Enhancing HCI systems with the capability to detect user's frustration and respond appropriately is a significant challenge. In this line, biosignal features based on the theory of orthogonal Krawtchouk and Legendre moments are assessed in the present work over their ability to enhance accuracy in automatic detection of frustration, which is induced through HCI, during video-game playing. Experimental evaluation, conducted over a multi-subject dataset over frustration detection showed that conventional features, typically extracted from Galvanic Skin Response and Electrocardiogram in the past, achieved correct classification rate (CCR) of 83.59%. Fusing these conventional features with moment-based ones extracted from the same modalities resulted to significantly higher accuracy, at the level of 93%. Furthermore, moment-based features lead also to over 10% increase in CCR when the aim was to identify both bored and frustrated cases, within a 3-classs affect detection problem. The amount of semantic data on the web has been growing rapidly in recent years. One of the key challenges triggered by this growth is the ad-hoc querying, i.e., the ability to retrieve answers from semantic resources using natural language queries. This facilitates interaction with semantic resources for the users so they can benefit from the knowledge covered by semantic data without the complexities of semantic query languages. In this paper, we focus on semantic queries, where the aim is to retrieve objects belonging to a set of semantically related entities. An example of such an adhoc type query is "Apollo astronauts who walked on the Moon". In order to address the task, we propose the SemSets retrieval model that exploits and combines traditional document-based information retrieval, link structure of the semantic data and entity membership in semantic sets, in order to provide the answers. The novelty of the approach lies in the utilization of semantic sets, i.e., groups of semantically related entities. We propose two approaches to identify such semantic sets from the knowledge bases;the first one requires involvement of an expert user knowledgeable of the data set structure, the second one is fully automatic and provides results that are comparable with those delivered by the expert users. As demonstrated in the experimental evaluation, the proposed model has the state-of-the-art performance on the SemSearch2011 data set, which has been designed especially for the semantic list search evaluation.

During the last decade, data management and storage have become increasingly distributed. In consideration of the huge amount of data available in such systems, advanced query operators, such as skyline queries, are necessary to help users process the data. For example, a user who is interested in buying a car wants to find a good trade-off between minimum age and minimum price. It is not obvious how much cheaper a car should be, if it is one year older than another car. Thus, the skyline query will retrieve a set of data items that are the best trade-offs for the user's preferences. The skyline operator has been proposed about a decade ago, but research on skyline queries, especially in distributed scenarios, is still an ongoing process. Query processing in distributed environments poses inherent challenges and requires non-traditional techniques due to the distribution of content and the lack of global knowledge. In this tutorial, we will outline the objectives and the main principles that any distributed skyline approach has to fulfill, leading to useful guidelines for the design of efficient distributed skyline algorithms. More importantly, distributed processing of other query types share the same objectives and principles, therefore several of the guidelines are applicable also for other query types. Furthermore, this tutorial will provide a broad survey of the state-of-the-art in distributed skyline processing, present a categorization of the existing approaches based on their characteristics, and point out open research challenges in distributed skyline processing. © 2012 Authors.

This paper extended the concept of motif by maximum cliques defined as "hyperedges" in brain networks, as novel and flexible characteristic network building blocks. Based on the definition of hyperedge, a naïve brain hypergraph model was constructed from a graph model of large-scale brain functional networks during rest. Nine intrinsic hub hyperedges of functional connectivity were identified, which could be considered as the most important intrinsic information processing blocks (or units), and they also covered many components of the core brain intrinsic networks. Furthermore, these overlapped hub hyperedges were assembled into a compound structure as a core subsystem of the intrinsic brain organization. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

This paper concerns the domain of the multimodal transportation systems composed of buses, trains, trams and subways lines and focuses on the scheduling problems encountered in these systems. Transportation Network Infrastructure (TNI) can be modeled as a network of lines providing cyclic routes for particular kinds of stream-like moving transportation means. Lines are connected by common shared change stations. Depending on TNI timetabling the time of the trip of passengers following different itineraries may dramatically differ, e.g. the same distances along the north-south, and east-west directions may require different travel time. So, the mine question regards of TNI schedulability, e.g. the guarantee the same distances in arbitrarily assumed directions will require approximate traveled time. Considered timetabling problem belongs to NP-hard ones. The declarative model of TNI enabling to formulate cyclic scheduling problem in terms of the constraint satisfaction one is our main contribution. At last, the simulated results manifest the promising properties of the proposed model. © 2012 IFAC.

The Semantic Web represents an initiative to improve the current Web, by augmenting content with semantics and encouraging cooperation among human and software agents. The development of the logic and proof layers of the Semantic Web is currently concentrating the related research effort and is vital, since these layers allow systems to infer new knowledge from existing information, assisting them in explaining their actions and, ultimately, increasing user trust towards the Semantic Web. However, there is a lack of applications that could contribute towards developing logic-based applications. Consequently, users resort to inadequate tools that offer syntactic support, without being able to support the user semantically as well. This work presents S 2DRREd, a software tool that introduces a supplementary level of semantic assistance during rule base development. The tool allows creating meta-models of the main notions of the loaded rule sets and assists the user in authoring rule bases, independently of the explicitly chosen rule language syntax. The domain of application is defeasible logic, a type of logic that allows reasoning with incomplete and conflicting information and, as such, it can play an increasingly important role in a drastically dynamic environment like the Web. Automated Bandwidth Allocation across Heterogeneous Networks (AutoBAHN) is a tool under active development that supports a Bandwidth on Demand (BoD) service, intended to operate in a multi-domain environment using heterogeneous transmission technologies. The AutoBAHN system aims at providing a guaranteed capacity, connection-oriented service between two end points. Due to the level of access that the tool has to critical parts of the network, the importance of a trustworthy Authentication and Authorization Infrastructure (AAI) cannot be overestimated. This paper highlights the design and implementation for the Authentication and Authorization Infrastructure which is part of the AutoBAHN service and the decisions taken. The AAI is a service dedicated to enforce system security and to prevent unauthorized access and usage of resources. The BoD service modules may interact with AAI multiple times during a single request execution. After the initial authentication and authorisation check, the BoD system will apply additional, specific to BoD rules and policies to the request. The security mechanisms allow trustworthy operations in a multi-domain service without significant impact on performance.

Channel estimation in OFDM/OQAM-based cooperative systems is considered in this paper. Cooperation is based on a single AF relay, and a well established two-phase protocol is adopted for its operation. The problem of optimally designing the preambles in the two phases is investigated for LS channel estimation, where optimality is in the sense of minimum MSE subject to a transmit energy constraint. Optimal conditions are derived for the energy allocations and positions of the pilot symbols. Equalization is also considered, where a relay-induced interference term is identified at the destination node. A simple cancellation procedure is proposed and evaluated. Simulation results are reported that corroborate the analysis and provide a comparison with the corresponding CP-OFDM system.

An important issue faced by Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) application is scalability. Each SaaS application is typically shared by multiple (tens or hundreds) organizations (tenants). Each tenant may have hundreds or thousands of users. Thus, the number of concurrent accesses is high. Handling a large number of user requests effectively is critical for SaaS applications. Various aspects of SaaS can have a significant impact on its scalability, including levels of scalability mechanisms, automated migration, tenant awareness, workload support, fault-tolerance and recovery, software architecture and database access. This paper identifies scalability factors and discusses their impacts on the scalability of SaaS applications. Existing approaches for addressing the scalibility of SaaS applications are also analyzed, and this paper suggests some alternatives to improve SaaS scalability based on the factors identified. © 2012 IEEE.

Modality is a key facet in medical image retrieval, as a user is likely interested in only one of e.g. radiology images, flowcharts, and pathology photos. While assessing image modality is trivial for humans, reliable automatic methods are required to deal with large un-annotated image bases, such as figures taken from the millions of scientific publications. We present a multi-disciplinary approach to tackle the classification problem by combining image features, meta-data, textual and referential information. We test our system's accuracy on the ImageCLEF 2011medicalmodality classification data set. We show that using sparse coding for the Bag-of-Words image representation and Sparse Logistic Regression on the extracted features significantly increases accuracy. The best method achieves 87.3% accuracy and outperforms the state of the art.
