We present a novel approach for point-set implicit surface sampling that is able to rapidly distribute particles over the surface of 3D objects. Our methods benefit from the inner structure of a MPU implicit to obtain a near-optimal initial distribution, with higher densities in areas of higher complexity. The adequate number of particles to effectively sample the surface is determined almost automatically and in accordance to the surface characteristics. We also use the MPU information to obtain local surface complexity heuristics that are used in the simulation stage of the particle system. Shape modeling operations are directly supported and the redistribution of particles is very fast for local edits. We present performance results that show that our system is faster than other state-of-the art approaches for the same number of points. © The Eurographics Association 2007.

This paper presents a cross-modal approach of image retrieval from a medical image collection which integrates visual information based on purely low-level image contents and case related textual information from the annotated XML files. The advantages of both the modalities are exploited by involving the users in the retrieval loop. For content-based search, low-level visual features are extracted in vector form at different image representations. For text-based search, keywords from the annotated files are extracted and indexed by employing the vector space model of information retrieval. Based on the relevance feedback, textual and visual query refinements are performed and user's perceived semantics are propagated from one modality to another. Finally, the most similar images are obtained by a linear combination of similarity matching and re-ordering in a pre-filtered image set. The experiments are performed on a collection of diverse medical images with case-based annotation of each image by experts. It demonstrates the flexibility and the effectiveness of the proposed approach compared to using only a single modality or without any feedback information. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2007.

In this paper, a robust vibration suppression control method for a multi-inertia (a three-inertia and a four-inertia) system by a digital modified-IPD controller is proposed. The controller consists of integral, proportional, derivative and time lag of first order element. We apply the Taguchi Method for the determination of the controller gains for several noise factors (load side inertias and stiffness of the shafts). To confirm the effectiveness of the controller structure with several conditions and the tuning method, we use a real-time simulator based on a RTLinux.

The building identification (BID) problem is based on a process that uses publicly available information to automatically assign addresses to buildings in satellite imagery. In previous work, we have shown the advantages of casting the BID problem as a Constraint Satisfaction Problem (CSP) using the same generic constraint-model to represent all problem instances. However, a generic model is unable to represent with the necessary precision the addressing variations throughout the world, limiting the applicability of our previous approach. In this paper, we describe the end-to-end process used to solve the BID with a new model-generation technique that uses instance-specific information to automatically infer a representative constraint model of the BID. This inferred model is used by our custom constraint solver to identify buildings in satellite imagery more efficiently and with higher precision than using a single model. We evaluate our approach on El Segundo California, and empirically demonstrate its effectiveness for geographic areas larger than previously tested. We conclude with a discussion of the generality of our approach, and present directions for future work. © 2007 ACM.

Code inspection is considered an efficient method for detecting faults in software code documents. The number of faults not detected by inspection should be small. Several methods have been suggested for estimating the number of undetected faults. These methods include the fault injection method that is considered to be quite laborious, capture recapture methods that avoid the problems of code injection and the Detection Profile Method for cases where capture recapture methods do not provide sufficient accuracy. The Kantorowitz estimator is based on a probabilistic model of the inspection process and enables the estimating the number of inspectors required to detect a specified fraction of all the faults of a document as well as the number of undetected faults. This estimator has proven to be satisfactory in inspection of user requirements documents. The experiments reported in this study suggest that it is also useful for code inspection. © 2007 IEEE.

Pair programming, as part of the Agile Development process, has noted benefits in professional software development scenarios. These successes have led to a rise in use of pair programming in educational settings, particularly in CS1. Specifically [6] has shown that students using pair programming in CS1 do better in a CS2 class (with solo programming) than students who don't pair in CS1. This paper seeks to address a similar question, but from a qualitative, student-focused approach. How do students define, experience and value the pair programming experience? How do they experience and value it compared to solo programming? Does pairing in CS1 impact their confidence in their abilities? We report on semi-structured interviews with eleven subjects from two institutions where pair programming was used in CS1 and solo programming was used in the next course. Many of the responses met our expectations: students get stuck less and explore more ideas while pairing, and believe that pair programming helped them in CS1. Other responses were more surprising. Students reported that when solo programming that they were more confident and understood their programs better. Many students also said that they started work on their assignments earlier when soloing. Students also continue to use other students as resources even when working "solo". Copyright 2007 ACM.

Supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems.monitor, regulate, gather information from, and control the computer field units that control much of our industrial and utility infrastructure. Distributed Control systems.(DCS) is a broader term used in the chemical and process industries, and includes systems.implemented with SCADA networks as their backbone. Security was not a high priority in the design of much of this equipment because it used obscure protocols and relatively secure, dedicated, communications links. This has all changed in recent years as many SCADA and DCS systems.are now accessible, either deliberately or through system design flaws, through the public Internet. In this paper a new approach to the issue of intrusion detection and prevention in DCS and SCADA has been developed. Here, the cyber vulnerabilities specifically applicable to the control of chemical plants are directly addressed, rather than adopting in this environment generic solutions. Abnormal behavior signatures are directly associated with adaptive traffic matrix deviations. Spatial and temporal correlation techniques are then applied to enhance intrusion detection. This paper also discusses an experimental test-bed for generating attack data for a wide variety of SCADA and DCS configurations. K-means clustering is a powerful and frequently used technique in data mining. However, privacy breaching is a serious problem if the k-means clustering is used without any security treatment, while privacy is a real concern in many practical applications. Recently, four privacypreserving solutions based on cryptography have been proposed by different researchers. Unfortunately none of these four schemes can achieve both security and completeness with good efficiency. In this paper, we present a new scheme to overcome the problems occurred previously. Our scheme deals with data standardization in order to make the result more reasonable. We show that our scheme is secure and complete with good efficiency. © 2007 IEEE.

This paper presents a novel framework for predicting stock trends and making financial trading decisions based on a combination of Data and Text Mining techniques. The prediction models of the proposed system are based on the textual content of time-stamped web documents in addition to traditional numerical time series data, which is also available from the Web. The financial trading system based on the model predictions (ADMIRAL) is using three different trading strategies. In this paper, the ADMIRAL system is simulated and evaluated on real-world series of news stories and stocks data using the C4.5 Decision Tree Induction Algorithm. The main performance measures are the predictive accuracy of the induced models and, more importantly, the profitability of each trading strategy using these predictions. © 2007 IEEE.
