We present the design and modeling of an intelligent modular switching architecture, designated MSA, for packet transport over next-generation ultra-dense wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) networks. The proposed architecture reduces the electronic processing overhead in sending the packets from source to destination. This is achieved by sending routing/forwarding information on a dedicated control channel. The control packets are processed electronically by a control processor at each intermediate node. The processing of control packets ensures that the data packets propagate from source to destination in photonic form (that is, without any processing by intermediate nodes). Due to the flexible nature of the proposed architecture it can be applied to support opaque optical networks to all-optical networks and can be used to transport IP/MPLS and ATM traffic. The performance evaluation of the proposed switching architecture shows that it drastically reduces the electronic processing overhead. Saving in the processing overhead can leverage bandwidth utilization without increasing the hardware gear cost. Furthermore, a large saving in terms of electrical-to-optical (E/O) and optical-to-electrical (O/E) converters cost per node can also be achieved.

Integrating main memory (DRAM) and processors into a single chip, or merged DRAM/logic LSI, makes it possible to exploit high on-chip memory bandwidth by widening on-chip bus and on-chip DRAM array. In addition, from energy point of view, the integration brings a significant improvement by decreasing the number of off-chip accesses. For merged DRAM/logic LSIs with on-chip cache memory, we can exploit the high bandwidth by means of replacing a whole cache line at a time. This approach tends to increase the cache-line size if we attempt to exploit the attainable high bandwidth. A large cache-line size gives a benefit of prefetching effect if programs have rich spatial locality. Otherwise, however, it will bring the following disadvantages due to poor spatial locality: 1. A number of conflict misses will take place due to frequent evictions. 2. As a result, a lot of energy will be wasted for on-chip DRAM (main memory) due to a number of main memory accesses. 3. Activating the wide on-chip bus and the DRAM array will also dissipate a lot of energy.

The problem of networking supervision and traffic rate control in multi-service network systems.is studied by using concepts of Nash equilibrium and Stackelberg strategy under assumption of two-level system architecture. Models of users, network provider and overall system in game-theoretic setting are presented. Linear Stackelberg incentive strategies are derived for both elastic and non-elastic traffic, and verified using Kelly's example. Outlines of the two-level integrated control and supervision architecture, and of the proposed fuzzy-Perti-net supervisor are given.
