Cooperative communication has been considered as a promising method for benefiting the advantages from MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) system for single antenna mobiles in the wireless network, and many important milestones in this area have been achieved, leading to a flurry of research activity. Especially, cooperative communication in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) has gained so much interest due to the limitations of WSNs. This paper proposes a new cooperative communication method for WSNs in port logistics according to the observation of real application in port. In our proposed method, we use some fixed agents to help the sensor nodes to gain more efficient communication in the network. The simulation results and analysis show that our method achieves a good performance in enhancing the transmission and energy efficiency, resulting in improvement of the communication performance of the whole network. ©2010 IEEE.

This paper presents a method of recovering digital ink for an intelligent camera pen, which is characterized by the functions that (1) it works on ordinary paper and (2) if an electronic document is printed on the paper the recovered digital ink is associated with the document. Two technologies called paper fingerprint and document image retrieval are integrated for realizing the above functions. The key of the integration is the introduction of image mosaicing and fast retrieval of previously seen fingerprints based on hashing of SURF local features. From the experimental results of 50 handwritings, we have confirmed that the proposed method is effective to recover and locate the digital ink from the handwriting on a physical paper. © 2010 IEEE.

This paper is to propose a method for dept. estimation in a 2D image using wavelet analysis. According to our observations, the high frequency components represent focused objects in images of limited dept. of field (DOF) and their high frequency wavelet subbands contain high energy. In our approach, each image is first transformed to YUV domain and the Y component is extracted for further analysis. Afterwards, the high frequency bands are derived with wavelet analysis. Through two stages of smoothing and scale manipulation, the dept. map data with less error can be used for some 3D display. The experimental result shows that the proposed approach is effective and efficient for dept. map estimation. ©2010 IEEE.

As a global interconnection, bus is critical for chip performance in deep submicron technology. Reducing bus routing vias will facilitate the lithography and give bus routing a higher yield and also a higher performance. In this paper, we present a floorplan revising method to minimize the number of reducible routing vias with a controllable loss on the chip area and wirelength. Therefore, it is easy to make a proper tradeoff between via reduction and revising loss. Experiments show that our method reaches a 96.2% and 93.5% reduction of routing vias, which is close to 100% and runs fast. Besides, our revising is friendly to all third-party floorplanners, which can be applied to any existing floorplans to reduce vias. It is also scalable to larger benchmarks. © 2010 ACM.

The Industrial Ethernet is promising for the implementation of a Cloud Computing based control system. However, numerous standard organizations and vendors have developed various Industrial Ethernets to satisfy the real-time requirements of field devices. This paper presents a real-time reconfigurable protocol stack to cope with this challenge, by introducing the architecture with a core of dynamic routing and autonomic local scheduling. It is based on the deterministic and stochastic Petri-Nets (DSPN) method to illustrate the performance of producer/consumer based application model, CSMA/CD based node accessing activities, and TDMA based resource allocation for real time and non-real time traffic. Furthermore, the predicted time distribution for evaluating the stability of a control system can be obtained from the proposed DSPN model. It is shown that the DSPN modeling yields good verification analysis and performance prediction results through a real experimentation. © 2010 IEEE.

We formalize paper fold (origami) by graph rewriting. Origami construction is abstractly described by a rewrite system (O,R), where O is the set of abstract origami's and is a binary relation on O, called fold. An abstract origami is a triplet (Π,∼), where Π is a set of faces constituting an origami, and ∼ and are binary relations on Π, each representing adjacency and superposition relations of the faces. Origami construction is modeled as a rewrite sequence of abstract origami's. We then address the problems of representation and transformation of abstract origami's and of reasoning about the construction for computational purposes. We present a hypergraph of origami and define origami fold as algebraic graph transformation. The algebraic graph theoretic formalism enables us to reason origami in two separate domains of discourse, i.e. pure combinatoric domain and geometric domain R × R, and thus helps us to further tackle challenging problems in origami research.

Within the scope of information retrieval, efficient similarity search in large document or multimedia collections is a critical task. In this paper, we present a rigorous comparison of three different approaches to the image retrieval problem, including cluster-based indexing, distance-based indexing, and multidimensional scaling methods. The time and accuracy tradeoffs for each of these methods are demonstrated on a large Corel image database. Similarity of images is obtained via a featurebased similarity measure using four MPEG-7 low-level descriptors. We show that an optimization of feature contributions to the distance measure can identify irrelevant features and is necessary to obtain the maximum accuracy. We further show that using multidimensional scaling can achieve comparable accuracy, while speeding-up the query times significantly by allowing the use of spatial access methods. © 2010 IEEE.

Requirements changes sometimes cause a project to fail. A lot of projects now follow incremental development processes so that new requirements and requirements changes can be incorporated as soon as possible. These processes are called integrated requirements processes, which function to integrate requirements processes with other developmental processes. We have quantitatively and qualitatively investigated the requirements processes of a specific project from beginning to end. Our focus is to clarify the types of necessary requirements based on the components contained within a certain portion of the software architecture. Further, each type reveals its typical requirements processes through its own rationale. This case study is a system to manage the orders and services of a restaurant. In this paper, we introduce the case and categorize its requirements processes based on the components of the system and the qualitative characteristics of ISO-9126. We could identify seven categories of the typical requirements process to be managed and/or controlled. Each category reveals its typical requirements processes and their characteristics. This paper presents a web-application supporting structured decision modelling and analysis. The application allows for decision modelling with respect to different preferences and views, allowing for numerically imprecise and vague background probabilities, values, and criteria weights, which further can be adjusted in an interactive fashion when considering calculated decision outcomes. The web-application is based on a decision tool that has been used in a large number of different domains over the last 15 years, ranging from investment decision analysis for companies to public decision support for local governments. © 2010 IEEE.

In this work a decision support tool for optimal administration of Levodopa (L-Dopa) in patients with Parkinson's Disease (PD) is presented. The so called Medication Change Proposer (MCP) is part of the PERFORM system, which monitors patient's motion status using a set of wearable sensors, assesses PD symptoms and their severity through dedicated symptoms detection modules (On-Off detection and LevodopaInduced Dyskinesia detection), and proposes treatment plans to alleviate the symptoms. The methodology is based on the analysis of the outputs of the symptoms detection modules, taking into account the uncertainty (confidence) propagated by their respective classification algorithms. The evaluation of our methodology is performed using artificial follow-up data produced by a specially built simulation environment. The obtained results demonstrate that the MCP outputs compare well with the experts' decisions, indicating high performance. © 2010 IEEE.
