Infrastructure-as-a-service (laaS) clouds provide a new medium for deployment of environmental modeling applications. Harnessing advancements in virtualization, laaS clouds can provide dynamic scalable infrastructure to better support scientific modeling computational demands. Providing scientific modeling "as-a-service" requires dynamic scaling of server infrastructure to adapt to changing user workloads. This paper presents the Virtual Machine (VM) Scaler, an autonomic resource manager for laaS Clouds. We have developed VM-Scaler, a REST/JSON-based web services application which supports infrastructure provisioning and management to support scientific modeling for the Cloud Services Innovation Platform (CSIP) [Lloyd et al. 2012]. VM-Scaler harnesses the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) application programming interface to support model-service scalability, cloud management, and infrastructure configuration for supporting modeling workloads. VM-Scaler provides "cloud control" while abstracting the underlying laaS cloud from the end user. VM-Scaler is extensible to support any EC2 compatible cloud and currently supports the Amazon public cloud and Eucalyptus private clouds versions 3.1 and 3.3. VM-Scaler provides a platform to improve scientific model deployment by supporting experimentation with: hot spot detection schemes, VM management and placement approaches, and model job scheduling/proxy services.

In real world applications, most transaction databases are often large and constantly updated. Current data mining algorithms face the problem of processing a large number of transactions in dynamic environments. Since memory space is limited, it is critical to be able to use available storage efficiently and to process more transactions. In this paper, we propose an improved data structure of a compressed FP-tree to mine frequent itemsets with greater efficiency. Use of our method can minimize the I/O overhead, and, more importantly, it can also perform incremental mining without rescanning the original database. Our experimental results show that the method we propose not only requires less memory, but also performs incremental mining more efficiently. © 2013 ACADEMY PUBLISHER.

This paper presents a modular, extensible, framework for rendering images from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data on an array of heterogeneous processor architectures. Our design supports real-time reconstruction of a two-dimensional image from a matrix of echo pulses and their corresponding response values using Backprojection. Key to our design is the division of the Backprojection problem into atoms, which decomposes Backprojection along both it's input and output data dimensions, and allows scheduling algorithms to explicitly minimize communication overhead through the deliberate assignment of atoms to processors. Performance analysis on a cluster of 10 Tesla C2050 GPUs, and 5 Intel Xeon Processor X5650 CPUs has shown speedup that closely follows the number of processors in the cluster.

Matrix multiplication is one of the most important kernels used in the dense linear algebra codes. It is a computational intensive kernel that demands exploiting all available forms of parallelism to improve its performance. In this paper, ILP, DLP, TLP, and MPI are exploited to accelerate the execution of matrix multiplication on a cluster of computers with Intel Xeon processors. In addition, the Strassen's algorithm, which reduces the arithmetic operations of matrix multiplication from O(n 3 ) to O(n 2.807 ), is implemented using multi-threading, SIMD, blocking, and MPI techniques. Our results show that the average speedups of the traditional matrix multiplication algorithm on large matrices (from 6000×6000 to 9000×9000) are 14.9, 24.1, 24, 22.8 and 20.7 on 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 computers, respectively. However, on the Strassen's algorithm, the average speedups are 3.9, 6.8, 6.8, and 10.3 on 2, 4, 6, and 7 computers, respectively, by applying the same parallel processing techniques.

We introduce an improved intelligent water drops (IIWD) algorithm as a new swarm-based nature inspired algorithm to solve capacitated vehicle routing problem. IIWD algorithm introduces new adjustments and features that help to optimize the VRP problem with higher efficiency. We reinforce this algorithm to have satisfactory consequences in controlling the balance between diversification and intensification of the search process. We solve 14 well-known benchmark instances in the literature to compare the solutions with the best reported solutions in the literature. Experimental results demonstrate that the suggested technique can well and effectively cope with such problems.

The aim of this work is to present a modification of the Random Walker algorithm for the segmentation of occlusal caries from photographic color images. The modification improves the detection and time execution performance of the classical Random Walker algorithm and also deals with the limitations and difficulties that the specific type of images impose to the algorithm. The proposed modification consists of eight steps: 1) definition of the seed points, 2) conversion of the image to gray scale, 3) application of watershed transformation, 4) computation of the centroid of each region, 5) construction of the graph, 6) application of the Random Walker algorithm, 7) smoothing and extraction of the perimeter of the regions of interest and 8) overlay of the results. The algorithm was evaluated using a set of 96 images where 339 areas of interest were manually segmented by an expert. The obtained segmentation accuracy is 93%.

In this paper, we propose a resource allocation and Tx power control scheme, called resource allocation and power control (RAPC) in an LTE-Advanced device-to-device (D2D) network. In the proposed scheme, the macro base station (mBS) and D2D senders (D2DSs) service macro user equipment (mUEs) and D2D receivers (D2DRs) use the different frequency bands and Tx power chosen as D2D links' locations in inner and outer zones to reduce interference substantially. We analyze and compare the proposed scheme and random resource allocation (RRA) scheme with fractional frequency reuse (FFR) systems.in terms of the system throughput for DL and outage probability according to the number of D2D user's (D2DR) traffic density. Simulation results show that the RAPC scheme has better performance than the random resource allocation (RRA) scheme performance in terms of the system throughput and outage probability for mUEs and D2DRs.

Energy disaggregation is to discover the energy consumption of individual appliances from their aggregated energy values. To solve the problem, most existing approaches rely on either appliances' signatures or their state transition patterns, both hard to obtain in practice. Aiming at developing a simple, universal model that works without depending on sophisticated machine learning techniques or auxiliary equipments, we make use of easily accessible knowledge of appliances and the sparsity of the switching events to design a Sparse Switching Event Recovering (SSER) method. By minimizing the total variation (TV) of the (sparse) event matrix, SSER can effectively recover the individual energy consumption values from the aggregated ones. To speed up the process, a Parallel Local Optimization Algorithm (PLOA) is proposed to solve the problem in active epochs of appliance activities in parallel. Using real-world trace data, we compare the performance of our method with that of the state-of-the-art solutions, including the popular Least Square Estimation (LSE) methods and a recently-developed machine learning method using iterative Hidden Markov Model (HMM). The results show that our approach has an overall better performance in both detection accuracy and overhead.

This study is motivated by a plan to install a software-defined wireless local area network (SDWLAN) on campus, which possesses a desired property that both data flow and device behaviors can be software-definable. Because the installation involves hundreds of access points, we must conduct simulations beforehand to verify the design and scalability of the target system. However, existing SDN simulator like Mininet does not support modeling of wireless channel and mobility. On the other hand, common network simulator like ns-3 only has limited support for software-defined controllers and does not fully implement handover process. We thus develop OpenNet, which connects Mininet to ns3 to enjoy both Mininet's advantage of controller compatibility and ns-3's ability in the wireless/mobility modeling. OpenNet also complements ns-3 by adding probe mechanism, which is missing in the current ns-3 implementation. Our simulation result demonstrates the effectiveness of OpenNet.

Power system planning and operation offers multitudinous opportunities for optimization methods. In practice, these problems are generally large-scale, non-linear, subject to uncertainties, and combine both continuous and discrete variables. In the recent years, a number of complementary theoretical advances in addressing such problems have been obtained in the field of applied mathematics. The paper introduces a selection of these advances in the fields of non-convex optimization, in mixed-integer programming, and in optimization under uncertainty. The practical relevance of these developments for power systems.planning and operation are discussed, and the opportunities for combining them, together with high-performance computing and big data infrastructures, as well as novel machine learning and randomized algorithms, are highlighted.
