The study of materials that have evolved through millions of years of evolution and natural selection can provide insights into heretofore-unexploited mechanisms of toughening. Structural biological materials such as mollusk shells, bones and teeth have hierarchical assembly from the nanoscale to the macroscale. Other defining features are multifunctionality, self-assembly under ambient conditions and adaptability. Most biological systems are grown through a bottom-up strategy, in contrast with conventional synthesis methods, which have been mainly top-down manufacturing methods. These materials are lightweight with densities<3gm/cm3 and are composed of a limited number of elements, yielding specific strengths, elastic modulus and toughness values that are extraordinarily high. These provide a new paradigm as the basis for bioinspired materials design.

In this work, an array-type micro cell chip with micro temperature sensors (iMTS) and a thermoelectric device was fabricated to investigate temperature effect on fluid-phase endocytosis (FPED) of HeLa cells at the single-cell level. Using two different molecular probes, large-scale single-cell FPED data (more than 500 cells) demonstrated the existence of a critical endocytosis temperature of 16-17°C for HeLa cells. Activation energy at higher temperature range (18 kcal/mol). This energy difference suggests that en-docytosis can occur through different mechanisms at different temperatures.

For the reduction of the manufacturing cost, a high deposition rate of amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) thin film in fabrication is very important. Thus high plasma density and low process temperature deposition technique is keen to develop. Another issue of a-Si:H thin film uses plasma enhanced CVD which causes plasma damage to the film. We use electron cyclotron resonance chemical vapor deposition (ECRCVD) to deposit a-Si:H layers with varying microwave power, magnetic field, and hydrogen dilution. The major advantages of ECRCVD are high deposition rate and remote plasma zone that can avoid surface damage. A high deposition rate more than 2 nm/sec was developed by ECRCVD. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) is used for measuring the microstructure factor (R*) to interpret the effects of microwave power, magnetic field, and hydrogen dilution.
Fracture resistance of AISI 304LN stainless steel has been examined by monotonic and cyclic J-integral tests, the latter being carried out using periodic unloading as per pre-determined Rratio. The cyclic fracture res...

In this paper, novel polymer electrolyte membranes (PEMs) based on new sulfonated polyimides have been prepared. These polymers have structure of rigid aromatic polymer backbone and flexible aliphatic side chain terminated with sulfonic acid group. Membrane properties such as proton conductivity and single fuel cell performance are evaluated. Most of the polymeric ionomers showed high potential for application to PEM fuel cells.
A theoretical and experimental study of electroporation (EP) of red blood cells (RBCs) was presented in this paper. With additional strain energy, an energy-based model of an electropore induced on a RBC's membran...
