The FLuorescence EXplorer (FLEX) mission proposes to launch a satellite for the global monitoring of steady-state chlorophyll fluorescence in terrestrial vegetation. Fluorescence is a sensitive probe of photosynthetic function in both healthy and physiologically perturbed vegetation, and a powerful non-invasive tool to track the status, resilience, and recovery of photochemical processes and moreover provides important information on overall photosynthetic performance with implications for related carbon sequestration. The early responsiveness of fluorescence to atmospheric, soil and plant water balance, as well as to atmospheric chemistry and human intervention in land usage makes it an obvious biological indicator in improving our understanding of Earth system dynamics. The amenability of fluorescence to remote, even space-basedobservation qualifies it to join the emerging suite of space-based technologies for Earth observation. FLEX would encompass a three-instrument array for measurement of the interrelated features of fluorescence, hyperspectral reflectance, and canopy temperature. FLEX would involve a space and ground-truthing program of 3-years duration and would provide data formats for research and applied science.

Due to the Internet's complexity, analysis or simulation is restricted to assessing the parameters of the Internet. Instead, actual measurements provide the means for a reality check. Many statistics measurement of the Internet are related to estimating the rare event probabilities. This renders sampling methods as a primary substitute to collecting such statistics. We presented the conventional Monte Carlo approach to estimate the Internet event probability. As a variance reduction technique, importance sampling is introduced, which is a modified Monte Carlo approach resulting in a significant reduction of the effort required to obtain an accurate estimate. Particularly, it works best when estimating the probability of rare events. It is, therefore, extremely appealing to be able to resort to efficient importance sampling schemes for estimating the information server density on the Internet In this paper, a thorough analysis of the presented sampling approaches has been performed. We proposed an importance sampling approach to track the prevalence and growth of the web service. A periodic measurements of the number of active web servers was conducted over the past year. An increasing security concerns on the web servers have been detected and discussed.

Incremental clustering algorithm via crossentropy

A new incremental clustering method is presented, which partitions dynamic data sets by mapping data points in high dimension space into low dimension space based on （fuzzy） cross-entropy（CE）. This algorithm is divided into two parts： initial clustering process and incremental clustering process. The former calculates fuzzy cross-entropy or cross-entropy of one point relafive to others and a hierachical method based on cross-entropy is used for clustering static data sets. Moreover, it has the lower time complexity. The latter assigns new points to the suitable cluster by calculating membership of data point to existed centers based on the cross-entropy measure. Experimental compafisons show the proposed methood has lower time complexity than common methods in the large-scale data situations cr dynamic work environments.

This paper considers the decentralized dynamic programming path planning decision processes of multiple cooperating autonomous aerial vehicles (UAVs) engaged in a search of an uncertain environment. However, what sets this paper apart from previous work is that a functional approximation is used for the dynamic programming (DP) cost-to-go function, resulting in improved quality of the decisions made while retaining computationally feasibility. Some of the effects of the changes are measured by simulation analysis, and the results are presented.

Continuous audio-visual surveillance is utilized to ensure the physical safety of critical infrastructures such as airports, nuclear power plants and national laboratories. In order to do so, traditional surveillance systems.place cameras, microphones and other sensory input devices in appropriate locations [Sch99]. These facilities are arranged in a hierarchy of physical zones reflecting the secrecy of the guarded information. Guards in these facilities carry clearances that permit them only in appropriate zones of the hierarchy, and monitor the facilities by using devices such as hand-held displays that send streaming media of the guarded zones possibly with some instructions. The main security constraint applicable to this model is that any guard can see streams emanating from locations with secrecy levels equal to or lower than theirs, but not higher. We show how to model these surveillance requirements using the synchronized multimedia integration language (SMIL) [Aya01] with appropriate security enhancements. Our solution consists of imposing a multi-level security model on SMIL documents to specify surveillance requirements. Our access control model ensures that a multimedia stream can only be displayed on a device if the security clearance of the display device dominates the security clearance of the monitored zone. Additionally, we pre-process a set of cover stories that can be released during emergency situations that allow using the services of guards with lower clearances without disclosing data with higher sensitive levels. For this, we create a view for each level, and show that these views are semantically coherent and comply with specified security polices. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

This work is in the area of parallel discrete event simulation. We consider a conservatively synchronized parallel simulation where submodels consist of multiple entities, each with some amount of lookahead. We explore the issue of improving the lookahead of a submodel by combining the lookahead abilities of individual entities. We review the concepts and conditions for cumulative lookahead. We provide an experimental evaluation of the effect of cumulative lookahead on simulation performance.

This paper proposes a new Heterogeneous Multi-hop Cellular IP (MCIP) network that integrates multi-hop communication with Cellular IP. MCIP increases the coverage of the wireless network and improves the network robustness against adverse propagation phenomena by supporting communication in dead zones and areas with poor radio coverage. MCIP includes three components: location management, connection management and route reconfiguration. Location management is responsible for maintaining the location information for Mobile Stations (MSs) in a local domain. Connection management establishes an initial path for data transmission and a route reconfiguration mechanism is proposed to take advantage of various multi-hop connection alternatives available based on terminal interfaces, network accessibility and topology. Our simulation results show that MCIP performs well in networks of various sizes. © 2005 IEEE.

The notion of linear fpt-reductions has been recently used to derive strong computational lower bounds for well-known NP-hard problems. In this paper, we formally investigate the notions of W[t]-hardness and W[t]-completeness under the linear fpt-reduction, and study structural properties of the corresponding complexity classes. Faculty from Oakland University's engineering, business and education schools are working together with Oakland's Pawley Institute to teach students about lean manufacturing using an interdisciplinary approach. The goal is to educate future employees about lean from a diverse perspective before they enter the workforce. By providing students with the knowledge and skills to use lean principles and tools to solve real world problems, these future employees will add immediate value to the companies that hire them. These Oakland University faculty members have developed an interdisciplinary course entitled "Lean Principles and Application". This elective course is taken by students enrolled in engineering, business, and human resource development degree programs. A key component of the course is a semester long project that involves analyzing the performance of a local manufacturing company and developing a plan for implementing a lean program.
