We propose an approach to synthesize control protocols for autonomous systems.that account for uncertainties and imperfections in interactions with human operators. As an illustrative example, we consider a scenario involving road network surveillance by an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) that is controlled remotely by a human operator but also has a certain degree of autonomy. Depending on the type (i.e., probabilistic and/or nondeterministic) of knowledge about the uncertainties and imperfections in the operator- Autonomy interactions, we use abstractions based on Markov- decision processes and augment these models to stochastic two-player games. Our approach enables the synthesis of operator-dependent optimal mission plans for the UAV, highlighting the effects of operator characteristics (e.g., workload. proficiency, and fatigue) 011 UAV mission performance;it can also provide informative feedback (e.g., Pareto curves showing the trade-offs between multiple mission objectives), potentially assisting the operator in decision-making.

Meta-reasoning can improve numerous search algorithms, but necessitates collection of statistics to be used as probability distributions, and involves restrictive meta-reasoning assumptions. The recently suggested scheme of type systems.in search algorithms is used in this paper for collecting these statistics. The statistics are then used to better estimate the unknown quantity of expected regret of computing a heuristic in Rational Lazy IDA* (RLIDA*), and also facilitate a second improvement due to relaxing one of the unrealistic meta-reasoning assumptions in RLIDA*. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a complex, chronic disease that many patients live with for many years. In this work we propose a mHealth approach based on a set of unobtrusive, simple-in-use, off-the-self, co-operative, mobile devices that will be used for motor and non-motor symptoms monitoring and evaluation, as well as for the detection of fluctuations along with their duration through a waking day. Ideally, a multidisciplinary and integrated care approach involving several professionals working together (neurologists, physiotherapists, psychologists and nutritionists) could provide a holistic management of the disease increasing the patient's independence and Quality of Life (QoL). To address these needs we describe also an ecosystem for the management of both motor and non-motor symptoms on PD facilitating the collaboration of health professionals and empowering the patients to self-manage their condition. This would allow not only a better monitoring of PD patients but also a better understanding of the disease progression. © 2016 IEEE.

Symptoms of temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) are frequently associated with autonomic dysregulation, whose underlying biological processes are thought to strongly contribute to sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP). While abnormal cardiovascular patterns commonly occur during ictal events, putative patterns of autonomic cardiac effects during pre-ictal (PRE) periods (i.e. periods preceding seizures) are still unknown. In this study, we investigated TLE-related heart rate variability (HRV) through instantaneous, nonlinear estimates of cardiovascular oscillations during inter-ictal (INT) and PRE periods. ECG recordings from 12 patients with TLE were processed to extract standard HRV indices, as well as indices of instantaneous HRV complexity (dominant Lyapunov exponent and entropy) and higher-order statistics (bispectra) obtained through definition of inhomogeneous point-process nonlinear models, employing Volterra-Laguerre expansions of linear, quadratic, and cubic kernels. Experimental results demonstrate that the best INT vs. PRE classification performance (balanced accuracy: 73.91%) was achieved only when retaining the time-varying, nonlinear, and non-stationary structure of heartbeat dynamical features. The proposed approach opens novel important avenues in predicting ictal events using information gathered from cardiovascular signals exclusively.

Cooperative collision avoidance systems.rely on communication between vehicles to achieve the objective of automated or human-dependent crash avoidance. In this paper we investigate the mutual coupling of communication component and the safety application in cooperative collision warning systems. These systems.are warning based collision avoidance systems.that are currently under field test. We present a comprehensive co-simulation modeling framework which allows modeling and study of the entire system including vehicle dynamics, communication protocols, and collision detection/warning algorithms. Using this model, we show that in designs where the safety application and communication components are designed separately and agnostic to each other, system performance requires significantly higher network resources. Alternate content- And network-aware design strategies are shown to significantly reduce the required resources, resulting in significant reliability improvements. However, the cost of such strategies is mutual coupling of the performance of safety application and communication components. We show that such coupling can be effectively controlled in desired operation ranges for each component, leading to robust systems. The presented framework introduces a method for the study of a wide spectrum of communication dependent vehicular cyber-physical systems.

We revisit non-monotonic description logics based on circumscription (with preferences) and prove several decidability results for their satisfiability problem. In particular, we consider circumscribed description logics without the finite model property (DL-LiteF and ALCFI) and with fixed roles (DL-LiteF and a fragment of DL-LiteR), improving upon previous decidability results that are limited to logics which have the finite model property and do not allow to fix roles during minimization. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland.

In this paper we propose a novel optimization framework to obtain High Resolution (HR) Passive Millimeter Wave (P-MMW) images from multiple Low Resolution (LR) observations captured using a simulated Compressed Sensing (CS) imaging system. The proposed CS Super Resolution (CSS-R) approach combines existing CS reconstruction algorithms with the use of Super Gaussian (SG) regularization terms on the image to be reconstructed, smoothness constraints on the registration parameters to be estimated and the use of the Alternate Direction Methods of Multipliers (ADMM) to link the CS and SR problems. The image estimation subproblem is solved using Majorization-Minimization (MM), registration is tackled minimizing a quadratic function and CS reconstruction is approached as an l_1-minimization problem subject to a quadratic constraint. The performed experiments, on simulated and real PMMW observations, validate the used approach.

In this work we propose a novel framework to obtain High Resolution (HR) images from Compressed Sensing (CS) imaging systems.capturing multiple Low Resolution (LR) images of the same scene. The proposed CS Super Resolution (SR) approach combines existing CS reconstruction algorithms with an LR to HR approach based on the use of a Super Gaussian (SG) regularization term. The reconstruction is formulated as a constrained optimization problem which is solved using the Alternate Direction Methods of Multipliers (ADMM). The image estimation subproblem is solved using Majorization-Minimization (MM) while the CS reconstruction becomes an l_1-minimization subject to a quadratic constraint. The performed experiments show that the proposed method compares favorably to classical SR methods at compression ratio 1, obtaining excellent SR reconstructions at ratios below one.

Area exploration in WSN is used for a multitude of applications from data collection to network maintenance. In this paper, we propose a new approach - Max-Gain approach to explore an area with obstacles by modifying the utility function of frontier-based approach. The proposed approach moves the mobile nodes to a distant unexplored optimal position rather than directing it to a near frontier. The main focus of this paper is the fast area exploration using mobile nodes. We extend this approach to recover partitions in a disconnected network and hence restore connectivity. The results indicate that our approach guarantees fast area exploration with minimum communication overhead. Proposed area exploration approach is not limited to wireless sensor networks, but to any area exploration applications using mobile units.
