Modality is a key facet in medical image retrieval, as a user is likely interested in only one of e.g. radiology images, flowcharts, and pathology photos. While assessing image modality is trivial for humans, reliable automatic methods are required to deal with large un-annotated image bases, such as figures taken from the millions of scientific publications. We present a multi-disciplinary approach to tackle the classification problem by combining image features, meta-data, textual and referential information. We test our system's accuracy on the ImageCLEF 2011medicalmodality classification data set. We show that using sparse coding for the Bag-of-Words image representation and Sparse Logistic Regression on the extracted features significantly increases accuracy. The best method achieves 87.3% accuracy and outperforms the state of the art.

Web 2.0 has facilitated interactive information sharing on the WWW, allowing users the opportunity to articulate their opinions on different topics. In this framework, certain practices implement information monitoring systems so as digests, reports on keywords and thematic queries regarding opinions on government decisions to be created. Analysis of rubrics associations, primary semantic and statistical interpretation of the texts is usually carried out. It is, on the other hand, rather difficult to get punctual predicts and estimate sufficiently forum users' opinion strength. In this work we present a methodology which automatically mines and estimates the strength of users' opinions on text forums regarding government decisions. According to our methodology, quantitative features are automatically mined from forum posts and then passed to a Support Vector Machine based classifier where the users' opinion strength is estimated. The proposed methodology has been validated in real data and initial experimental results are presented. © 2012 IFIP International Federation for Information Processing.

We consider the problem of tree template matching in ranked ordered trees, and propose a solution based on the bottom-up technique. Specifically, we transform the tree pattern matching problem to a string matching problem, by transforming the tree template and the subject tree to strings representing their postfix notation, and then use pushdown automata as the computational model. The method is analogous to the construction of string pattern matchers. The given tree template is preprocessed once, by constructing a nondeterministic pushdown automaton, which is then transformed to the equivalent deterministic one. Although we prove that the space required for preprocessing is exponential to the size of the tree template in the worst case, the space required for a specific class of tree templates is linear. The time required for the searching phase is linear to the size of the subject tree in both cases. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

With the development of mobile code frameworks for embedded systems, an application can be structured as a set of cooperating components (agents) that are placed on the nodes of the system in a flexible way. Reducing the network traffic caused by the application components is a crucial issue for the increase in the lifetime of wireless embedded systems, since it is widely known that the communication cost plays the most significant role in the energy consumption of embedded devices. To this end, most placement algorithms place or move an agent towards the center of gravity of the communication workload. However, if the target node does not have enough capacity, the attempt is usually aborted. In this paper, we introduce eviction-enabled algorithms that allow nodes to free capacity by forcing a locally hosted agent to move to another node, even at a loss, to accept a new and potentially more beneficial agent. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that agents are evicted by local hosts to enable beneficial agent migrations and eventually improve the total network cost. In this paper, we provide algorithms tackling the aforementioned problem in a fully distributed manner. We also present and discuss the results of extensive simulations, showing that eviction-enabled algorithms can outperform their counterparts by up to 300%. © 2012 IEEE.

This paper presents human-robot communication for a monitoring support system in an Intelligent Space. An Intelligent Space (iSpace) is a space in which many intelligent devices are installed to observe the user's environment. In this paper, we apply the iSpace observation function to a monitoring system used for maintaining the safety of elderly persons receiving home-care support. In addition, we use a mobile robot as a tool to deliver monitoring results to care assistants. We focus on an ethological approach for designing robot behaviors for human-robot communication. The implementation of these robot behaviors based on an ethological approach, and the results of an experiment conducted to evaluate these behaviors, are then presented. © 2012 IFAC.

It is often discussed that the fourth methodology for science research is "informatics". The first methodology is a theoretic approach, the second one is observation and/or experiment, and the third one is computer simulation. informatics is a new methodology for data intensive science, which is a new concept based on the fact that most scientific data are digitalized and the amount of data is huge. The facilities to support informatics are cloud systems. Herein we propose a cloud system especially designed for science. The basic concepts, design, resources, implementation, and applications of the NICT science cloud are discussed.

Social inuence in social networks has been extensively re-searched. Most studies have focused on direct inuence, while another interesting question can be raised as whether indirect inuence exists between two users who're not directly connected in the network and what affects such inuence. In addition, the theory of complex contagion tells us that more spreaders will enhance the indirect inuence between two users. Our observation of intensity of indirect inu- ence, propagated by n parallel spreaders and quantified by retweeting probability in two Twitter social networks, shows that complex contagion is validated globally but is violated locally. In other words, the retweeting probability increases non-monotonically with some local drops. A quantum cognition based probabilistic model is proposed to account for these local drops. Mobile Ad hoc NETworks (MANETs) are becoming more essential to wireless communications due to growing popularity of mobile devices. However, MANETs do not seem to effectively support multimedia applications and especially video transmission. In this work, we propose a cross-layer design that aims to improve the performance of video transmission using TCP Friendly Rate Control (TFRC). Our design provides priority to video packets and exploits information from the MAC layer in order to improve TFRC's performance. The proposed cross-layer mechanism utilizes Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) measurements along the routing path, in order to make the route reconstruction procedure more efficient. Simulation results show that both the use of traffic categorization and the SNR utilization lead to important improvements of video transmission over the mobile Ad hoc network. More specifically, simulations indicate increased average Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) for the received video, increased throughput and packet delivery ration, as well as reduced average end-to-end delay.

The function of the parahippocampal place area (PPA) is a matter of debate. We investigated this issue in fMRI experiment by 36 normal subjects using two types of tasks: figure and text. Furthermore, the figure tasks contain two kinds of contextual associations: one is among items;the other is among items and their locations which refers to the spatial contextual associations. In contrast, the text tasks contain only item contextual associations - they do not have any spatial information. The results showed that the right PPA located at anterior lingual gyrus and left anterior parahippocampal gyrus nearby amygdala were significantly activated during both figure and text tasks, which indicate that the PPA is more involved in associative information processing. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Sensor nodes in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are prone to failures due to the fragile hardware, malicious attacks, or hostile or harsh environment. In order to assure reliable, long-term monitoring of the phenomenon under investigation, a major challenge is to detect node malfunctions as soon as possible and with an energy efficient approach. We address this problem by using a system-level diagnosis strategy in which the sink issues to the WSN a self-diagnosis task that involves a number of mutual tests among sensors. Based on the test outcomes, the sink executes the diagnosis procedure. This work presents an algorithm for the assignment of tests among the sensors of a WSN that assures the desired system diagnosability and that is aware of energy consumption. We show by simulation experiments that the present approach, as compared to a previous one, enables consistent energy savings on the sensors. © 2012 The Brazilian computer Society.
