We aim to bring computer science (CS) to rural and American Indian students by blending American Indian storytelling practices with the educational computer programming environment called Alice. The lessons we develop cover CS concepts within the framework of the Content Standards of our state, and the Essential Understandings of American Indians. In this paper, we describe the Plateau Indian Beaded Bags lesson plan, its implementation, and the results of a lesson pilot. In the Plateau Indian Beaded Bags lesson, students learn about the beadwork of Columbia River Plateau-centered tribes. After viewing a picture of a beaded bag with a scene depicting a man on a horse in front of a woman with a tipi in the background, students are asked to construct a story based on this image. They then translate their story into code to create an animation of the story in Alice. Through this hands-on experience, students engage in algorithmic problem solving while using their imagination and creativity, increasing their exposure to, and interest in, CS. © 2023 ACM.

Traditional solutions for tramway interlocking systems are based on physical sensors (balizes) distributed along the infrastructure which detect passing of the trams and trigger different actions, like the communications with the ground infrastructure and the interlocking system. This approach is not easily scalable and maintainable, and it is costly. The SISTER project designed new architectural solutions for addressing the previous problems based on the virtualization of the sensors and on the local positioning of each tram. The key idea is to trigger actions when the computed local position corresponds to a virtual tag. However, the computed position can be affected by errors, compared to the real one. Therefore, it is important to understand the impact of these new solutions on the traffic that can be supported by the tramway network. This paper presents a stochastic modeling approach for analysing the performability of a tramway system based on the SISTER architectural solutions, aiming to identify the parts of the tramway network that are more critical and sensible to the variation of the traffic conditions and to the setting of the key architectural parameters. We build a model using Stochastic Activity Networks and run sensitivity analyses on (i) the accuracy of the positioning, (ii) the different SISTER parameters, and (iii) considering possible outages temporarily blocking the journey of a tram. This analysis allows to properly set and fine-tune the key architectural parameters, to understand the impact of the accuracy on the positioning, to understand the impact of the outages. © 2021, The Author(s).

We provide a new model for texture synthesis based on a multiscale, multilayer feature extractor. Within the model, textures are represented by a set of statistics computed from ReLU wavelet coefficients at different layers, scales and orientations. A new image is synthesized by matching the target statistics via an iterative projection algorithm. We explain the necessity of the different types of pre-defined wavelet filters used in our model and the advantages of multilayer structures for image synthesis. We demonstrate the power of our model by generating samples of high quality textures and providing insights into deep representations for texture images. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. The millimeter-wave(mm-Wave) radar based on frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) owns the advantages of non-contact, privacy protection, high resolution, and anti-interference, and it became the hot point that applying the radar in monitoring vital signs for smart home. However, most of current studies focus on how to improve the detection performance under the steady scenarios and give little consideration on the unsteady scenarios with physical interference. In this paper, we propose a method to detect vital signs under unsteady scenarios by a best-effort way. This method automatically differentiates between the steady state and motion state (unsteady) by identifying the motion type, and extracts the vital sign under steady state without physical motion interference. For this end, we first figure out feature spectrograms with range-main velocity information from motion features. And then, employ a sliding windows sampling method to construct data set, and apply ResNet-18 network model in the motion type identification (including steady state). Based on the motion type, the phase signal during steady state and leverage the variational mode decomposition (VMD) algorithm to analyze respiration/heart rate. Experiment results show that using ResNet-18, the recognition accuracy of the motion state and motion type is close to 97%, and the recognition delay is less than 1.1s. Meanwhile, the mean absolute errors of the respiration rate and heart rate drop to 1.7bpm and 3.4bpm respectively.

Generally, the criteria involved in a decision making problem are interactive or interdependent, and therefore aggregating them by the use of traditional operators which are based on additive measures is not logical. This verifies that we have to implement fuzzy measures for modelling the interaction phenomena among the criteria. On the other hand, based on the recent extension of hesitant fuzzy set, called higher order hesitant fuzzy set (HOHFS) which allows the membership of a given element to be defined in forms of several possible generalized types of fuzzy set, we encourage to propose the higher order hesitant fuzzy (HOHF) Choquet integral operator. This concept not only considers the importance of the higher order hesitant fuzzy arguments, but also it can reflect the correlations among those arguments. Then, a detailed discussion on the aggregation properties of the HOHF Choquet integral operator will be presented. To enhance the application of HOHF Choquet integral operator in decision making, we first assess the appropriate energy policy for the socio-economic development. Then, the efficiency of the proposed HOHF Choquet integral operator-based technique over a number of exiting techniques is further verified by employing another decision making problem associated with the technique of TODIM (an acronym in Portuguese of Interactive and Multicriteria Decision Making). © 2020, CC-BY.

This contribution reviews critically the existing entropy measures for probabilistic hesitant fuzzy sets (PHFSs), and demonstrates that these entropy measures fail to effectively distinguish a variety of different PHFSs in some cases. In the sequel, we develop a new axiomatic framework of entropy measures for probabilistic hesitant fuzzy elements (PHFEs) by considering two facets of uncertainty associated with PHFEs which are known as fuzziness and non-specificity. Respect to each kind of uncertainty, a number of formulae are derived to permit flexible selection of PHFE entropy measures. Moreover, based on the proposed PHFE entropy measures, we introduce some entropy-based distance measures which are used in the portion of comparative analysis. Eventually, the proposed PHFE entropy measures and PHFE entropy-based distance measures are applied to decision making in the strategy initiatives where their reliability and effectiveness are verified. © 2020, CC-BY.

We show under what conditions an accelerated detector (e.g., an atom/ion/molecule) thermalizes while interacting with the vacuum state of a quantum field in a setup where the detector’s acceleration alternates sign across multiple optical cavities. We show (non-perturbatively) in what regimes the probe ‘forgets’ that it is traversing cavities and thermalizes to a temperature proportional to its acceleration. Then we analyze in detail how this thermalization relates to the renowned Unruh effect. Finally, we use these results to propose an experimental testbed for the direct detection of the Unruh effect at relatively low probe speeds and accelerations, potentially orders of magnitude below previous proposals.
