This paper examines transformational learning experiences of computing students as a way to better understand threshold concepts in computing. From empirical evidence we found that students often describe transformative experiences as learning situations in which they were led to use various kinds of abstraction, for example modularity, data abstraction, inheritance, polymorphism, reuse, design patterns, and complexity. Some students describe an abstract concept as coming first, and then needing to be made concrete though application;others describe transformations in which they learn the advantages of these abstract concepts from their experience of not using them. Abstraction is certainly of central importance in computerscience. It appears, however, from our students' descriptions of transformative experiences, that abstraction per se is not a threshold, but that particular concepts in which abstraction is paramount exhibit the characteristics of threshold concepts. The objective of this paper is to present a graphical-user-interface (GUI) in support of a decision support system (KASER) for machine understanding. In order to provide information between the user and the KASER during the learning process, the approach is to combine informationscience and cognitive science in the form of several virtual and physical multimedia screens (e.g., a whiteboard running a pen-based OS ensemble, a menu-driven touch-screen, or a multimedia output screen). The touch-screen will also facilitate navigation between virtual screens. An application to homeland security is provided as an example;however the approach has vast applicability to many problems in which a graphical form of learning is required. The integration between human and machine is to be seamless which allows the user to pose questions and retrieve answers through the multimedia system, thus accelerating the learning process.

In this paper, we propose a novel architecture of photo core transform (PCT) which is used as transformation of image data into frequency domain in HD Photo, an emerging image coding system developed by Microsoft. In order to support various memory bus bandwidths used in system-on-a-chip (SoC) design, an implementation for each bandwidth can be derived based on our architecture. In addition, in order to reduce the local memory size and the traffic between the main and local memories, we propose a novel data transfer and storing scheme for PCT. The experimental results show that hardware modules corresponding to the given bus bandwidths can be reasonably derived from the proposed architecture.

It is shown from first principles and without relying on stochastic fading channel models that the number of spatial degrees of freedom of wireless networks can in principle grow linearly with the number of nodes, provided that the network is surrounded by a rich scattering environment. Hence, linear capacity scaling is physically possible in certain three dimensional geometries. In many industrial processes, the first order plus time delay (FOPDT) is still being widely used. FOPDT systems.are also called “KLT systems.(gain, delay, and time constant).” Considering uncertainties in the time delay, this paper attempts to answer this research question: “ Will a fractional order controller help and do better? “ In this paper, we first focus on fractional order proportional and integral controller (FOPI) for varying time-delay systems. Based on our previously proposed FOPI controller tuning rules using fractional M s constrained integral gain optimization (F-MIGO), we tried to simultaneously maximize the jitter margin and ITAE performance (minimize ITAE performance index) for a set of hundred KLT systems.having different time-constants and time-delay values. We observed that the optimization results in enlarged jitter margin of all systems.at expense of a slight decrease in ITAE performance of delay dominated systems. Further, the F-MIGO optimization based tuning rules were summarized by approximation of optimized gain parameters and fractional orders α of the FOPI controller. Simulation results are presented to verify the proposed new tuning rules for best jitter margin and ITAE performance.
