The input to the Shortest Common Superstring (SCS) problem is a set S of k words of total length n. In the classical version the output is an explicit word SCS(S) in which each s ∈ S occurs at least once. In our paper we consider two versions with multiple occurrences, in which the input includes additional numbers (multiplicities), given in binary. Our output is the word SCS(S) given implicitly in a compact form, since its real size could be exponential. We also consider a case when all input words are of length two, where our main algorithmic tool is a compact representation of Eulerian cycles in multigraphs. Due to exponential multiplicities of edges such cycles can be exponential and the compact representation is needed. Other tools used in our paper are a polynomial case of integer linear programming and a min-plus product of matrices. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2010.

The knowledge of the spatiotemporal sensitivity of the human eye can be essential for those practical applications where the communication of an informatical system and a human subject can be crucial (topics: cognitive informatics, cognitive infocommunication), such as intelligent video-coding, driving assistant systems or intelligent instrumental boards. In this paper we will present the spatiotemporal sensitivity of the human eye for achromatic stimuli at photopic light levels. To our knowledge, it is the first comprehensive model that: (1) considers the spatiotemporal transfer function of P and M ganglion cells along the retina, (2) contains the fast adaptation mechanisms (contrast gain control and luminance gain control) and (3) discusses the role of the receptor and post-receptor light adaptation separately.

Mobile learning is considered the next step of online learning by incorporating mobility as a key requirement. Indeed, the current wide spread of mobile devices and wireless technologies brings an enormous potential to e-learning, in terms of ubiquity, pervasiveness, personalization, flexibility, and so on. For this reason, Mobile Learning is attracting significant research efforts covering a fairly variety of learning settings, from schools and universities to workplaces and cities. This research has evidenced that mobile technology can offer new opportunities for learners to learn inside and beyond the traditional instructor-oriented educational paradigm. However, mobile technologies are still in its infancy and many challenges arise. In this paper we analyze, from both learning and technological perspectives, the development of learning applications using mobile devices. To this end, proxy and proxy less architectures are considered as way to extend traditional virtual campuses with mobile clients. The objective is twofold: to access learning materials and to support learning activities. A prototype of a Virtual Campus is developed using MLE-Moodle -the Mobile Learning module of Moodle. The proposed Virtual Campus enables mobile clients to perform online learning activities and is a step towards achieving the “anytime, anywhere” paradigm.

The classical approaches for the traditional problems of text mining, such as document indexing, document clustering or text classification, represent the text as bag-of-words. Words, the units of the representation, are determined by tokenization, using e.g. whitespace and punctuation characters as separator. The bag-of-word based methods face problem with non-segmented text typical for some Asian languages, since the tokenization based solution cannot be applied anymore to determine the representation units. Several solutions were proposed so far, among them frequent max substring mining is adopted here because of its language-independency and favourable speed and store requirements. We present in this paper a fuzzy signature based solution using frequent max substring for non-segmented document representation, and propose how it could be applied for some typical text mining tasks. We show how the flexibility of fuzzy signatures can be exploited for text mining tasks. With the use of this proposed concept, complex decision models in text mining may be constructed more effectively in future. © 2010 IEEE.

Alternating least squares (ALS) is a powerful matrix factor- ization (MF) algorithm for both explicit and implicit feed- back based recommender systems. As shown in many articles, increasing the number of latent factors (denoted by K) boosts the prediction accuracy of MF based recommender systems, including ALS as well. The price of the better accuracy is paid by the increased running time: the running time of the original version of ALS is proportional to K 3. Yet, the running time of model building can be important in recommendation systems;if the model cannot keep up with the changing item portfolio and/or user profile, the predic- tion accuracy can be degraded. In this paper we present novel and fast ALS variants both for the implicit and explicit feedback datasets, which offers better trade-off between running time and accuracy. Due to the significantly lower computational complexity of the algorithm-linear in terms of K-the model being generated under the same amount of time is more accurate, since the faster training enables to build model with more latent factors. We demonstrate the efficiency of our ALS variants on two datasets using two performance measures, RMSE and average relative position (ARP), and show that either a significantly more accurate model can be generated under the same amount of time or a model with similar predic- tion accuracy can be created faster;for explicit feedback the speed-up factor can be even 5-10. In a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) where the sensors monitor the environment to the purpose of raising alarms about the occurrence of some events, we consider the problem of detecting false alarms (i.e. false positives). We adopt a system level diagnosys model, where all the sensors in the region where the alarms have been raised cooperate to execute mutual tests. The test outcomes are given as input to a diagnosis algorithm that identifies the faulty sensors and thus confirms or neglects the alarm. The diagnosis algorithm can succeed in this work if the tests among sensors are sufficient to achieve a given diagnosability of the system, that depends on topological properties of the WSN. This work considers the problem of determining a test strategy of the sensors in a WSN in order to ensure that the desired system diagnosability is met. In particular it is shown by simulation that appropriate testing strategies are successful to guarantee given levels of system diagnosabilities depending of the network topology or its density. © 2010 IEEE.

In force controlled industrial robots, haptic and telemanipulation devices stability and control performance are contradicting requirements. In distributed systems where the sensors, actuators and control logic are separated in space, due to the network delays the control process may become unstable. In our research, we consider the coupled impedance type control algorithms as common used method in telemanipulation and interaction control of robots. In this paper, an extended TP model transformation is proposed to convert the delayed system into a polytopic tensor product (TP) model considering the value of the feedback delay as a parameter. Using such model, controller design become tractable as it does not contain feedback delay. A numerical example for a single degree of freedom impedance model with feedback delay is discussed. The results are confirmed by simulation.

Google has recently released the video compression format VP8 to the open source community. This new compression format competes against the existing H.264 video standard developed by the ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG) in collaboration with the ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG). This paper compares these two video coding standards in terms of video bit rate-distortion (quality) performance and the video network traffic variability with different long video sequences. We find that VP8 presently does not fulfill its promise to achieve twice the quality at half the bandwidth compared to H.264. The rate-distortion (RD) performance of VP8 is rather slightly below the RD performance of H.264. On the positive side, in contrast to H.264, VP8 has no license fees.

In this paper, we present an FPGA implementation of real-time Retinex video image enhancement. Our implementation is based on the previously proposed architecture, which can handle the variational approach of the Retinex theory. In order to efficiently reduce the enormous computational cost required for image enhancement, processing layers and repeat counts of iterations are determined in accordance with software evaluation result. As for processing architecture, our pipelining architecture can handle high resolution pictures in real-time. Our FPGA implementation supports WUXGA (1,920x1,200) 60 fps as well as 1080p60. © 2010 TSI Press.

Data mining algorithms have been proved to be useful for the processing of large data sets in order to extract relevant information and knowledge. Such algorithms are also important for analyzing data collected from the users' activity users. One family of such data analysis is that of mining of log files of online applications that register the actions of online users during long periods of time. A relevant objective in this case is to study the behavior of online users and feedback the design processes of online applications to provide better usability and adaption to users' preferences. The context of this work is that of a virtual campus in which thousands of students and tutors carry out the learning and teaching activity using online applications. The information stored in log files of virtual campuses tend to be large, complex and heterogeneous in nature. Hence, their mining requires both efficient and intelligent processing and analysis of user interaction data during long-term learning activities. In this paper, we present a bi-clustering algorithm for processing large log data sets from the online daily activity of students in a real virtual campus. Our approach is useful to extract relevant knowledge about user activity such as navigation patterns, activities performed as well as to study time parameters related to such activities. The extracted information can be useful not only to students and tutors to stimulate and improve their experience when interacting with the system but also to the designers and developers of the virtual campus in order to better support the online teaching and learning.
