A promising approach when dealing with massive data sets is to apply randomized dimensionality reduction and then operate in lower dimensions. This paper deals with the randomized linear regression task in the case where the available data are sporadically corrupted. Instead of relying to minimization of norms, which are robust to outliers, an alternative route is taken. Building upon the observation that outliers can be detected, while operating in a low dimensional randomized projections produced embedding, a mechanism for iteratively detecting and excluding corrupted data is proposed. As a result, the linear regression is performed using conventional LS approximation, without the need to resort to linear programming-based 1norm minimization tasks. © 2015 IEEE.

One of the most critical phases in complex systems design is the requirements engineering process. During this phase, system designers need to accurately elicit, model and validate the desired system based on user requirements. Smart driver assistive technologies (SDAT) belong to a class of complex systems that are used to alleviate accident risk by either improving situation awareness, reducing driver workload or enhancing driver attentiveness. Such systems aim to draw drivers' attention on critical information cues that improve decision making. Discovering the requirements for such systems necessitates a holistic approach that addresses not only functional and non-functional aspects but also the human requirements such as drivers' situation awareness and workload. This work describes a simulation-based user requirements discovery method. It utilizes the benefits of a modular virtual reality simulator to model driving conditions to discover user needs, which subsequently inform the design of prototype SDATs that exploit the augmented reality method. Herein, we illustrate the development of the simulator, the elicitation of user needs through an experiment and the prototype SDAT designs using UNITY game engine. © 2015 Society for Modeling & Simulation International (SCS).

In this paper an efficient e-health platform based on a low-cost sensor controller system is presented, exhibiting enhanced key characteristics able to provide broad coverage of medical scenarios in a reliable and flexible way. The heart of the system is a low-cost sensor controller capable of performing both simple medical tests and more advanced ones communicating with a Gateway and a tablet or smart phone providing instructions to the patient. Equipped with a simple and flexible communication protocol for data and command exchange, the developed platform is capable of readily supporting a variety of sensors with different sampling profiles. Furthermore, first promising results of on-going work pave the way for achieving considerable enhancement of sensors' accuracy (close to high-cost commercial ones) and significant extension of platform's portability through power consumption minimization. These characteristics have been verified by experimenting with various medical scenarios one of which is demonstrated here in detail. Copyright © 2015 for this paper by authors.

The objective of this research is to evaluate the performance of a system of systems optimization algorithm, namely, L4G-PCAO, in building energy systems. Since the test bed of this research is an office building with more than two hundred occupiers, the heating and cooling demands of the building must always be fully satisfied. Consequently, changes in the currently-installed control system cannot be made forthrightly. Therefore, fresh ideas like implementation of new control strategies or optimization algorithms should be firstly put to the test via dynamic simulation, which makes engineers capable of examining new control and optimization strategies. The performance should then be analyzed and evaluated before implementing in the use case. This paper presents a strategy for simulation-based implementation of L4G-PCAO in a building energy system and also evaluates its performance. The results show that it is not only possible to conserve energy by applying this newly-developed optimization algorithm to existing control systems, but also it can shift the usage of energy sources in a more environment-friendly direction.

This letter presents a search for narrow, high-mass resonances in the Zγ final state with the Z boson decaying into a pair of electrons or muons. The s=13 TeV pp collision data were recorded by the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider and have an integrated luminosity of 140 fb⁻¹. The data are found to be in agreement with the Standard Model background expectation. Upper limits are set on the resonance production cross section times the decay branching ratio into Zγ. For spin-0 resonances produced via gluon–gluon fusion, the observed limits at 95% confidence level vary between 65.5 fb and 0.6 fb, while for spin-2 resonances produced via gluon–gluon fusion (or quark–antiquark initial states) limits vary between 77.4 (76.1) fb and 0.6 (0.5) fb, for the mass range from 220 GeV to 3400 GeV. © 2023 The Author(s)

The CP properties of the coupling between the Higgs boson and the top quark are investigated using 139 fb⁻¹ of proton–proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of s=13 TeV. The CP structure of the top quark–Higgs boson Yukawa coupling is probed in events with a Higgs boson decaying into a pair of b-quarks and produced in association with either a pair of top quarks, tt¯H, or a single top quark, tH. Events containing one or two electrons or muons are used for the measurement. Multivariate techniques are used to select regions enriched in tt¯H and tH events, where dedicated CP-sensitive observables are exploited. In an extension of the Standard Model (SM) with a CP-odd admixture in the top–Higgs Yukawa coupling, the mixing angle between CP-even and CP-odd couplings is measured to be α=11−73^∘ ^{∘+52^∘}, compatible with the SM prediction corresponding to α=0.

Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is diagnosed by analysis of the morphological and rhythmic properties of the electrocardiogram. It was recently shown that accurate detection of AFib is possible using beat-to-beat interval variations. This raises the question of whether AFib detection can be performed using a pulsatile waveform such as the Photoplethysmogram (PPG). The recent explosion in use of recreational and professional ambulatory wrist-based pulse monitoring devices means that an accurate pulse-based AFib screening algorithm would enable large scale screening for silent or undiagnosed AFib, a significant risk factor for multiple diseases. We propose a noise-resistant machine learning approach to detecting AFib from noisy ambulatory PPG recorded from the wrist using a modern research watch-based wearable device (the Samsung Simband). Ambulatory pulsatile and movement data were recorded from 46 subjects, 15 with AFib and 31 non symptomatic. Single channel electrocardiogram (ECG), multi-wavelength PPG and tri-axial accelerometry were recorded simultaneously at 128 Hz from the non-dominant wrist using the Simband. Recording lengths varied from 3.5 to 8.5 minutes. Pulse (beat) detection was performed on the PPG waveforms, and eleven features were extracted based on beat-to-beat variability and waveform signal quality. Using 10-fold cross validation, an accuracy of 95 % on out-of-sample data was achieved, with a sensitivity of 97%, specificity of 94%, and an area under the receiver operating curve (AUROC) of 0.99. The described approach provides a noise-resistant, accurate screening tool for AFib from PPG sensors located in an ambulatory wrist watch. To our knowledge this is the first study to demonstrate an algorithm with a high enough accuracy to be used in general population studies that does not require an ambulatory Holter electrocardiographic monitor.

Cooling Load Estimation in the Building Based On Heat Sources

Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) is the largest source of energy consumption. In this research, we discuss cooling load in the room by considering the different heat source and the number of occupancy. Energy cooling load is affected by external and internal heat sources. External cooling load in this discussion include convection outdoor/exterior using the DOE-2 algorithm, calculation of heat using Thermal Analysis Research Program (TARP), and Conduction Transfer Function (CTF). The internal cooling load is calculated based on the activity of the occupants in the office, a number of occupants, heat gain from lighting, and heat gain from electrics equipment. Weather data used is Surakarta weather and design day used is Jakarta design day. We use the ASHRAE standard for building materials and the metabolic of occupants while on the activity. The results show that the number of occupancies have an influence of cooling load. A large number of occupancy will cause the cooling load is great as well.

Disaster-based failures can seriously disrupt any communication network, making its services unavailable. Such disruptions may be caused by natural disasters, technology-related failures, or malicious attacks, and they are observably increasing in number, intensity and scale. When network services that are a part of critical infrastructure become unavailable, commercial and/or societal problems are inevitable. The issue of limiting the impact of disaster-based failures needs to be urgently addressed due to the lack of suitable mechanisms deployed in the current networks. The COST CA15127 (RECODIS) Action will fill this gap by developing appropriate solutions to provide cost-efficient resilient communications in the presence of disaster-based disruptions considering both existing and emerging communication network architectures. It will be driven by researchers from academia and industry in strong cooperation with governmental bodies. In this paper, we highlight the objectives of RECODIS, its structure, as well as planned outcomes.

In this paper, the Open Academic Courses project at the Eastern Macedonia and Thrace Institute of technology is discussed and assessed. This project aims on the development of online courses with various types of educational content, such as e-books, podcasts, video-lectures etc. which are all open to the world. The open courses that were developed as well as the platforms used are assessed both in terms of users' perceptions and courses usage.
