Power system planning and operation offers multitudinous opportunities for optimization methods. In practice, these problems are generally large-scale, non-linear, subject to uncertainties, and combine both continuous and discrete variables. In the recent years, a number of complementary theoretical advances in addressing such problems have been obtained in the field of applied mathematics. The paper introduces a selection of these advances in the fields of non-convex optimization, in mixed-integer programming, and in optimization under uncertainty. The practical relevance of these developments for power systems planning and operation are discussed, and the opportunities for combining them, together with high-performance computing and big data infrastructures, as well as novel machine learning and randomized algorithms, are highlighted.

Currently, mobile communications are provided convenient methods to explore and communicate with each other people. A multitude of services have converged on the smartphone platform, and potentially the most notable is social networking. Thus, the electronic Mobile Chat (MC) plays a very important role in the social networking. With the increasingly growing reliance on Mobile Chat System (MCS) in one hand, and the growing number of vulnerabilities and attacks on the other hand, there is an increasingly demand for the security solutions. Despite of the critical role of MCS in the typical Internet mobile user's life, electronic MC services are not so secure. Therefore, the secure End-to-End Mobile Chat (SE2E-MC) scheme is proposed to be one of the suitable solutions. The basic framework for SE2E-MC scheme and its associated requirements are also designed in this paper. The proposal is implemented to provide mutual authentication and prevent the password guessing attack and the undetectable on-line password guessing attack. Finally, the scheme is a password-based authentication and key agreement (AKA) having easy remembered property.

People spend a significant amount of time in indoor spaces (e.g., office buildings, subway systems, etc.) in their daily lives. Therefore, it is important to develop efficient indoor spatial query algorithms for supporting various location-based applications. However, indoor spaces differ from outdoor spaces because users have to follow the indoor floor plan for their movements. In addition, positioning in indoor environments is mainly based on sensing devices (e.g., RFID readers) rather than GPS devices. Consequently, we cannot apply existing spatial query evaluation techniques devised for outdoor environments for this new challenge. Because particle filters can be employed to estimate the state of a system that changes over time using a sequence of noisy measurements made on the system, in this research, we propose the particle filter-based location inference method as the basis for evaluating indoor spatial queries with noisy RFID raw data. Furthermore, two novel models, indoor walking graph model and anchor point indexing model, are created for tracking object locations in indoor environments. Based on the inference method and tracking models, we develop innovative indoor range and k nearest neighbor (kNN) query algorithms. We validate our solution through extensive simulations with real-world parameters. Our experimental results show that the proposed algorithms can evaluate indoor spatial queries effectively and efficiently. © 2013 ACM.

Internet and mobile applications are becoming more and more helpful and widespread, while our daily lives are becoming increasingly busy and complicated. Preferences affect our actions, as well as those of intelligent agents. Answer Set Programming is a suitable framework for a decision making process which aims at supporting users by suitably planning their activities. Resourced Answer Set Programming (RASP) provides mechanisms for the optimization of answer sets according to preferences and resources. In this paper, an ASP-based system integrated with a mobile application able to plan the activities of a user is proposed, taking into account the context in which the user is located, the available resources, the geographical position and user's preferences.

Workflows provide an easy to use programming model for the construction of complex services that are (recursively) composed of simpler services. When it comes to high performance workflow execution, the distribution (outscaling) of the constituent services of the workflow across an environment of computational nodes is a key concept and also a very straightforward advantage of the workflow paradigm. However, scalable workflow execution cannot only be provided by the distribution of services but also necessitates novel architectures for the workflow engine in charge of service orchestration. Even though workflow orchestration is commonly provided by centralized solutions, these architectures imply performance bottlenecks and single points of failure. Hence, the workflow engine has to be distributed as well, by efficiently replicating workflow metadata across several nodes in a network. A particular challenge stems from the requirement of providing scalable workflow execution that is at the same time also reliable. In this paper, we present OSIRIS-SR, a decentralized middleware for the distributed execution of workflows. It has particularly been designed to jointly provide a high degree of scalability and reliability. OSIRIS-SR locally leverages the concurrent and redundant Actor model for workflow processing, whereas globally OSIRIS-SR runs a number of scalable system services for the management of workflow metadata, with the Safety Ring being the most prominent one. The Safety Ring service features a self-healing node overlay for the purpose of active workflow instance supervision that serves at the same time as a scalable and reliable metadata storage. We discuss in detail the Safety Ring architecture and the mechanics behind the scalable and reliable workflow management in OSIRIS-SR. The evaluation results of OSIRIS-SR show that support for reliable workflow execution does not significantly impact the system's scalability characteristics. © 2013 ACM.

Geospatial information is fast becoming a key data resource for a locality or country around the world. In recent years there have been major innovations in location based applications. Geographic information Systems (GIS) are helping all spheres of science. It is spawning new public services, helping developmental planning with unprecedented precision and playing vital role in national resource management. Unfortunately however, until now there is no good publicly available comprehensive Global Positioning System (GPS) data for Bangladesh. This is the case also for many under developed localities around the world. Obtaining comprehensive GPS data is expensive. One interesting phenomena in many of these localities is the proliferation of smart phone devices, many with GPS sensors due to 3G network expansion in recent years. In this paper, we present a pilot study where these low cost devices. It can be used to potentially build GIS databases at national scale. We have designed and developed a mobile application for GPS data collection with the help of crowd. Indeed if such data is publicly available many advanced and comprehensive application are possible. Therefore we have recorded the GPS data of Patuakhali municipality road as a test case. Then we have further demonstrated its application in analyzing the road structure of Patuakhali municipality using this comprehensive GPS data. The analysis will help to predict the difficulty and costing for similar type of area mapping.

Some conflicting results have been reported on the comparison between t-way combinatorial testing and random testing. In this paper, we report a new study that applies t-way and random testing to the Siemens suite. In particular, we investigate the stability of the two techniques. We measure both code coverage and fault detection effectiveness. Each program in the Siemens suite has a number of faulty versions. In addition, mutation faults are used to better evaluate fault detection effectiveness in terms of both number and diversity of faults. The experimental results show that in most cases, t-way testing performed as good as or better than random testing. There are few cases where random testing performed better, but with a very small margin. Overall, the differences between the two techniques are not as significant as one would have probably expected. We discuss the practical implications of the results. We believe that more studies are needed to better understand the comparison of the two techniques.

Active fault isolation of parametric faults in closed-loop MIMO systems are considered in this paper. The fault isolation consists of two steps. The first step is group-wise fault isolation. Here, a group of faults is isolated from other possible faults in the system. The group-wise fault isolation is based directly on the input/output signals applied for the fault detection. It is guaranteed that the fault group includes the fault that had occurred in the system. The second step is individual fault isolation in the fault group. Both types of isolation are obtained by applying dedicated auxiliary inputs and the associated residual outputs.

In this paper, we propose a new algorithm, called ClaSP for mining frequent closed sequential patterns in temporal transaction data. Our algorithm uses several efficient search space pruning methods together with a vertical database layout. Experiments on both synthetic and real datasets show that ClaSP outperforms currently well known state of the art methods, such as CloSpan. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2013.

This research discusses about recognizing direction by brainwave characteristic frequency band in the digital coding mode. The experiences proceeded by catching brainwave signals of human vision while sensing the test interfaces of graphics and words representing direction by brainwave sensor. To compile the related samples of energies from brainwave frequency band and times of appearances, then establish the directions which stand for left-turn, right-turn, forward and backward of brainwave characteristics frequency band and its digital coding modes. Studies are to derive and analyze brainwave signals from testing interfaces of different color combinations of patterns and words, and after that build the digital coding combinations of brainwave characteristics frequency band. This research is to analyze and discuss every kind of brainwave frequency band characteristics while subjects recognize the directions;moreover, to confer the topics such as analyzing the influences of different designs of pattern and word testing interfaces made in brainwave of recognizing directions in the view of Cognitive Neuroscience as well as defining if testing interfaces of color designs effect the brain wave signals while judging directions from human vision. © (2013) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.
