On FPGA, this paper presents the implementation of a simple processor architecture for accelerating data-parallel applications. Our proposed processor called SuperSMP, which can execute multi-scalar, vector, and matrix instructions on parallel execution datapaths. 4×32-bit instructions are fetched from instruction cache. The fetched instructions are decoded and their dependencies are checked. Up to four independent scalar instructions can be issued in-order to the parallel execution units. However, vector/matrix instructions iterate the issuing of four vector/matrix operations without checking. On four parallel execution units, SuperSMP can perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and shifting on scalar/vector/matrix data. 4×32-bit contiguous vector/matrix elements can be loaded/stored per clock cycle from/to L2 cache to/from matrix register file. Finally, up to 4×32-bit results or loaded data can be written into scalar/matrix register files. The FPGA implementation of our proposed SuperSMP requires 14,032 slices on Xilinx Virtex-5, XC5VLX110-3FF1153. The number of LUT flip-flop pairs is 49,398, where 17,166, 10,267, and 21,965, are the numbers of unused flip-flop, unused LUT, and fully used LUT flip-flop pairs, respectively. The complexity of SuperSMP is about 3.5 times of the baseline scalar processor. However, the performance of SuperSMP ranges from 4.3 to 18.2 times higher than the baseline scalar processor.

In this paper, we introduce a novel framework for lossless/near-lossless (LS/NLS) color image coding assisted by an inverse demosaicing. Conventional frameworks are typically based on prediction (and quantization for NLS coding) followed by entropy coding, such as the JPEG-LS for bit rate saving. The approach of this work is totally different from the conventional ones. Basically, color images are created by demosaicing Bayer-pattern color filter array (CFA) whose operator can be expressed as square matrices. By using the (pseudo) inverse matrix of a joint demosaicing and color-to-gray conversion, the proposed decoder can recover the color image from its corresponding gray image data which is losslessly transmitted by the proposed encoder. Thus, LS/NLS color image reconstruction can be achieved while saving a bit rate significantly. In addition, using the same framework of color image coding, LS/NLS CFA coding can be realized by a comparable bit rate with JPEG-LS.

Background subtraction is a crucial component in visual surveillance, which has been studied over years. However, an efficient algorithm that can tolerate the environment changes such as dynamic backgrounds and sudden changes of illumination is still demanding. In this paper, we design an innovative framework called the spatiotemporal background extractor (SBE) from a single-layer codebook model. Two main extractors, the background extractor (BE) and the background gradient extractor (BGE), are constructed to extract the foreground objects. The background extractor is built for each single frame with spatial information propagated from the neighbor locations, which is useful for handling dynamic background and sudden lighting changes. The background gradient extractor is also constructed and updated, and we design a propagation forbidden policy for background updating, so as to keep the completeness of foreground shape via the background gradient information. The proposed method can efficiently capture the foreground and eliminates the noise of background. The performance of the proposed method is compared with MoG [3], Codebook [4] and ViBe [8] on the Wallflower [1] and Perception [2] datasets.

Tensor contractions represent the most compute- intensive core kernels in ab initio computational quantum chemistry and nuclear physics. Symmetries in these tensor contractions make them difficult to load balance and scale to large distributed systems. In this paper, we develop an efficient and scalable algorithm to contract symmetric tensors. We introduce a novel approach that avoids data redistribution during contraction of symmetric tensors while also bypassing redundant storage and maintaining load balance. We present experimental results on two parallel supercomputers for several symmetric contractions that appear in the coupled cluster singles and doubles (CCSD) quantum chemistry method. We also present a novel approach to tensor redistribution that can take advantage of parallel hyperplanes when the initial distribution has replicated dimensions, and use collective broadcast when the final distribution has replicated dimensions, making the algorithm very efficient.

Many researchers analyzed and predicted hotspots social events by different methods based on contents from social media, such as Sina Weibo, a very hot Social Media in China, which got 5.03 billion users in 2012.

KM3NeT will be a network of deep-sea neutrino telescopes in the Mediterranean Sea. The KM3NeT/ARCA detector, to be installed at the Capo Passero site (Italy), is optimised for the detection of high-energy neutrinos of cosmic origin. Thanks to its geographical location on the Northern hemisphere, KM3NeT/ARCA can observe upgoing neutrinos from most of the Galactic Plane, including the Galactic Centre. Given its effective area and excellent pointing resolution, KM3NeT/ARCA will measure or significantly constrain the neutrino flux from potential astrophysical neutrino sources. At the same time, it will test flux predictions based on gamma-ray measurements and the assumption that the gamma-ray flux is of hadronic origin. Assuming this scenario, discovery potentials and sensitivities for a selected list of Galactic sources and to generic point sources with an E−2 spectrum are presented. These spectra are assumed to be time independent. The results indicate that an observation with 3σ significance is possible in about six years of operation for the most intense sources, such as Supernovae Remnants RXJ1713.7-3946 and Vela Jr. If no signal will be found during this time, the fraction of the gamma-ray flux coming from hadronic processes can be constrained to be below 50% for these two objects. Finding good keyphrases for a document is beneficial for many applications, such as text summarization, browsing, and indexing. In this paper, we propose a sequential pattern mining based document-specific keyphrase extraction method. Our key innovation is to use wildcards (or gap constraints) to help extract sequential patterns, where the flexible wildcard constraints within a pattern can capture semantic relationships between words. To achieve this goal, we regard each single document as a sequential dataset, and propose an efficient algorithm to mine sequential patterns with wildcard and one-off conditions that allows important keyphrases to be captured during the mining process. For each extracted keyphrase candidate, we use some statistical pattern features to characterize it. A supervised learning classifier is trained to identify keyphrases from a test document. Comparisons on keyphrase benchmark datasets confirm that our document-specific keyphrase extraction method is effective in improving the quality of extracted keyphrases.

In order to cultivate human resources with an advanced skill of software development, it is necessary to make the learner acquire the programming technology as the basis at an early point and with certainty. Programming education is conducted with a focus on exercise, and it is often the case that the result is made submitted as a report, in order to evaluate the degree of fixation for the knowledge by the exercise. By using the report, one can check the final result of the exercise, but it is difficult for the educator to know the process by the learner to complete making the software, or on its way, to face what kind of problems are faced and to cope with them. In this study, in conjunction with Eclipse, a learning environment to support software development exercise is constructed by collecting fine-grained record of learner's programming in real time and by storing it to the server connected to the network.
