Precision medicine in cancer treatment increasingly relies on advanced radiotherapies, such as proton beam radiotherapy, to enhance efficacy of the treatment. When the proton beam in this treatment interacts with patient matter, the excited nuclei may emit prompt gamma ray interactions that can be captured by a Compton camera. The image reconstruction from this captured data faces the issue of mischaracterizing the sequences of incoming scattering events, leading to excessive background noise. To address this problem, several machine learning models such as Feedfoward Neural Networks (FNN) and Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN) were developed in PyTorch to properly characterize the scattering sequences on simulated datasets, including newly-created patient medium data, which were generated by using a pipeline comprised of the GEANT4 and Monte-Carlo Detector Effects (MCDE) softwares. These models were implemented using the novel ‘Big-data REU Integrated Development and Experimentation’ (BRIDE) platform, a modular pipeline that streamlines preprocessing, feature engineering, and model development and evaluation on parallelized GPU processors. Hyperparameter studies were done on the novel patient data as well as on water phantom datasets used during previous research. Patient data was more difficult than water phantom data to classify for both FNN and RNN models. FNN models had higher accuracy on patient medium data but lower accuracy on water phantom data when compared to RNN models. Previous results on several different datasets were reproduced on BRIDE and multiple new models achieved greater performance than in previous research.

Machine-generated hierarchical structure of human activities to reveal how machines think

Deep-learning based computer vision models have proved themselves to be ground-breaking approaches to human activity recognition (HAR). However, most existing works are dedicated to improve the prediction accuracy through either creating new model architectures, increasing model complexity, or refining model parameters by training on larger datasets. Here, we propose an alternative idea, differing from existing work, to increase model accuracy and also to shape model predictions to align with human understandings through automatically creating higher-level summarizing labels for similar groups of human activities. First, we argue the importance and feasibility of constructing a hierarchical labeling system for human activity recognition. Then, we utilize the predictions of a black box HAR model to identify similarities between different activities. Finally, we tailor hierarchical clustering methods to automatically generate hierarchical trees of activities and conduct experiments. In this system, the activity labels on the same level will have a designed magnitude of accuracy and reflect a specific amount of activity details. This strategy enables a trade-off between the extent of the details in the recognized activity and the user privacy by masking some sensitive predictions;and also provides possibilities for the use of formerly prohibited invasive models in privacy-concerned scenarios. Since the hierarchy is generated from the machine’s perspective, the predictions at the upper levels provide better accuracy, which is especially useful when there are too detailed labels in the training set that are rather trivial to the final prediction goal. Moreover, the analysis of the structure of these trees can reveal the biases in the prediction model and guide future data collection strategies. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Ion trap systems.built upon microfabricated chips have emerged as a promising platform for quantum computing to achieve reproducible and scalable structures. However, photo-induced charging of materials in such chips can generate undesired stray electric fields that disrupt the quantum state of the ion, limiting high-fidelity quantum control essential for practical quantum computing. While crude understanding of the phenomena has been gained heuristically over the past years, explanations for the microscopic mechanism of photo-generated charge carrier dynamics remains largely elusive. Here, we present a photo-induced charging model for semiconductors, whose verification is enabled by a systematic interaction between trapped ions and photo-induced stray fields from exposed silicon surfaces in our chip. We use motion-sensitive qubit transitions to directly characterize the stray field and analyze its effect on the quantum dynamics of the trapped ion. In contrast to incoherent errors arising from the thermal motion of the ion, coherent errors are induced by the stray field, whose effect is significantly imprinted during the quantum control of the ion. These errors are investigated in dept. and methods to mitigate them are discussed. Finally, we extend the implications of our study to other photo-induced charging mechanisms prevalent in ion traps. © 2023, CC BY.

The emergence of cloud computing technology has motivated a very high number of users in different organizations to access its services in running and delivering their various operations and services. However, this surge of cloud users has led to the problem of uneven load sharing among the cloud computing infrastructures. As a result, federated cloud infrastructure was initiated to provide more cloud computing resources to accommodate more cloud users’ requests and also to provide equal requests mapping with the available cloud resources. Nevertheless, the issue of unequal allocation of requests within the datacenter(s) that makes up the federated cloud environment still persists. This research work presents an intra-datacenter load balancing algorithm in a federated cloud environment named; the intra-balancer adapted throttled algorithm to evenly distribute requests in each datacenter that formulate the federated cloud infrastructures. The simulation of the intra-balancer was carried out in CloudAnalyst, the results of the implementation showed that the intra-balancer outperformed the Round-Robin and ESCE with 98.93ms and 2.26ms for the response and processing time respectively. The results assert that the intra-balancer algorithm provides a better load balancing solution in a federated cloud environment.

One major goal of digital twin technology applied in the Architecture, engineering, and Construction (AEC) Industry is the mapping of roads and road environments with their associated information. Such digital twins can support cost-effective testing, simulations, and the production of mapping backgrounds for automated vehicles and generally for Cooperative, Connected and Automated Mobility (CCAM) developments. The efficient workflow that leads from data acquisition to finished products depends on a number of requirements and knowledge sets. The main contribution of the paper is a general methodology of creating HD-map from point cloud and image data set. Accordingly, the most widely used survey techniques are presented and the requirements for the objects to be derived are summarized. The paper then outlines a general implementation procedure as an expert knowledge through a real-life example, where the results obtained for the ZalaZONE Automotive Proving Ground are demonstrated.

The paper is devoted to study of the influence of rolling modes on the performance of powerful interconnected electric drives of a hot rolling mill under the action of an electromagnetic coupling circuit between the electric drives of the roughing and finishing groups. The action of the electromagnetic coupling circuit manifests itself in the form of the influence of impact loads of synchronous electric drives on the angular velocity of direct current electric drives of the finishing group of the mill. The parameters of the electromagnetic coupling circuit are determined by the power supply scheme and equipment parameters. Values of impact loads applied to a synchronous motor depend on the rolling process parameters, in particular, the chemical composition of the rolled steel and the temperature of the ingot. The paper presents the results of calculating the rolling power for various rolling mode parameters. Using mathematical modeling in Simulink, numerical estimates of the influence of rolling modes on the magnitude of the voltage drop in the power supply unit and the drop in the angular velocity of the electric drive of the finishing group were obtained on the example of a wide-strip hot rolling mill 1700 of ArcelorMittal Temirtau JSC.

This paper introduces techniques to integrate WordNet into a Fuzzy Logic Programming system. Since WordNet relates words but does not give graded information on the relation between them, we have implemented standard similarity measures and new directives allowing the proximity equations linking two words to be generated with an approximation degree. Proximity equations are the key syntactic structures which, in addition to a weak unification algorithm, make a flexible query-answering process possible in this kind of programming language. This addition widens the scope of Fuzzy Logic Programming, allowing certain forms of lexical reasoning, and reinforcing Natural Language Processing applications. The outline and the status of the current development project towards the realization of the operational SSPS which is the final object of the development will be presented. The current project under development consists of three major tasks. First one is to develop so called power generation and transmission panel whose size is about 50 cm square and 10 cm thick, and the target weight should be less than 9 kg. The second is to improve the conversion efficiency from DC to microwave to exceed 60%. The third is to demonstrate power transmission from the ground to the target on unmanned vehicle high up about one kilo-meter in the air. All these three development activities are for the realization of the operational SSPS toward the final operational system on the Geostationary Orbit (GEO) Space Solar Power System (SSPS) after the one step of the power beaming experiment from the Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite to the ground as the next logical development step. © 2022 International Astronautical Federation, IAF. Automotive Simulation is a potentially cost-effective strategy to identify and test corner case scenarios in automotive perception. Recent work has shown a significant shift in creating realistic synthetic data for road traffic scenarios using a video graphics engine. However, a gap exists in modeling realistic optical aberrations associated with cameras in automotive simulation. This paper builds on the concept from existing literature to model optical degradations in simulated environments using the Python-based ray-tracing library KrakenOS. As a novel pipeline, we degrade automotive fisheye simulation using an optical doublet with +/-2◦ Field of View(FOV), introducing realistic optical artifacts into two simulation images from SynWoodscape and Parallel Domain Woodscape. We evaluate KrakenOS by calculating the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), which averaged around 0.023 across the RGB light spectrum compared to Ansys Zemax OpticStudio, an industrial benchmark for optical design and simulation. Lastly, we measure the image sharpness of the degraded simulation using the ISO12233:2023 Slanted Edge Method and show how both qualitative and measured results indicate the extent of the spatial variation in image sharpness from the periphery to the center of the degradations. © 2025, CC BY.

This paper describes the mathematical background, derivation, and application of homogeneous transformation matrices for robotics, as well as algorithms and simulations demonstrating their utility. It shows how to obtain any arbitrary rotation matrix by combining rotations around multiple axes. The resulting generalized rotation matrix is used to obtain a 3x3 rotation matrix that depends on the angles of rotation about the x, y, and z-axes. We also derived the generic homogeneous transformation matrix, which combines the rotation matrix with a translation vector to represent a transformation in 3D space. The resulting 4x4 transformation matrix is used to convert coordinates between different frame-of-reference in a simulated robotic workspace. The algorithm was used to simulate the trans-rotation of kinematic chains in robotics, based on the derived transformation matrix, thus demonstrating the correctness of the underlying models.
