In recent years, the emergence of the fMRI provides a possibility of further exploration for the human brain. The complex workings of the brain are composed of a plurality of brain functional networks. To further explore the change affected by task in human brain functional network, the efficiency of a method of effective connectivity is examined by comparing the two resting state fMRI data before and after a task. Distinguished from the view of the brain network as a whole in previous studies, the method of Granger causality analysis (GCA) we used is focused on the internal organization within a brain network. Also, the method of functional connectivity is used to compare the efficiency of Granger causality analysis. The results show that taking the default mode network (DMN) as an example, the method of Granger causality analysis can be more sensitive to the functional re-organization in a human brain network after a task compared with functional connectivity. And the target of incoming causal influences area changed from rPCu to BG after task.

The development of high-order, finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) schemes for modeling and investigating radio-wave propagation problems are presented in this work. The electromagnetic waves can be reproduced precisely in a well-defined discretized space of any geometry, giving accurate simulation results with reasonable computational resources. Special consideration is given to the correct boundary conditions enforced at the media interfaces, as well as to the absorbing boundary conditions that terminate the FDTD grid in open-region problems.

Understanding how services operate as part of large scale global networks, the related risks and gains of different network structures and their dynamics is becoming increasingly critical for society. Our vision and research agenda focuses on the particularly challenging task of building, analyzing, and reasoning about global service networks. This paper explains how Service Network Analysis (SNA) can be used to study and optimize the provisioning of complex services modeled as Open Semantic Service Networks (OSSN), a computer-understandable digital structure which represents connected and dependent services.

One of the most critical phases in complex systems design is the requirements engineering process. During this phase, system designers need to accurately elicit, model and validate the desired system based on user requirements. Smart driver assistive technologies (SDAT) belong to a class of complex systems that are used to alleviate accident risk by either improving situation awareness, reducing driver workload or enhancing driver attentiveness. Such systems aim to draw drivers' attention on critical information cues that improve decision making. Discovering the requirements for such systems necessitates a holistic approach that addresses not only functional and non-functional aspects but also the human requirements such as drivers' situation awareness and workload. This work describes a simulation-based user requirements discovery method. It utilizes the benefits of a modular virtual reality simulator to model driving conditions to discover user needs, which subsequently inform the design of prototype SDATs that exploit the augmented reality method. Herein, we illustrate the development of the simulator, the elicitation of user needs through an experiment and the prototype SDAT designs using UNITY game engine.

Automated multi-contrast brain pathological area extraction from 2D MR images

The aim of this work is to propose the fully automated pathological area extraction from multi-parametric 2D MR images of brain. The proposed method is based on multi-resolution symmetry analysis and automatic thresholding. The proposed algorithm first detects the presence of pathology and then starts its extraction. T2 images are used for the presence detection and the multi-contrast MRI is used for the extraction, concretely T2 and FLAIR images. The extraction is based on thresholding, where Otsu's algorithm is used for the automatic determination of the threshold. Since the method is based on symmetry, it works for both axial and coronal planes. In both these planes of healthy brain, the approximate left-right symmetry exists and it is used as the prior knowledge for searching the approximate pathology location. It is assumed that this area is not located symmetrically in both hemispheres, which is met in most cases. The detection algorithm was tested on 203 T2-weighted images and reached the true positive rate of 87.52% and true negative rate of 93.14%. The extraction algorithm was tested on 357 axial and 443 coronal real images from publicly available BRATS databases containing 3D volumes brain tumor patients. The results were evaluated by Dice Coefficient (axial: 0.85 ± 0.11, coronal 0.82 ± 0.18) and by Accuracy (axial: 0.96 ± 0.05, coronal 0.94 ± 0.09). © 2015 Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México.

Broadband is a public utility with positive effects on competitiveness, employment and growth. Although evidence shows that broadband development is increasing, this increment is not homogeneous between urban and rural areas. The main cause is the high cost for deploying next generation networks in rural areas, and especially the cost linked to civil engineering works. In order to overcome the investment challenges arising in the context of broadband deployment, the European Commission made mandatory the sharing of existing telecommunication and non-telecommunication infrastructures and facilities. This paper proposes and presents a novel tool that enables the estimation of the expected savings from exploiting existing infrastructures when deploying a broadband network. This is followed by a number of general principles and recommendations that policy makers and national authorities could embrace to diminish deployment costs and promote broadband deployment.

Supporting self-management of patients is a highly challenging task, which needs to meaningfully exploit and interrelate approaches and technologies concerning interactive communication, personalized health and mobile learning. In line with these remarks, this paper reports on the development of an innovative clinical decision support platform for self-management of health and disease purposes. Work presented focuses on two basic components of the platform, namely a web-based collaboration support tool and a mobile application, both aiming to augment the interaction of all types of stakeholders with the platform. The functionality of the above components is sketched through a realistic use case.

This paper presents the progress in the MusiNet research project, which aims to provide a comprehensive architecture and a prototype implementation of a Networked Music Performance (NMP) system. We describe the Musinet client and server components, and the different approaches followed in our research effort in order to culminate in the most appropriate scheme in terms of delay and quality for the audio and video streams involved. We also describe the MusiNet user interface, which allows an integrated communication between the participants and the proposed NMP system.

Induction of formal concepts by lattice computing techniques for tunable classification

This work proposes an enhancement of Formal Concept Analysis (FCA) by Lattice Computing (LC) techniques. More specifically, a novel Galois connection is introduced toward defining tunable metric distances as well as tunable inclusion measure functions between formal concepts induced from hybrid (i.e., nominal and numerical) data. An induction of formal concepts is pursued here by a novel extension of the Karnaugh map, or K-map for short, technique from digital electronics. In conclusion, granular classification can be pursued. The capacity of a classifier based on formal concepts is demonstrated here with promising results. The formal concepts are interpreted as descriptive decisionmaking knowledge (rules) induced from the training data. © 2014 Kavala Institute of technology.
