Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) are becoming more essential to wireless communications due to growing popularity of mobile devices. However, MANETs do not seem to effectively support multimedia applications and especially video transmission. This paper presents a cross-layer mechanism for efficient video transmission over this type of networks. The proposed mechanism consists of a priority-scheduling algorithm, at the network layer, and the use of the IEEE 802.11e standard at the MAC layer. The priority-scheduling algorithm takes into account the frame type of the MPEG-4 video file in order to provide different priorities to the most important video packets. At the MAC layer, the IEEE 802.11e protocol assigns the highest priority to video applications to reduce delay and packets losses due to other competing traffic. This design is easily implemented in any ad hoc wireless network as an extension on the AODV MANET routing protocol. Simulation results conducted with the network simulator ns-2 show the advantages of the proposed design. © 2011 IEEE.

Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) are becoming more essential to wireless communications due to growing popularity of mobile devices. The integration of mobile ad hoc devices inside vehicles has led to another type of networks, called Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANETs) which are also becoming important. These networks require specialized routing protocols due to their ad hoc nature. The performance of these protocols has been tested for the case of general traffic but not in respect with to multimedia traffic and especially video transmission. In this paper we conduct a number of simulations in order to evaluate the performance of three of the most popular routing protocols for MANETs and VANETs, namely AODV, DSR and OLSR, for different number of simultaneous video transmissions. We use the packet delivery ratio, the end-to-end delay, the packet delay variation (jitter) and the routing overhead as evaluation metrics. The results indicate that the DSR protocol outperforms AODV and OLSR in terms of end-to-end delay and packet delay variation and seems to be the most efficient routing protocol when multimedia traffic and especially video traffic is considered. © 2011 IEEE.

Monitoring trail (m-trail) provides an efficient way to achieve fast and unambiguous link failure localization in all-optical networks. To remove the electronic alarm dissemination, the original m-trail concept has been extended to allow trail status checking at each on-trail node by tapping the supervisory optical signal. By properly allocating such extended m-trails, each monitoring node can ail-optically localize every link failure using its locally collected optical alarm signals. This not only speeds up failure localization, but also minimizes monitoring resources by sharing supervisory wavelength-links among different monitoring nodes. However, the existing ILP design is very time-consuming and could hardly reach optimality. In this paper, we propose an efficient greedy algorithm to allocate the (extended) m-trails and minimize the total wavelength cost Our heuristic is based on a novel "Min Wavelength Max Information" principle which quantifies the contribution of each m-trail on failure localization, and a set of advanced techniques (such as trail-splitting and trail-sharing, etc) to intelligently allocate m-trails. Simulation results substantially attest the superior efficiency and performance of the algorithm in terms of minimizing the total wavelength cost, the required number of m-trails, and the algorithm running time. © 2011 IFIP.

We consider the problem of finding all subtree repeats in a given unranked ordered tree. We show a new, elegant, and simple method, which is based on the construction of a tree indexing structure called the subtree pushdown automaton. We propose a solution for computing all subtree repeats from the deterministic subtree pushdown automaton constructed over the subject tree. The method we present is directly analogous to the relationship between string deterministic suffix automata and factor repeats in a given string. © 2011 Polish Info Processing Soc.

Brain functional network studies have demonstrated the small-world topology as the nature of large-scale spontaneous brain activity. Studies have also revealed that the temporal coherence of spontaneous activity could be reshaped during task-dependent (or post-task) resting states within local spatial patterns such as task-related and the default-mode networks. However, to our best knowledge, it is still a lack of rigorous investigations that whether the small-world topology of spontaneous intrinsic organization remains robust and stable during different resting states. To address the problem, we recorded blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) signals from two rests (namely, pre- and post-task resting states) before and after a simple semantic-matching task, and investigated the preceding task influences on the topology of the large-scale spontaneous intrinsic organization during the post-task resting state. The major findings are that the small-world configuration of spontaneous intrinsic organization remains robust and stable during resting states regardless of preceding task influences. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

Due to its multidisciplinary origins, the elementary concepts and terminology of Cognitive Infocommunications (CogInfoCom) would ideally be derived among others from the fields of cognitive informatics, cognitive psychology, infocommunications and human-computer interaction. As the perspectives of these fields often differ considerably, a unified terminology may provide useful for research in CogInfoCom. In this paper, we propose a set of concepts which unify these various fields, as viewed from CogInfoCom. Two examples are given to illustrate how the terminology can be used to describe CogInfoCom systems. © 2011 Scientific Assoc Infocomm.

Understanding the structure of complex networks and uncovering the properties of their constituents has been for many decades at the center of study of several fundamental sciences, such as discrete mathematics and graph theory. Especially during the previous decade, we have witnessed an explosion in complex network data, with two cornerstone paradigms being the biological networks and the social networks. The large scale, but also the complexity, of these types of networks constitutes the need for efficient graph mining algorithms. In both examples, one of the most important tasks is to identify closely connected network components comprising nodes that share similar properties. In the case of biological networks, this could mean the identification of proteins that bind together to carry their biological function, while in the social networks, this can be seen as the identification of communities. Motivated by this analogy, we apply the Power Graph Analysis methodology, for the first time to the best of our knowledge, to the field of community mining. The model was introduced in bioinformatics research and in this work is applied to the problem of community detection in complex networks. The advances in the field of community mining allow us to experiment with widely accepted benchmark data sets, and our results show that the suggested methodology performs favorably against state of the art methods for the same task, especially in networks with large numbers of nodes. © 2011 ACM.

In this work we build the first BI-RADS parser for Portuguese free texts, modeled after existing approaches to extract BI-RADS features from English medical records. Our concept finder uses a semantic grammar based on the BI-RADS lexicon and on iterative transferred expert knowledge. We compare the performance of our algorithm to manual annotation by a specialist in mammography. Our results show that our parser's performance is comparable to the manual method. © 2012 IEEE.

Using an equivalent transfer function representation (TFR) it is easier to investigate the error properties of state-feedback/observer (SFO) topologies of modern control systems. The TFR is used to explain why an SFO can radically reduce large model errors. Then the same principle is applied together with Youla-parametrization (YP) introducing a new class of regulators. © 2011 IEEE.

The Internet is a universal source of information for its users. However, obtaining desired content has become the main focus of interest rather than the communication with machine endpoints. The increased availability of mobile devices makes such desired access continuous in time and space, adding an extra dimension and level of complexity for satisfying users' needs. Together with the almost ubiquitous availability of computing and storage resources, this has led to efforts that focus on disseminating information to a possibly changing set of consumers. In this paper, we revisit several strands of IP mobility work with respect to the benefit when being seen from an information-centric networking (ICN) angle. We present a set of architecture invariants together with a functional model, both of which allow for formulating the various concepts of mobility from an ICN angle. We furthermore present and evaluate two approaches to support mobility in ICN, a proactive one based on prefetching subscriptions to possible reconnection points of a mobile node and a reactive one based on buffer relocation. Finally, we also outline various challenges in evaluating such approaches, these challenges caused by the paradigm change that ICN constitutes. © 2011 HTE.
