We consider a priority cell scheduling in the following scenario. High-speed cell networks accommodate constant bit rate (CBR) streams from real-time sources and unspecified bit rate (UBR) streams from non real-time sources. The real-time traffic requires guarantees of its delay time. On the other hand, the non real-time traffic is relatively tolerable to its delay time. We obtain the queueing delay distribution of cells from CBR streams. Further the average queueing delay of cells from UBR streams is obtained in some special cases. We provide some numerical results and discuss the effectiveness of quality-of-service (QoS) guarantees based on the statistical bound and the influence of UBR streams on the system performance.

Proposes a powerful model, called MITOS (Model for Intelligent Three-dimensional Object Support) for the intelligent support of spatial data consisting of irregular 3D objects and their interrelations. The core novelty of the proposed data model lies in its delicate way of representing the (complicated) world of 3D objects in order to reduce its complexity. MITOS achieves this by discretizing the space, using mostly topological notions and finite sets, and by recalling geometry only when needed. On the other hand, MITOS's objects are effectively handled by the MITOS language, which is an integration of an object-oriented programming language and a logic-based one.

This paper presents a novel method for designing TSC m-out-of-n code checkers taking into account a realistic fault model including stuck-at, transistor stuck-on, transistor stuck-open, resistive bridging faults and breaks. The proposed design method is the first method in the open literature that takes into account a realistic fault model and can be applied for all practical values of m and n. Apart from the above the proposed checkers are very compact and very fast. Another benefit of the proposed TSC checkers is that all faults are tested by single pattern tests thus the probability of achieving the TSC goal is greater than in checkers requiring two-pattern tests.

A new initialization scheme for the Remez exchange algorithm is proposed. More specifically, the solution of the well known "don't care" filter design method is proposed as a new efficient initialization scheme for the Remez algorithm. Our proposal is motivated by the fact that the "don't care" least squares optimum solution satisfies one of the two basic conditions that are sufficient for obtaining the L/sub /spl infin// optimal solution according to the alternation theorem and at the same time it adequately approximates the second one. Because of these properties we have a significant speed up of the convergence of the Remez exchange algorithm to the L/sub /spl infin// optimum solution.

This research is motivated by the Circuit Value Problem;this problem is well known to be inherently sequential. We consider Boolean circuits with descriptions length d that consist of gates with a fixed fanin f and a constant number of inputs. Assuming uniform distribution of descriptions, we show that such a circuit has expected dept. O(log d). This improves on the best known result. More precisely, we prove for circuits of size n their dept. is asymptotically eflnn with extremely high probability. Our proof uses the coupling technique to bound circuit dept. from above and below by those of two alternative discrete time processes. We are able to establish the result by embedding the processes in suitable continuous time branching processes. As a simple consequence of our result we obtain that monotone CVP is in the class average NC. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1996.

The work concerning electronic health care record (EHCR) systems has brought forward different questions in the EU 3rd framework, in the 4th framework, in CEN TC-251 and at national levels. In some countries EHCRs are only generated by physicians. In some countries it is regarded relevant that the EHCR also contains electronic records generated by nurses and other medical and paramedical groups. The objective of the EHCR is sometimes not only to support the care, the care providers and to protect the legal rights of patients. It is also regarded a basic document storing data and information for statistical purposes, for R&D, for education, for epidemiological studies, Public health and outcome studies concerning, effectivity. efficiency, quality and costs. To support these goals of the EHCR, the existing classifications as ICD-9 (ICD-10), ICPM, Snomed are necessary, but are they sufficient? © The authors 1996.

In this paper, the solution used in the context of SEPDS (a Software Development Environment) to the problem of combining interactive behavior specification with functionality description of a distributed interactive application is presented. This solution consists of combining two specification models: IDFG to describe the interactive aspects of applications developed with the system and EDFG to describe their functionality. Both these models are data flow graph based and can be classified as process models. They use "actors" to represent performers of processes and "links" to represent data buffering and exchange, as well as roles and different perspectives. Although the two models have many semantical differences, they also have many common properties, that is why they can be straightforwardly combined in a process that enables designers think in users terms. To this end, action actors are used to represent the functions supported by the application, and context actors to represent the application user interface functions. In addition, links are used to represent the events that take place in the system (these may be user or system actions), the effects that these have on the screen, the context into which these take place and the goals that may be achieved using the application. Furthermore, the reusability and prototyping tools of SEPDS can be used to construct and test the application design. © 1993, Springer Verlag. All rights reserved.
