We present a research program for identifying, modeling, and making use of generic pragmatic patterns for clinical knowledge management that support evidence-based medicine (EBM). Part of this program is SOMWeb, a system based on Semantic Web technologies, which is used for knowledge sharing and dissemination within an oral medicine community. A study of the use of SOMWeb has been conducted as the first step in the elicitation of important contextual factors and communicative activities involved in knowledge sharing processes in oral medicine. One such activity, community discussion activation, is described using consultation patterns together with the collaboration patterns of [5]. The general need for context-aware health information systems and the prospective use of approaches within Pragmatic Web in the pursuit of EBM are also discussed. Copyright 2007 ACM.

With the emerging paradigm of grid computing and the development of grid infrastructures, grid-based applications are becoming a common approach for solving many complex, large-scale problems in science and engineering. In order to benefit from the large computing power of grid systems, efficient allocation of jobs to resources is necessary. In this work, we consider the allocation problem in immediate mode, in which jobs are allocated as soon as they arrive in the system. We implemented several methods and measured four parameters of the system: makespan, flow- time, resource utilization and matching proximity. The immediate methods are especially interesting when good quality allocations are necessary in very short time. The considered methods have been tested using the most difficult benchmark in the literature for the problem. The computational results allowed us to identify which of considered methods perform better for makespan, flowtime, resource utilization and matching proximity. Also, we were able to evaluate the usefulness of such methods if we knew in advance certain grid characteristics such as degree of consistency of computing, heterogeneity of jobs and resources.

In this paper, a novel method for Cued Speech language recognition is proposed. A multimodal processing framework is developed for the efficient fusion of the modalities under consideration. The robust feature extraction from the audio, lip shape and gesture modalities is also discussed. Moreover, the inherent correlation among the signals is modelled using a modified Coupled Hidden Markov Model. The contribution of each modality to the fused decision is modified by assessing its reliability and assigning a weighting factor to improve the accuracy of the recognized words. The method is experimentally evaluated and is shown to outperform methods that rely only on the perceivable information to infer the transmitted messages.

User modelling in on-line distance learning is an important research field focusing on two important aspects: describing and predicting students' actions and intentions as well as adapting the learning process to students' features, habits, preferences, and so on. The aim is to greatly stimulate and improve the learning experience. Indeed, on the one hand, students' intentions may change during the realization of learning activities and thus their actions evolve accordingly as the learning process moves forward. On the other hand, adaptive systems can effectively plan and design appropriate learning tasks according to students' features, habits and interests with the aim of facilitating the achievement of the learning goal. In this context, user modelling implies a continuous processing and analysis of user interaction data during long-term learning activities, which produces large and considerably complex information. As a consequence, processing this information is costly and could require computational capacity beyond that of a single computer. In this paper, we show how a grid approach can considerably decrease the processing time of log data of on-line distance educational Web-based systems. Our prototype is based on the master-worker paradigm and is implemented using a peer-to-peer platform running on the Planetlab nodes. The results of our study show the feasibility of using grid middleware to speed and scale up the processing of log data and thus achieve an efficient and dynamic user modeling in on-line distance learning

In this paper we present a system that is capable of estimating the position of a moving target on a grid plane covered by a pair of infrared transmitters. The area of this plane can be up to 15m2, further expandable if multiple transmitters are used. The position estimation method is based on comparing the number of infrared patterns received to the expected ones in a specific time interval (success rate). Using this method, no signal strength or time of flight has to be precisely measured, leading to an ultra low cost architecture. A proper topology of the infrared transmitters that optimally cover the desired area is discussed. The history of movements of the target is utilized in order to reject false estimations. The error achieved is below the half of the grid node distance.

This paper presents the design principles that cover the implementation of broadband infrastructure in the region of Western Greece, by examining all the necessary parameters that arise while implementing such a critical developmental project. Furthermore, we present as a case study, all issues of the designing of the Metropolitan Area Network of Patras, the third biggest city of Greece. The major target of the MAN of Patras is to interconnect the buildings of the public sector in the city and also deploy fibers that will create conditions of competition in providing both access and content services in advantage of the end consumer. The usage of the broadband infrastructure by service providers will be based on the open availability of the fiber optics infrastructure in a cost effective way. Finally, we present the main characteristics of a proposed business plan that ensures financial viability of the broadband infrastructure. Copyright 2006 ACM.
