Mobile learning is considered the next step of online learning by incorporating mobility as a key requirement. Indeed, the current wide spread of mobile devices and wireless technologies brings an enormous potential to e-learning, in terms of ubiquity, pervasiveness, personalization, flexibility, and so on. For this reason, Mobile Learning is attracting significant research efforts covering a fairly variety of learning settings, from schools and universities to workplaces and cities. This research has evidenced that mobile technology can offer new opportunities for learners to learn inside and beyond the traditional instructor-oriented educational paradigm. However, mobile technologies are still in its infancy and many challenges arise. In this paper we analyze, from both learning and technological perspectives, the development of learning applications using mobile devices. To this end, proxy and proxy less architectures are considered as way to extend traditional virtual campuses with mobile clients. The objective is twofold: to access learning materials and to support learning activities. A prototype of a Virtual Campus is developed using MLE-Moodle -the Mobile Learning module of Moodle. The proposed Virtual Campus enables mobile clients to perform online learning activities and is a step towards achieving the 'anytime, anywhere' paradigm. © 2010 IEEE.

Digital ecosystem is a self-organizing infrastructure for creating digital environment. Similar to natural ecosystems, several digital ecosystems exist. This is due to differentiation and the development of native products and services tailored to specific local needs. Digital content is the core component of any digital ecosystem. As of now, most of the digital content focuses on only two senses. This paper highlights the significance of other senses which are to be incorporated in the creation of digital content to be used in the digital ecosystems. Copyright © 2010 ACM.

The knowledge of the spatiotemporal sensitivity of the human eye can be essential for those practical applications where the communication of an informatical system and a human subject can be crucial (topics: cognitive informatics, cognitive infocommunication), such as intelligent video-coding, driving assistant systems or intelligent instrumental boards. In this paper we will present the spatiotemporal sensitivity of the human eye for achromatic stimuli at photopic light levels. To our knowledge, it is the first comprehensive model that: (1) considers the spatiotemporal transfer function of P and M ganglion cells along the retina, (2) contains the fast adaptation mechanisms (contrast gain control and luminance gain control) and (3) discusses the role of the receptor and post-receptor light adaptation separately. ©2010 IEEE.

The development of agent-based systems grants developers a way to help investors and organizations in building efficient business systems. Terminal Assignment is an important problem in telecommunication networks. The main objective is to assign a given collection of terminals to a given collection of concentrators. In this paper, we propose a Discrete Differential Evolution (DDE) algorithm for solving the Terminal Assignment problem. Differential Evolution algorithm is an evolutionary computation algorithm. This method has proved to be of practical success in a variety of problem domains. However, it does not perform well on dealing with Terminal Assignment problem because it uses discrete decision variables. To remedy this, a DDE algorithm is proposed to solve this problem. The results are compared to those given by some existing heuristics. We show that the proposed DDE algorithm is able to achieve feasible solutions to Terminal Assignment instances, improving the results obtained by previous approaches. © 2010 Springer-Verlag.

Collaborative Web search improves search quality by users' working in cooperation and is a subset of social search. Current Web browsers and search engines provide limited support for it. However, it is easier for experts, who are familiar with some topics, to fulfill they needs through search engines due to their backgrounds, domain knowledge and so on. A sharing experts' experiences approach should be struck based on today's Web browsers and major search engines. This paper presents a convenient way for users to share and utilize experts' experiences through a Web browser toolbar for collaborative Web search. The toolbar can catch search histories and favorites and display recommendations for every user in a popular Web browser through integrating with mainstream search engines like Google, Yahoo!, et al. These collected users' data are uploaded to a recommendation server, in which recommendations are built according to some rules based on an utilizing experts' experiences approach. The toolbar can download some valuable recommendations merging into default search list for prompting a searcher. The core of our proposed approach is a scalable method to measure "to what degree a user is an expert" for a given topic and to detect an expert's experiences based on a hierarchical user profile. Experiments showed that the novel collaborative Web search way is acceptant to users and experts' experiences improved search quality when compared to standard Google rankings. More importantly, results verified our hypothesis that a significant improvement on search quality can be achieved by utilizing experts' experiences. © 2010 IEEE.

Clonal selection algorithm (CSA) is one of the most representative Immune algorithms (IA) and was applied into the protein structure prediction (PSP) on AB off-lattice model, but it required a long time in the calculation. So in this paper, a parallel clonal selection algorithm (CSA) was proposed, which was implemented using distributed computing model that employed OpenMP on four core computer. In the algorithm, several sub-populations replaced the original single population, and each sub-population evolved independently, and the current best individual was distributed into all the sub-populations. The parallel algorithm overcame premature convergence and found global optima efficiently. And the experiment results shown that the performance had been significantly improved. © 2010 Crown Copyright.

A novel hybrid algorithm Quantum Immune(QI), which combines Quantum Algorithm (QA) and Immune Clonal Selection(ICS) Algorithm, has been presented for dealing with multi-extremum and multi-parameter problem based on AB off-lattice model in the predicting 2D protein folding structure. Clonal Selection Algorithm was introduced into the hypermutation operators in the Quantum Algorithm to improve the local search ability, and double chains quantum coded was designed to enlarge the probability of the global optimization solution. It showed that the solution mostly trap into the local optimum, to escape the local best solution the aging operator is introduced to improve the performance of the algorithm. Experimental results showed that the lowest energies and computing-time of the improved Quantum Clonal Selection(QCS) algorithm were better than that of the previous methods, and the QCS was further improved by adding aging operator to combat the premature convergence. Compared with previous approaches, the improved QCS algorithm remarkably enhanced the convergence performance and the search efficiency of the immune optimization algorithm. © 2010 IEEE.

Data mining algorithms have been proved to be useful for the processing of large data sets in order to extract relevant information and knowledge. Such algorithms are also important for analyzing data collected from the users' activity users. One family of such data analysis is that of mining of log files of online applications that register the actions of online users during long periods of time. A relevant objective in this case is to study the behavior of online users and feedback the design processes of online applications to provide better usability and adaption to users' preferences. The context of this work is that of a virtual campus in which thousands of students and tutors carry out the learning and teaching activity using online applications. The information stored in log files of virtual campuses tend to be large, complex and heterogeneous in nature. Hence, their mining requires both efficient and intelligent processing and analysis of user interaction data during long-term learning activities. In this paper, we present a bi-clustering algorithm for processing large log data sets from the online daily activity of students in a real virtual campus. Our approach is useful to extract relevant knowledge about user activity such as navigation patterns, activities performed as well as to study time parameters related to such activities. The extracted information can be useful not only to students and tutors to stimulate and improve their experience when interacting with the system but also to the designers and developers of the virtual campus in order to better support the online teaching and learning. © 2010 IEEE.

Cognitive radio networks are expected to address and resolve important operational challenges such as opportunistic spectrum access, spectrum and network heterogeneities and requests for the provision of diverse Quality-of-Service (QoS) for different applications. This paper advances a new architecture for the management of cognitive radio networks.
