Denoising is an essential application to improve image quality, especially in medical imaging. This paper introduces an example and patch-based learning method for reducing Gaussian noise and Poisson noise which often appear in medical imaging modalities using ionizing radiation. In the proposed method, denoising is performed by learning the regression model based on a set of the nearest neighbors of a given noisy patch, with the help of a given set of standard images. The method is evaluated and compared to several state-of-the-art denoising methods. The obtained results confirm its efficiency, especially for heavy noise.

This paper addresses the problem of leader election in virtual traffic lights. A virtual traffic light (VTL) is a self-organizing traffic control system that allows road vehicles equipped with vehicle-to-vehicle communication facilities to implement the function of a traffic light without the support of a roadside installation. Previous research has shown that it is impossible to construct a leader election protocol that guarantees agreement among the participating vehicles in the presence of massive communication failures. The paper addresses the problem of calculating the probability of disagreement in situations where a large number of protocol messages are lost due to communication interference, so-called communication grey-outs. To this end, we present a probabilistic analysis of a family of simple round-based consensus algorithms that solve the 1-of-n selection problem. We propose to use these algorithms for the core logic of a VTL leader election protocol (LEP). Our analysis shows that the probability of disagreement depends on: i) the number of vehicles involved in the leader election, ii) the number of rounds of message exchange, iii) the probability of message loss, and iv) the decision criterion used by the LEP. We propose an optimistic and a pessimistic decision criteria for the proposed 1-of-n selection algorithms. The analysis encompass two probabilistic failure models, one for symmetric communication failures and one for asymmetric communication failures. © 2013 IEEE.

This paper concerns multimodal transport systems (MTS) represented by a supernetworks in which several unimodal networks are connected by transfer links and focuses on the scheduling problems encountered in these systems. Assuming unimodal networks are modeled as cyclic lines, i.e. the routes determining stream-like moving transportation means, a problem of an alternative itinerary selection for an origin-destination (O-D) trip in the context of emergency relief is considered. Emergency relief dealing with the contingency events and deciding on MTS robustness can be evaluated in terms of feasible itineraries for assumed (O-D) trip. Since itinerary planning problem, constitutes a common routing and scheduling decision faced by travelers, hence the main question regards of itinerary replanning and particularly a method aimed at prototyping of mode sequences and paths selections. The declarative model of multimodal processes driven itinerary planning problem is our main contribution. Illustrative examples providing alternative itineraries in some cases of MTS malfunction are presented. © IFAC.

Behavior, including non verbal, expressiveness is an integral part of the communication process since it can provide information on the emotional state and the user's performance when the aim of the interaction is measurable. Long term temporal measurements can also assist in monitoring the user for either emergencies or long term mood instabilities. Current article presents research work on the computational formalization and analysis of full body 3D expressivity in Natural (bodily) Interaction within the framework of Pervasive Assistance. Expressivity dimensions are selected as the most complete approach to body expressivity modeling, since they cover the entire spectrum of expressivity parameters related to emotion and affect. In this study five expressivity parameters are computationally formalized, using different approaches based on silhouette, limbs position and joints rotation, for each expressivity feature. These approaches are then evaluated in terms of their effectiveness in modeling the expressivity aspect in question. The modeling effectiveness of each approach is assessed using Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) and its coefficients on the automatically extracted parameters, defined in the computational formalization, against an experimental dataset consisting of extreme expressions (positive and negative) of the investigated expressivity aspects. The The experimental results confirm that the proposed Fading Silhouette Motion Volumes (FMSV) approach, is the most effective in modeling body expressivity. © 2013 ACM.

The paper presents constraint satisfaction problem driven approach to analytical solution of the cyclic scheduling problem in the Flexible Manufacturing System(FMS) producing multi-type parts where for material handling are used the Automated Guide Vehicles Systems(AGVS). Finding the conditions guaranteeing the AGVs deadlock-free and collision-free movement policy is the aim of our researches. The AGVs co-sharing the common parts of the transportation route while executing repetitive processes, i.e. being assigned to AGVs passing along machines in a cyclic way, can be modeled in terms of Cyclic Concurrent Process Systems(CCPS). Schedulability analysis for a given CCPS answers the question whether a cyclic schedule exists or not. The paper suggests approach for schedulability analysis of multimodal processes representing real manufacturing employing the declarative modeling.

Many countries, European and worldwide, have increasingly issued during the last decade electronically readable identity documents to their citizens, for different purposes and applications. However, a major characteristic of all these systems is that they are basically available in a national context. For example, European citizens that move freely through the Member-States face the problem that their eIDs from their home state do not allow access to services of another Member-State in which they are temporarily present. Public Administrations are also unable to provide services to European citizens from other Member-States with the same ease and efficiency as they do to their national citizens. In order to avoid such confusing situations, cross-border services should be fully integrated in the national/regional and local information systems. It is, therefore, an important task to improve the cross-border interoperability of electronic identification and authentication systems. ENISA, the European agency for the security of computer systems and networks, recently published a report dealing with an important aspect of this problem: the security issues in cross-border electronic authentication. The report assesses the risks of electronic authentication in cross-border solutions and provides a generic implementation model. This paper describes an implementation methodology for addressing the cross-border interoperability of electronic authentication problem, based on the ENISA generic model. The proposed implementation methodology has been based on the successful NETC@RDS project approach and experience, described herein. This methodology can provide a suitable secure cross-border, multi-purpose authentication implementation based on the aforementioned generic model that can be used in various sectors. © IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2013.

Broadband is an important tool for increasing productivity and competitiveness. This paper attempts to measure the accumulative impact and effectiveness of broadband public infrastructures and services on the economy of South East Europe (SEE) areas. To this direction, we focus on evaluating the correlation between broadband and each country's growth and employment. Moreover, we estimate the cost savings achieved by the extended usage of e-services, and we evaluate the potential cost savings that will follow the increase of e-services utilization the next years. The results of our analysis show that broadband may have positive impact on growth and employment and that the possible savings are substantial.

In this paper, a novel fuzzy measure, high order lambda measure, was proposed, based on the Choquet integral with respect to this new measure, a novel composition forecasting model which composed the GM(1,1) forecasting model, the time series model and the exponential smoothing model was also proposed. For evaluating the efficiency of this improved composition forecasting model, an experiment with a real data by using the 5 fold cross validation mean square error was conducted. The performances of Choquet integral composition forecasting model with the P-measure, Lambda-measure, L-measure and high order lambda measure, respectively, a ridge regression composition forecasting model and a multiple linear regression composition forecasting model and the traditional linear weighted composition forecasting model were compared. The experimental results showed that the Choquet integral composition forecasting model with respect to the high order lambda measure has the best performance. © (2013) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

The merging process occurring between humans and the ICT network surrounding them has led to the emergence of several new paradigms in computing. Cognitive infocommunications (CogInfoCom) aims to investigate how cognitive processes can co-evolve with infocommunications devices, irrespective of whether those processes are entirely natural, entirely artificial, or a combination of the two. An important question in CogInfoCom is how communication signals can emerge and evolve naturally between various natural/artificial systems. In this paper, it is argued that the development of new technologies capable of adapting in their communication with users can be informed by research on animal communication. To elaborate this view, the ethological concepts of cues, signals and ritualization are adapted to CogInfoCom. The technological interpretations of these concepts are discussed in terms of design strategies and application examples. © 2013 IEEE.
