In this research work we investigate the analysis of Acoustic Emission (AE) signals using wavelet decomposition to locate a single event (crack), which usually takes place in three typical areas in a ship hull. The problem is a typical classification problem relying on the use of novel features extracted from the AE time series. As in most classification problems the extraction and selection of the most appropriate set of features plays a major role in the overall performance of the method and it is by no means a trivial task. Once a suitable set of features is extracted even ldquosimplerdquo classification models can perform adequately whereas a non-informative set of features even combined with sophisticated classifiers can lead to disappointing results. Here, we exploit the multi-resolution capabilities of wavelet decomposition, so that a set of features is extracted which it is then combined with a simple classifier. The proposed method gives superior classification rates for noisy environments compared to our previous work where conventional methods for feature extraction were deployed.

A bidirectional transformation consists of a pair of unidirectional transformations: a forward transformation that maps one data structure called source to another called view, and a backward transformation that reflects changes in the view to the source. Bidirectional transformation has many useful applications such as replicated data synchronization, presentation-oriented editor development, and software artifact synchronization. In a previous work, we proposed a framework in which a backward transformation is automatically generated from a forward transformation by derivation of a complementary function if the forward transformation is given by a program in a simple functional language. However, the language has a severe restriction that no variable is allowed to be used more than once. In this paper, we show that tupling transformation relaxes this restriction, allowing us to handle a wider class of bidirectional transformations that may contain duplications.

Research into ageing and cognition has demonstrated the close relationship of sensory functioning and social communication to maintaining cognitive performance and mood in the elderly, yet in modern societies elderly people are increasingly isolated and under-stimulated, both physically and psycho-socially. This situation results in accelerated cognitive decline and the suffering associated with loneliness and confusion. Health services cannot keep up with the demand for home visits and day care centres that can alleviate this problem. Incorporating new healthcare technologies for proactive health and elder care into everyday living environments can contribute significantly to support the elderly and their carers and is to become a major priority over the next decade. The approach followed in the AGNES project is to keep the elderly mentally and socially stimulated and in contact with others by combining state detection and social network technologies. This paper provides some scientific background for the chosen approach and describes the technological concept of the project. Copyright 2009 ACM.

In New Zealand and Australia, the BRACElet project has been investigating students' acquisition of programming skills in introductory programming courses. The project has explored students' skills in basic syntax, tracing code, understanding code, and writing code, seeking to establish the relationships between these skills. This ITiCSE working group report presents the most recent step in the BRACElet project, which includes replication of earlier analysis using a far broader pool of naturally occurring data, refinement of the SOLO taxonomy in code-explaining questions, extension of the taxonomy to code-writing questions, extension of some earlier studies on students' 'doodling' while answering exam questions, and exploration of a further theoretical basis for work that until now has been primarily empirical.

EDGeS is an European funded Framework Program 7 project that aims to connect desktop and service grids together. While in a desktop grid, personal computers pull jobs when they are idle, in service grids there is a scheduler that pushes jobs to available resources. The work in EDGeS goes well beyond conceptual solutions to bridge these grids together: it reaches as far as actual implementation, standardization, deployment, application porting and training. One of the work packages of this project concerns monitoring the overall EDGeS infrastructure. Currently, this infrastructure includes two types of desktop grids, BOINC and XtremWeb, the EGEE service grid, and a couple of bridges to connect them. In this paper, we describe the monitoring effort in EDGeS: our technical approaches, the goals we achieved, and the plans for future work.

In this paper, we propose enhanced approximation algorithms of combinatorial auction that are suitable for the purpose of periodical reallocation of items. Our algorithms are designed to effectively reuse the last solutions to speed up initial approximation performance. We present experimental results that show our proposed algorithms outperform existing algorithms in some aspects when the existing bids are not deleted. Also, we propose an enhanced algorithm that effectively avoids undesirable reuse of last solutions in the algorithm This is especially effective when some existing bids are deleted from the last cycle.

Multi-issue negotiation protocols represent a promising field since most negotiation problems in the real world involve interdependent multiple issues. Our work focuses on negotiation with interdependent issue and, therefore, nonlinear (multi-optimum) agent utility functions. In this paper, we propose a new threshold adjustment mechanism in which agent who open their local information more than the others. In addition preliminary experimental results demonstrate that the threshold adjusting mechanism can reduce the computational cost, and the amount of private information that is required for an agreement among agent keeping enough optimality.
