Purpose: Implant-supported dentures seem particularly appropriate for the predicament of becoming edentulous and cancer patients are no exceptions. As the number of people having dental implants increased in different ages, critical dosimetric verification of metal artifact effects are required for the more accurate head and neck radiation therapy. The purpose of this study is to verify the theoretical analysis of the metal(streak and dark) artifact, and to evaluate dosimetric effect which cause by dental implants in CT images of patients with the patient teeth and implants inserted humanoid phantom. Methods: The phantom comprises cylinder which is shaped to simulate the anatomical structures of a human head and neck. Through applying various clinical cases, made phantom which is closely allied to human. Developed phantom can verify two classes: (i)closed mouth (ii)opened mouth. RapidArc plans of 4 cases were created in the Eclipse planning system. Total dose of 2000 cGy in 10 fractions is prescribed to the whole planning target volume (PTV) using 6MV photon beams. Acuros XB (AXB) advanced dose calculation algorithm, Analytical Anisotropic Algorithm (AAA) and progressive resolution optimizer were used in dose optimization and calculation. Results: In closed and opened mouth phantom, because dark artifacts formed extensively around the metal implants, dose variation was relatively higher than that of streak artifacts. As the PTV was delineated on the dark regions or large streak artifact regions, maximum 7.8% dose error and average 3.2% difference was observed. The averaged minimum dose to the PTV predicted by AAA was about 5.6% higher and OARs doses are also 5.2% higher compared to AXB. Conclusion: The results of this study showed that AXB dose calculation involving high-density materials is more accurate than AAA calculation, and AXB was superior to AAA in dose predictions beyond dark artifact/air cavity portion when compared against the measurements.

Degeneration of the intervertebral disk is the main cause of chronic back pain. Disk degeneration often leads to tearing of the annulus fibrosus (AF) and extrusion of the nucleus pulposus. As the current surgical strategies are suboptimal, reconstruction of the AF tissue by a tissue engineering strategy has emerged as an alternative. However, regeneration of the AF is challenging due to its complex and non-homogeneous structure. Since there is a lack of knowledge regarding the effects of scaffold pore sizes on the behavior of human AF cells (hAFCs), scaffolds with a well-defined and controlled pore architecture with pore sizes ranging from 230–420 µm were prepared by stereolithography. The scaffolds were prepared from the crosslinked biodegradable elastomer poly(trimethylene carbonate) (PTMC). The compression modulus of the scaffolds was inversely related to the pore size and ranged from 0.31–0.21 MPa. These values are similar to those reported for native AF tissue. Seeded hAFCs adhered to the PTMC network and proliferated well in all scaffolds during a culture period of 14 days. However, cell distribution was less homogeneous in the scaffold with 230 µm pore size. In view of its relatively high stifness, the latter scaffold is most suitable for AF tissue engineering, provided that the cell seeding procedure in this scaffold is optimized.

Generally, stray capacitance is unnecessary element of designing circuit, because it can not be predicted by a designer. But we propose LC Resonant Circuit using stray capacitance of transformer. This method proposes miniaturization of circuit, because LC Resonant Circuit can be make simply to using stray capacitance instead of capacitor and size of transformer is reduced. Finally, we research aspect of dielectric heating by change of frequency and output voltage using developed converter.

Flow quantification with high-frequency power Doppler ultrasound can be performed using the wall-filter selection curve (WFSC) method [Elfarnawany et al., Ultrasound Med. Biol. 38, 1429–1439 (2012)]. The WFSC method plots color pixel density (CPD) as a function of wall filter cut-off velocity as a means of objectively selecting an operating point cut-off velocity. In this study, an in vivo video microscopy (IVVM) system was used to measure the size of small (140–400 μm diameter) mouse testicular vessels immediately after the vessels were imaged with 30 MHz power Doppler. The mouse remained on the same platform throughout ultrasound and IVVM imaging. Measurements in four image planes from three mice demonstrated that, similar to previously reported flow-phantom data, in vivo WFSCs exhibit distinct, sloped “characteristic intervals” at cut-off velocities where the CPD approaches the gold-standard IVVM estimate of vascular volume fraction. A wide range of operating point cut-off velocities (4.5 to 12 mm/s) was obtained, which indicates that use of a predetermined cut-off can produce substantial errors in cross-sectional studies that employ power Doppler to quantify vascularity. The WFSC method is a promising strategy for adapting the cut-off velocity to intersubject and longitudinal variations in blood flow during microvascular imaging experiments.

Textiles are mainly used for decoration and protection. In both cases, their original appearance and its retention are important factors for customers. Therefore, evaluation of appearance parameters are critical for quality assurance purposes, during and after manufacturing, to determine the lifetime and/or beauty of textile products. In particular, appearance retention of textile products is commonly certified with grades, which are currently assigned by human experts. However, manufacturers would prefer a more objective system. We present an objective system for grading appearance retention, particularly, for textile floor coverings. Changes in appearance are quantified by using linear regression models on texture features extracted from intensity and range images. Range images are obtained by our own laser scanner, reconstructing the carpet surface using two methods that have been previously presented. We extract texture features using a variant of the local binary pattern technique based on detecting those patterns whose frequencies are related to the appearance retention grades. We test models for eight types of carpets. Results show that the proposed approach describes the degree of wear with a precision within the range allowed to human inspectors by international standards. The methodology followed in this experiment has been designed to be general for evaluating global deviation of texture in other types of textiles, as well as other surface materials. © 2012 SPIE and IS&T.
