We explore the possibility to use Linear Camera Space manipulation (LCSM) algorithm [1] to map a large workspace using cameras equipped with fisheye lenses. We tested how the distortion of the image caused by the lens influences the precision of the LCSM algorithm when used to estimate the positions of visual cues in 3-D space. We used two Hero3 GoPro® (H3GP) cameras as a good compromise between acquisition rate and number of pixel in the image. We used a previously published correction algorithm to eliminate the fisheye distortion [2] and compare it with standard calibration. The model estimate the radial distortion with a bi-quadratic equation which coefficients K and K 2 To estimate such coefficients a non-linear calibration called Stereo Calibration Method was also used [2]. Stereo calibration uses a pair of images, also known as a stereo pair, to estimate the relative dept. of points in the scene. These estimates are represented in a stereo disparity map, which is constructed by matching corresponding points within the stereo pair. These coordinates are used to calculate the distortion factors of each camera lens.

An extensive library of symptom inventories has been developed over time to measure clinical symptoms, but this variety has led to several long standing issues. Most notably, results drawn from different settings and studies are not comparable, which limits reproducibility. Here, we present an artificial intelligence (AI) approach using semantic textual similarity (STS) to link symptoms and scores across previously incongruous symptom inventories. We tested the ability of four pre-trained STS models to screen thousands of symptom description pairs for related content - a challenging task typically requiring expert panels. Models were tasked to predict symptom severity across four different inventories for 6,607 participants drawn from 16 international data sources. The STS approach achieved 74.8% accuracy across five tasks, outperforming other models tested. This work suggests that incorporating contextual, semantic information can assist expert decision-making processes, yielding gains for both general and disease-specific clinical assessment. © 2023, CC BY-NC-SA.

Cord blood (CB) transplants are hampered by low cell dose and high transplant related mortality (TRM). UM171, a novel and potent agonist of hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) self-renewal could solve this major limitation, allowing for CB's important qualities as lower risk of chronic GVHD and relapse to prevail. Hence, we initiated a clinical trial to test the safety and efficacy of UM171 expanded CB (eCB). The procedure was designed to be non-labor intensive and of short duration for it to be clinically viable. Patients (pts) received a myeloablative conditioning regimen. On day(D)-7 of transplant, CB was thawed and CD34+ selected. The CD34- lymphocyte containing fraction was cryopreserved and infused on day of transplant. The CD34+ component was placed in a closed culture system with UM171 and media was injected once a day until D0, when cells were washed and infused. The first 3 pts also received a 2nd nonmanipulated CB (neCB) to permit documentation of eCB engraftment. This fed-batch culture system allowed for small culture volumes, saving cost and labor. Between 6/16-7/17, 16 adults with a median weight and age of 77 kg and 44 years, respectively, were transplanted with a single eCB (13 pts) or with an eCB and a neCB (3 pts). Median final culture volume was 609 mL. The median net viable (v)CD34 fold expansion was 36. Median 1st day of 100 and 500 neutrophils were D+10 and D+19, respectively. Achieving 100 neutrophils was faster than expected and cell dose independent, suggesting that clinically meaningful expansion of an early repopulating myeloid progenitor is at saturation even with smaller CBs. In contrast, attaining 500 neutrophils was accelerated but dependent on infused vCD34+ cell dose. More importantly, patients appeared to derive clinical benefit beyond neutrophil engraftment defined as the 1st of 3 consecutive days of 500 neutrophils. There is a clinical need to improve the sensitivity and objectivity of assessment during clinical evaluation of upper extremity function in pediatric patients with orthopaedic disabilities. To address this need, consumer technology and custom software are combined to develop a portable, cost-effective markerless motion analysis system, which is shown to be accurate in kinematic joint angle detection when evaluated against goniometric methods. A functional assessment activity protocol is described and normal pediatric population studied to allow statistical determination of key indicators of activity performance, which are used to develop automated scoring algorithms. Computed scores can detect statistically significant individual differences even in the normal population. Markerless motion capture introduces quantitative data to standardized functional assessments without increasing the burden on patients and caregivers. Copyright 2016, ISA All Rights Reserved.

Ischemic Heart Disease (IHD) and stroke are statistically the leading causes of death world-wide. Both diseases deal with various types of cardiac arrhythmias, e.g. premature ventricular contractions (PVCs), ventricular and supra-ventricular tachycardia, atrial fibrillation. For monitoring and detecting such an irregular heart rhythm accurately, we are now developing a very cost-effective ECG monitor, which is implemented in 8-bit MCU with an efficient QRS detector using steep-slope algorithm and arrhythmia detection algorithm using a simple heart rate variability (HRV) parameter. This work shows the results of evaluating the real-time steep-slope algorithm using MIT-BIH Arrhythmia Database. The performance of this algorithm has 99.72% of sensitivity and 99.19% of positive predictivity. We then show the preliminary results of arrhythmia detection using various types of normal and abnormal ECGs from an ECG simulator. The result is, 18 of 20 ECG test signals were correctly detected.

Space biology research aims to understand fundamental effects of spaceflight on organisms, develop foundational knowledge to support deep space exploration, and ultimately bioengineer spacecraft and habitats to stabilize the ecosystem of plants, crops, microbes, animals, and humans for sustained multi-planetary life. To advance these aims, the field leverages experiments, platforms, data, and model organisms from both spaceborne and ground-analog studies. As research is extended beyond low Earth orbit, experiments and platforms must be maximally autonomous, light, agile, and intelligent to expedite knowledge discovery. Here we present a summary of recommendations from a workshop organized by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration on artificial intelligence, machine learning, and modeling applications which offer key solutions toward these space biology challenges. In the next decade, the synthesis of artificial intelligence into the field of space biology will deepen the biological understanding of spaceflight effects, facilitate predictive modeling and analytics, support maximally autonomous and reproducible experiments, and efficiently manage spaceborne data and metadata, all with the goal to enable life to thrive in deep space. © 2021, CC BY.

The effect of local stresses on memory retention characteristics has been characterized in detail. A retention time of memory cells in a DRAM chip with 200-μm thick was largely changed after under-fill shrinkage with Cu/Sn bumps. Meanwhile, after thinned down to 40-μm thick, the retention time of memory cell was not significantly changed in the whole area even with Cu/Sn bumps due to decreased stress. We showed that the local stress generated by under-fill shrinkage with the dummy Cu/Sn bumps gave larger effects on the memory retention characteristics than the stress generated by the Si thinning until 40-μm thick.
