The paper investigates dual-link fault localization in all-optical ring networks using optical probes (called monitoring bursts). By defining a single monitoring node (MN) in the ring that initiates and terminates a set of monitoring trails (m-trails), the MN can localize any dual-link fault by inspecting the on-off status of the launched optical bursts. We investigate relevant problems in the proposed fault monitoring approach, including m-trail allocation, burst launching time scheduling, and node switch fabric configuration, where constructions are developed to derive optimal solutions and are further examined in numerical experiments. 2(|Ej| - 1) m-trails and at most (2δ + L)(|E| - 1) + δ(|E| - 2) of monitoring delay are required for dual-link fault localization from a single MN in a ring with|E| links, where δ is the burst propagation delay along a unidirectional link and L is the burst length.

Femtocells provide an attractive solution to locally improve the data rates and the coverage of future mobile networks including 5G. However, nearby non-subscribed users may experience severe interference. Hybrid access operation allows femtocells to serve non-subscribers by allowing them access to part of the spectrum. In this work, we propose a distributed process that allows the hybrid femtocell to defines the spectrum access for the two types of users. The mechanism takes into account the prior condition of the users and tries to minimize the femtocell's impact to the rest of the network. We also introduce a power control mechanism within clusters of femtocells. The mechanism relieves the femtocell operating in hybrid access mode and its subscribed users, by coordinating accordingly the nearby femtocells' transmission.

Given their wide applicability, several sparse high-resolution spectral estimation techniques and their implementation have been examined in the recent literature. In this work, we further the topic by examining a computationally efficient implementation of the recent SMLA algorithms in the missing data case. The work is an extension of our implementation for the uniformly sampled case, and offers a notable computational gain as compared to the alternative implementations in the missing data case.

The paper introduces the concept of a fractal-like multimodal transportation network (FMTN) in which several isomorphic subnetworks interact each other via distinguished subsets of common shared workstations as to provide a variety of demand-responsive work-piece transportation/handling services. The set of transportation modes supporting production flows within the FMTN environment is considered. In that context, a fractal-like layout of FMS equipped with AGVS where work-piece flows are treated as multimodal processes can be seen as a real-life example of this model. In opposite to the traditional approach we assume that the given network of local cyclic acting AGV services, i.e. corresponding to distinguished isomorphic subnetworks of FMS layout. The goal is to provide a declarative model enabling to state a constraint satisfaction problem aimed at multimodal transportation processes scheduling encompassing production flows.

This paper deals with the problem of sum rate maximization for a multiuser orthogonal frequency-division multiple access channel with secrecy rate constraints. We consider the case of a multiple-antenna base station (BS) and several single-antenna downlink receivers; a single secure user, a single eavesdropper and several normal users (without secrecy requirements). The eavesdropper intends to wiretap the message of the secure user and the BS aims to protect its transmission by appropriately scheduling normal users and enforcing spatial multiplexing between them and the secure user. A frequency (subchannel) and power allocation problem that aims to maximize the sum rate of the normal users, while a secrecy rate constraint is ensured for the secure user, is formulated. The resulting resource allocation problem is non-convex. Based on the dual problem and some well-defined transformations, we provide an iterative resource allocation algorithm with linear complexity with respect to the number of normal users and subchannels. In addition, two low-complexity solutions that are based on the decoupling of the subchannel and the power allocation subproblems, are investigated. Numerical results are provided to illustrate the performance of all the proposed solutions.

Localization of sources of brain electrical activity from electroencephalographic and magnetoencephalographic recordings is an ill-posed inverse problem. Therefore, the best one can hope for is to derive a source localization method which is guaranteed to find sources belonging to the set of possible solutions to this problem. Recently, a few methods with this property have been proposed as a non-trivial generalizations of the classical neural activity index based on the linearly constrained minimum-variance (LCMV) spatial filtering technique. In this paper we propose a family of reduced-rank activity indices achieving maximum value when evaluated at true source locations for uncorrelated dipole sources and any nonzero rank constraint. This fact shows in particular that this key property is not confined to a selected few activity indices. We present a series of numerical simulations evaluating localization performance of the proposed activity indices. We also give an overview of areas of future research which should be considered as an extension of the results of this paper. In particular, we discuss how new families of activity indices can be derived based on the proposed technique. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.

The MusiNet research project aims to provide a comprehensive architecture and a prototype implementation of a complete Networked Music Performance (NMP) system. In this paper we describe the current status of the project, focusing on critical decisions regarding the system's architecture and specifications, the low delay audio and video coding techniques to be employed, the media relay design, and the synchronous and asynchronous collaboration algorithms to be adopted.

Broadband is starting to be deemed by many as a public utility and several countries have already recognized it as a civil right. The European Commission (EC) acknowledging the significance of broadband services for the improvement of citizen welfare and its economic benefits, has put in place targets for the diffusion of broadband to all citizens and businesses in the European Union. This paper, comparatively assesses the current state of affairs in broadband and digital public services in selected South East Europe countries in order to identify weaknesses and highlight strengths and to produce knowledge resources and provide insights that will support informed decision making including strategy and policy planning. It builds on three surveys that took place in the second quarter of 2013 and evidence gathered from seven South East Europe countries.

In this paper, we consider a multirate teletraffic loss model for the calculation of congestion probabilities in a Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (W-CDMA) cell that utilizes the Bandwidth Reservation (BR) policy and supports calls generated by a finite number of users. The BR policy is used particularly to equalize congestion probabilities among calls of different service-classes. In the proposed model we consider multiple access interference, the notion of local blocking, user's activity and interference cancellation. We show that the calculation of congestion probabilities is based on approximate but recursive formulas, whose accuracy is verified through simulation and found to be quite satisfactory.

In this paper, an Adaptive Projected Subgradient Method (APSM) based algorithm for robust subspace tracking is introduced. A properly chosen cost function is constructed at each time instance and the goal is to seek for points, which belong to the zero level set of this function;i.e., the set of points which score a zero loss. In each iteration, an outlier detection mechanism is employed, in order to conclude whether the current data vector contains outlier noise or not. Furthermore, a sparsity-promoting greedy algorithm is employed for the outlier vector estimation allowing the purification of the corrupted data from the outlier noise prior further processing. A theoretical analysis is carried out and experiments within the context of robust subspace estimation exhibit the enhanced performance of the proposed scheme compared to a recently developed state of the art algorithm.
