, a dynamic approach to their management and reconfiguration at runtime is deemed necessary to reflect the changes in the state of the infrastructure and application. This work proposes the use of Digital Twins as the means of optimising the trilemma trade-off of blockchain i.e., re-configuring system parameters such as to maximise scalability, decentralisation and security. Specifically, through a bi-directional feedback loop between the system and the digital twin, simulation, what-if analysis and machine learning techniques will be employed for the computation of an optimal configuration given the current system state. Furthermore, a dynamic update mechanism is proposed to allow for blockchain reconfiguration without violating the decentralisation of the system. © 2023 IEEE.

The objective of this work was the investigation of multiscale Amplitude Modulation - Frequency Modulation (AM-FM) analysis based on Difference of Gaussians (DoG) filterbanks representations in order to predict the risk of stroke by analysing carotid plaques ultrasound images of individuals with asymptomatic carotid stenosis. We computed the instantaneous amplitude, instantaneous phase and the magnitude of instantaneous frequency to extract histogram features on each plaque region. The Support Vectors Machine classifier was implemented to classify asymptomatic versus symptomatic plaques. A dataset of 100 carotid plaque images (50 asymptomatic and 50 symptomatic) were tested, and showed that the AM-FM features based on DoG filterbanks and simple histograms performed better than the traditional AM-FM features. Best results were obtained when an eight scale filterbank with a combination of scales was used reaching the accuracy of 75%. © 2023 IEEE.

The technological advances impact the future classrooms and the whole education system. The evolution of 6G promises faster speeds based on terahertz, wireless communication, the leverage of artificial intelligence (AL), virtually reality (VR) and generally a fully connected world. The use of applications of IoT and AIoT improves the education environment, but the intelligent network services undoubtedly gather, store and analyze big data which are vulnerable to attackers. As a solution we may consider the technology of blockchain. The trust and security of next generation intelligent networks are essential part of their design. In this article we suggest a data security system based on blockchain for AL applications in 6G networks. First, we present two Al-enabled applications, indoor positioning and mobile payment within the framework of 6G in the university area. We present the efficiency of blockchain in data security for Al-enabled systems using two case studies of indoor positioning system and mobile payment. The 6G system which is fully supported by Al and the integration of this in technology of blockchain, is ensured the security in future wireless communication. © 2023 IEEE.

The automated and reliable delineation of atherosclerotic carotid plaques in ultrasound (CUS) videos is of significant clinical relevance for management of the disease and the prediction of future stroke events. To facilitate stroke risk assessment, in this study, we propose an integrated software system for the automated segmentation and classification of atherosclerotic carotid plaques in longitudinal CUS videos, which was evaluated using 10 CUS videos, from 10 patients (5 Asymptomatic, AS, and 5 Symptomatic, SY). The proposed methodology involves the following steps: a) CUS video frame (VF) resolution and intensity normalization, b) speckle reduction filtering, c) Motion-mode state-based cardiac cycle (CC) identification, d) deep learning (DL)-based plaque segmentation, e) extraction and selection of plaque region of interest (ROI)-specific textural features, and f) machine learning (ML)-based plaque classification. Initially, one CC (cardiac diastole-systole-diastole) was selected per CUS video, and the CC's consecutive VFs were identified and reduced in number to exclude redundant VFs. All standardized VFs per patient were extracted, cropped and resized to mainly accommodate the ROI and were fed into a priorly trained and evaluated 2-dimensional DL plaque segmentation model. For each VF, the DL-based segmented plaque ROI was projected onto its primary resolution-normalized VF counterpart, from which textural and amplitude modulation-frequency modulation (AM-FM) plaque ROI features were extracted. Statistical analysis on the total AS and SY VFs was used for feature selection.
