In a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) where the sensors raise alarms in response to anomalous events, we consider the problem of detecting false alarms (i.e. false positives) by using a system-level diagnosis approach. In particular, we assume that a set of τ sensors in a geographic neighborhood generate the alarm, and the sink issues to the WSN a self test task that involves a number of reciprocal tests among the sensors in the WSN. Based on the test outcomes, the sink executes the diagnosis in order to identify the faulty sensors. This work presents an algorithm for the assignment of the tests (i.e. a strategy for the assignment of reciprocal tests among sensors) that assures the desired system diagnosability and that is aware of the energy consumption of the sensors. Simulation experiments show that, as compared to the existing approaches, our approach enables consistent energy savings on the sensors. © 2011 IEEE.

In contrast to traditional predictive coding, Wyner-Ziv video coding enables low-cost encoding architectures, in which the computationally expensive tasks for performing motion estimation are shifted to the decoder-side. In Wyner-Ziv video coding, side-information generation is a key aspect profoundly affecting the compression capacity of the system. This paper presents a novel technique which enables side-information refinement after DC coefficient band decoding in a transform-domain Wyner-Ziv video codec. The proposed side-information refinement approach performs overlapped block motion estimation and compensation, utilizing multi-hypothesis pixel-based prediction. The experimental results show that the presented Wyner-Ziv video codec incorporating the proposed technique yields significant and systematic compression gains of up to 23.22% with respect to the state-of-the-art DISCOVER codec. © 2011 IEEE.

Background: Competitions in text mining have been used to measure the performance of automatic text processing solutions against a manually annotated gold standard corpus (GSC). The preparation of the GSC is time-consuming and costly and the final corpus consists at the most of a few thousand documents annotated with a limited set of semantic groups. To overcome these shortcomings, the CALBC project partners (PPs) have produced a large-scale annotated biomedical corpus with four different semantic groups through the harmonisation of annotations from automatic text mining solutions, the first version of the Silver Standard Corpus (SSC-I). The four semantic groups are chemical entities and drugs (CHED), genes and proteins (PRGE), diseases and disorders (DISO) and species (SPE). This corpus has been used for the First CALBC Challenge asking the participants to annotate the corpus with their text processing solutions. Results: All four PPs from the CALBC project and in addition, 12 challenge participants (CPs) contributed annotated data sets for an evaluation against the SSC-I. CPs could ignore the training data and deliver the annotations from their genuine annotation system, or could train a machine-learning approach on the provided pre-annotated data. In general, the performances of the annotation solutions were lower for entities from the categories CHED and PRGE in comparison to the identification of entities categorized as DISO and SPE. The best performance over all semantic groups were achieved from two annotation solutions that have been trained on the SSC-I. The data sets from participants were used to generate the harmonised Silver Standard Corpus II (SSC-II), if the participant did not make use of the annotated data set from the SSC-I for training purposes. The performances of the participants' solutions were again measured against the SSC-II. This paper deals with the approximate string-matching problem with Hamming distance and a single gap for sequence alignment. We consider an extension of the approximate string-matching problem with Hamming distance, by also allowing the existence of a single gap, either in the text, or in the pattern. This problem is strongly and directly motivated by the next-generation re-sequencing procedure. We present a general algorithm that requires O(nm) time, where n is the length of the text and m is the length of the pattern, but this can be reduced to O(mβ) time, if the maximum length β of the gap is given. In-packet Bloom filters are recently proposed as a possible building block of future Internet architectures replacing IP or MPLS addressing that solves efficient multicast routing, security and other functions in a stateless manner. In such frameworks a bloom filter is placed in the header which stores the addresses of the destination nodes or the traversed links. In contrast to the standard Bloom filter, the length of the in-packet Bloom filter must be highly adaptive to the number of stored elements to achieve low communication overhead. In this paper we propose a novel type of Bloom filter called Adaptive Bloom filter, which can adapt its length to the number of elements to be represented with a very fine granularity. The novel filter can significantly reduce the header size for in-packet bloom filter architecture, by eliminating the wasting effect experienced in existing "block-based" approaches which rely on concatenating several standard Bloom filters. Nevertheless, it requires slightly more calculations when adding and removing elements.

The eighth international workshop on Quality in Database was held in Singapore, on September 13th, 2010 and co-located with the 36th Conference on Very Large DataBase (VLDB). The main objective of the workshop was to address the challenge to detect data anomalies and assess, monitor, improve, and maintain the quality of information. The keynote speech, titled 'SOLOMON: Seeking the Truth Via Copying Detection' was delivered by Xin Luna Dong, AT&T. The author presented the SOLOMON tool that supports the discovery of copying relationships between structured data source to improve data integration features. The goal of 'Deriving Effectiveness Measures for Data Quality Rules' by Lei Jiang, Alex Borgida, Daniele Barone, John Mylopoulos is the evaluation of data quality rules. Peter Yeh, and Colin Puri show in 'Discovering Conditional Functional Dependencies to Detect Data Inconsistencies' an approach that exploits conditional functional dependencies for detecting inconsistencies in data and hence improves data quality.

A test technique and a Built-In Self-Test (BIST) circuit to detect catastrophic faults in RF Mixers is presented in this paper. During test application the Mixer is set to operate in homodyne mode and the DC levels generated at its outputs are used as test observables. These test observables are converted to digital signatures, by a simple embedded circuit, and are used to discriminate fault free from faulty Mixers. The proposed technique has been applied to a typical differential RF Mixer designed in a 0.18μm CMOS technology. Simulation results validated its efficiency to provide a high coverage of catastrophic faults which exceeds 90%.

The Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) technique was inspired by the ants' behaviour throughout their exploration for food. The use of this technique has been very successful for several problems. Besides, Data Mining (DM) has emerged as an important technology with numerous practical applications, due to the wide availability of a vast amount of data. The collaborative use of ACO and DM is very promising. In this paper, we review ACO, DM, Classification and Clustering (popular DM tasks) and focus on the use of ACO for Classification and Clustering. Moreover, we briefly present related applications and examples and outline possible future trends of this promising collaborative use of techniques. © 2010 IEEE.
