A three-stage methodology for the extraction of maternal and fetal heart rate using abdominal ECG leads, is presented. In the first stage, the maternal R-peaks and fiducial points (maternal QRS onset and offset) are detected, using multiscale principal components analysis (MSPCA) and the Smoothed Nonlinear Energy Operator (SNEO). Maternal fiducial points are used to eliminate the maternal QRS complexes from the abdominal ECG recordings. In the second stage, again MSPCA and SNEO are employed in order to detect the fetal heart beats that do not overlap with the maternal QRSs (eliminated from the first stage). The extraction of the fetal heart rate is accomplished in the last stage, using a histogram based technique in order to identify the positions of the fetal heart beats that overlap with the maternal QRSs. Real signals, recorded from different pregnant women and different weeks of gestation, are used for the evaluation of the proposed methodology and the obtained results indicate high performance (accuracy 95%). © 2007 IEEE.

The small screens on increasingly used mobile devices challenge the traditional visualization methods designed for desktops. This paper presents a method called "Radial Edgeless Tree" (RELT) for visualizing trees in a 2-dimensional space. It combines the existing connection tree drawing with the space-filling approach to achieve the efficient display of trees in a small geometrical area, such as the screen that are commonly used in mobile devices. We recursively calculate a set of non-overlapped polygonal nodes that are adjacent in the hierarchical manner. Thus, the display space is fully used for displaying nodes, while the hierarchical relationships among the nodes are presented by the adjacency (or boundary-sharing) of the nodes. It is different from the other traditional connection approaches that use a node-link diagram to present the parent-child relationships which waste the display space. The hierarchy spreads from north-west to south-east in a top-down manner which naturally follows the traditional way of human perception of hierarchies. We discuss the characteristics, advantages and limitations of this new technique and suggestions for future research. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2007.

The wider use of healthcare information systems.and the easier integration and sharing of patient clinical information can facilitate a wider access to medical records. The main goal of this paper is to perform a systematic review to analyze published work that studied the impact of facilitating patients' access to their medical record. Moreover, this review includes the analysis of the potential benefits and drawbacks on patient attitudes, doctor-patient relationship and on medical practice. In order to fill a gap in terms of the electronic medical record (EMR) impact within this issue, this review will focus on the use of EMR for patients to access their medical records as well as the advantages and disadvantages that this can bring. The articles included in the study were identified using MEDLINE and Scopus databases and revised according to their title and abstract and, afterwards, their full text was read considering inclusion and exclusion criteria. From the 165 articles obtained in MEDLINE a total of 12 articles were selected. From Scopus, 2 articles were obtained, so a total of 14 articles were included in the review. The studies revealed that patients' access to medical records can be beneficial for both patients and doctors, since it enhances communication between them whilst helping patients to better understand their health condition. The drawbacks (for instance causing confusion and anxiety to patients) seem to be minimal. However, patients continue to show concerns about confidentiality and understanding what is written in their records. The studies showed that the use of EMR can bring several advantages in terms of security solutions as well as improving the correctness and completeness of the patient records. © 2007 The authors and IOS Press. The Electronic Medical Record (EMR) is a very important support tool for patients and healthcare professionals but it has some barriers that prevent its successful integration within the healthcare practice. These barriers comprise not only security concerns but also costs, in terms of time and effort, as well as relational and educational issues that can hinder its proper use. Access control is an essential part of the EMR and provides for its confidentiality by checking if a user has the necessary rights to access the resources he/she requested. This paper comprehensively reviews the published material about access control in healthcare. The review reveals that most of the access control systems.that are published in the literature are just studies or prototypes in which healthcare professionals and patients did not participate in the definition of the access control policies, models or mechanisms. Healthcare professionals usually needed to change their workflow patterns and adapt their tasks and processes in order to use the systems. If access control could be improved according to the users' needs and be properly adapted to their workflow patterns we hypothesise that some of the barriers to the effective use of EMR could be reduced. Then EMR could be more successfully integrated into the healthcare practice and provide for better patient treatment. © 2007 The authors and IOS Press. All rights reserved.

Grid Computing is now in the state of development that can offer dynamic management of various parameters that affect the applications' properties such as performance and reliability capabilities. The importance of that achievement is great, given the trend of migrating traditional service markets to inter-enterprise infrastructures and the resulting demand in more or different guarantees on the level of the Quality of Service. In that frame, we present a design pattern for monitoring and evaluating SLA terms on service-oriented architectures. This mechanism takes into account the actual capabilities of the service provider infrastructure and maps them to customer-centric Quality of Service terms, thus ensuring that agreements will not be validated. In this way it enables the estimation of the actual capability of the service to provide Quality of Service at a certain degree. © 2007 Springer science+Business Media, LLC.

Although modern day people gather many data from the network, the users want only the information needed. Using this technology, the users can extract on the data that satisfy the query. As the previous studies use the single data in the document, frequency of the data for example, it cannot be considered as the effective data clustering method. What is needed is the effective clustering technology that can process the electronic network documents such as the e-mail or XML that contain the tags of various formats. This paper describes the study of extracting the information from the user query based on the multi-attributes. It proposes a method of extracting the data such as the sender, text type, time limit syntax in the text, and title from the e-mail and using such data for filtering. It also describes the experiment to verify that the multi-attribute based clustering method is more accurate than the existing clustering methods using only the word frequency.

Multimedia information services in mobile environments are becoming more and more important with the proliferation of 3G technologies. Media streaming, in particular, is a promising technology for providing services such as news clips, live sports, and hot movies on the fly. To avoid service interruption when the users keep moving, proper data management strategies must be employed. We propose a new headlight prefetching technique for the streaming access points to deal with the uncertainty of client movement and the requirement of seamless service hand-off. For each mobile client, we maintain a virtual fan-shaped prefetching zone along the direction of movement similar to the headlight of a moving vehicle. The overlapping area and the accumulated virtual illuminance of the headlight zone on a particular cell determines the degree and volume of prefetching to be made by the streaming access point of that cell. Headlight prefetching solves the issues of identifying the streaming access points responsible for prefetching, the timing and the amount of data to prefetch in a single mechanism which is simple and effective. Simulation results demonstrate that our techniques can significantly decrease streaming disruptions, reduce bandwidth consumption, increase cache utilization and improve service response time. The alignment of multiple protein sequences is a problem of fundamental importance in bioinformatics. In general, the optimal alignment can be obtained through the optimization of an objective function. However, such an optimization task is often computationally intractible, most of the existing alignment tools thus use statistical or machine learning based methods to avoid direct optimizations. In this paper, we develop a new method that can progressively construct and update a set of alignments by adding sequences in certain order to each of the existing alignments. In particular, each of the existing alignments is modeled with a profile hidden markov model (HMM) and an added sequence is aligned to each of these profile HMMs. The profile HMMs in the set are then updated based on the alignments with leading alignment scores. We performed experiments on BaliBASE benchmarks to compare the performance of this new approach with that of other alignment tools. Our experiments showed that, by introducing an integer parameter that controls the number of profile HMMs in the set, we are able to efficiently explore the alignment space and significantly improve the alignment accuracy on sequences with low similarity. © 2007 IEEE.
