Leakage-resilient public key encryption (PKE) schemes are designed to resist "memory attacks", i.e., the adversary recovers the cryptographic key in the memory adaptively, but subject to constraint that the total amount of leaked information about the key is bounded by some parameter λ. Among all the IND-CCA2 leakage-resilient PKE proposals, the leakage-resilient version of the Cramer-Shoup cryptosystem (CS-PKE), referred to as the KL-CS-PKE scheme proposed by Naor and Segev in Crypto09, is the most practical one. But, the key leakage parameter λ and plaintext length m of KL-CS-PKE are subject to λ + m ≤ log q - ω(log κ), where κ is security parameter and q is the prime order of the group on which the scheme is based. Such a dependence between λ and m is undesirable. For example, when λ (resp., m) approaches to log q, m (resp., λ) approaches to 0. In this paper, we designed a new variant of CS-PKE that is resilient to key leakage chosen ciphertext attacks. Our proposal is λ ≤ log q - ω(log κ) leakage-resilient, and the leakage parameter λ is independent of the plaintext space that has the constant size q (exactly the same as that in CS-PKE). The performance of our proposal is almost as efficient as the original CS-PKE. As far as we know, this is the first leakage-resilient CS-type cryptosystem whose plaintext length is independent of the key leakage parameter, and is also the most efficient IND-CCA2 PKE scheme resilient to up to log q - ω(log κ) leakage. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Our research has been focused on developing human-robot interactions. We attempted to give a robotic arm has a consciousness resembling that of a human or an animal, so we have improved a hierarchical structure model, which defines the relationship between the consciousness field and the behavior module in the robotic arm. This model is called Consciousness-Based Architecture (CBA) and can be used to select the action of a robot. Indeed, the robot is programmed to select its own action by evaluating the changing situation based on its motivation value and image recognition. We have investigated the application of brain-inspired technology such as a Self Organizing Map (SOM) into the robotic arm. In this paper, we introduce a prototype function for autonomous action selection and show a classification of the robotic arm's behavior using SOM combined with a CBA module.

Recent results have shown that interference alignment (IA) achieves the optimal throughput scaling law w.r.t. SNR. However, except for a few special cases, finding transceivers to achieve IA in MIMO interference networks is still an open problem. This problem is challenging due to the non-convex nature of the interference optimization problem. Inspired by recent success in using tools from algebraic geometry to analyze the feasibility conditions of IA, in this work, we adopt algebraic geometry analysis to guide IA algorithm design. Specifically, we first explore the relation between algebraic independence and feasibility of polynomial equation sets, and transform the IA problem into an equivalent polynomial form, whose policy space is convex. Then we reformulate the transformed IA problem into an interference optimization problem. By exploiting the connection between algebraic independence and full rankness of Jacobian matrix, we prove that in the interference optimization problem, there is no performance gap between local and global optimums when IA is feasible. This property enables us to easily design IA algorithms by adopting existing local search algorithms. Combining the propositions obtained in this work and those obtained in the authors' prior work on IA feasibility, we have established a unified algebraic framework for both IA feasibility analysis and algorithm design.

The different implementations of cloud computing services developed by each cloud vendor have resulted in a heterogeneity of APIs and libraries which most developers of cloud-based applications must fight to understand. This so called vendor lock-in effect leads to a substantial increment on the development effort required to switch the initially selected cloud service used by an application to a different one. Different initiatives have emerged to solve this problem, such as standardization attempts, and intermediate systems.or middlewares. Instead, our approach makes use software adaptation techniques for tackling the vendor lock-in problem and facilitating the development of cloud applications that are not coupled to any specific platform. In this paper, a case study application is presented in order to illustrate how the vendor lock-in effect appears and to make an estimation of the effort required for its migration to a different platform. This way we show the benefits of our approach for reducing the cloud service migration efforts. Such solution is sketched briefly, and the main steps of the adaptation process are described.

It is often discussed that the fourth methodology for science research is "informatics". The first methodology is a theoretic approach, the second one is observation and/or experiment, and the third one is computer simulation. Informatics is a new methodology for data intensive science, which is a new concept based on the fact that most scientific data are digitalized and the amount of data is huge. The facilities to support informatics are cloud systems. Herein we propose a cloud system especially designed for science. The basic concepts, design, resources, implementation, and applications of the NICT science cloud are discussed.

Proline cis-trans isomerization plays a key role in the rate-determining steps of protein folding. Accurate prediction of proline cis-trans isomerization is of great importance for the understanding of protein folding, splicing, cell signaling, and transmembrane active transport in both the human body and animals. Our goal is to develop a state-of-the-art proline cis-trans isomerization predictor with a biophysically-motivated consensus model through the use of evolutionary information only. The current computational predictors of proline cis-trans isomerization achieve about 70-73% accuracies through the use of evolutionary information as well as predicted protein secondary structure information. However, our methods that utilize support vector machine (SVM) and tree-based consensus model have achieved 76.72% and 81.5% accuracies, respectively, on the same proline dataset.

The work presented in this paper has been carried out with the aim of interpreting the data of a GNSS Reflectometer (GNSS-R) over land. The problem involves the analysis of bistatic scattering of the incoming signal collected around the specular direction. This requires to model the coherent component associated to the mean surface and the diffuse incoherent component due to roughness at wavelength scale. In presence of vegetation, both components will be affected, the former mainly because of the canopy attenuation and the latter for the combined effect of attenuation and volume scattering. The paper reviews the problem and presents the approach followed to develop a simulator of GNSS-R data over land, aiming to support potential applications of GNSS-R for soil moisture and biomass retrieval.

Conducting a systematic literature review (SLR) is difficult and time-consuming for an experienced researcher, and even more so for a novice graduate student. With a better understanding of the most common difficulties in the SLR process, mentors will be better prepared to guide novices through the process. This understanding will help researchers have more realistic expectations of the SLR process and will help mentors guide novices through its planning, execution, and documentation phases. Consequently, the objectives of this work are to identify the most difficult and time-consuming phases of the SLR process. Using data from two sources - 52 responses to an online survey sent to all authors of SLRs published in software engineering venues and qualitative experience reports from 8 PhD students who conducted SLRs as part of a course - we identified specific difficulties related to each phase of the SLR process. Our findings highlight the importance of planning, teamwork, and mentoring by an experienced researcher throughout the process. The paper also identifies implications for the teaching of the SLR process.

We study the effect of radio signal shadowing dynamics, caused by vehicles and by buildings, on the performance of beaconing protocols in Inter-Vehicular Communication (IVC). Recent research indicates that beaconing, i.e., one hop message broadcast, shows excellent characteristics and can outperform other communication approaches for both safety and efficiency applications, which require low latency and wide area information dissemination, respectively. We show how shadowing dynamics of moving obstacles hurt IVC, reducing the performance of beaconing protocols. At the same time, shadowing also limits the risk of overloading the wireless channel. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study identifying the problems and resulting possibilities of such dynamic radio shadowing. We demonstrate how these challenges and opportunities can be taken into account and outline a novel approach to dynamic beaconing. It provides low-latency communication (i.e., very short beaconing intervals), while ensuring not to overload the wireless channel. The presented simulation results substantiate our theoretical considerations.
