A series of replicas taken periodically throughout the fatigue lifetime has been used to determine the fraction of lifetime in the high cycle range at which a fatigue crack can be first identified. For the alloys investigated this fraction is less than 10% of the fatigue lifetime. The replicas also provide a record of crack length as a function of the number loading cycles, and this information has been used to compare the crack length with predictions based upon a basic constituitive relationship. Good agreement between the experimental results and the predictions was obtained.

Ferromagnetic nanowire arrays were fabricated into the nanoscale pores of anodic aluminum oxide template using an alternate current electrodeposition method. The nanowires grew from the bottom to top of the pore by chemical reduction deposition. The microstructures of the nanowires were observed as complete single crystalline structure and the subsequent nanowires for different materials grew with special oriented directions. For body-centered cubic Fe nanowires the growth direction is along , and for face-centered cubic Ni nanowres the growth direction is along respectively. The growth of nanowires was considered as a restricted growth model because of the narrow holes environment. The magnetic hysteresis loops were measured by vibration sample magnetometer system from 0 to 10000 Oe. The magnetic reversal mechanism and the maximum coercivity for nanowires arrays were discussed and calculated respectively according to a chain-of-spheres model. The magnetic nanowire arrays are considered have the applications prospects in high density magnetic recording media and high sensitive magnetic sensors.

Reduction of part build time in the Rapid Freeze Prototyping (RFP) process, which fabricates a 3D ice part layer-by-layer by depositing and freezing water droplets, has been achieved by increase of heat transfer. Three mechanisms have been experimentally investigated: 1) cooling the substrate, 2) use of forced convection, and 3) use of a chilling plate. Cooling the substrate is effective for parts of small heights but becomes ineffective with increase in part height. Forced convection produced desirable reduction in part build time but with the undesirable formation of frost on the built ice part. The use of chilling plate to increase heat conduction proved to be most effective. To ensure that the frozen ice from the deposited water can be easily removed from the chilling plate, various surface coats were investigated and the most effective surface coat was found to be a thin Teflon film. After incorporating the chilling plate we have successfully achieved 75% reduction in part build time.

Aluminum alloys containing 2 and 4 wt.% copper reinforced with aluminum borides were successfully fabricated by squeeze casting employing squeezing pressures up to 62 MPa. The distribution of reinforcements in the composites was measured and the effect of pressure on density and hardness of the composites was determined. The pressure effect on the squeezed composites was investigated by optical microscopy, Vickers microhardness testing and superficial Rockwell hardness testing. Higher applied pressures increased the squeezed castings density and the shrinkage porosity was practically eliminated. The composite superficial hardness was improved by increasing the applied pressure upon squeeze casting. Finally, the indirect squeeze cast technique caused Al 2Cu phase segregation to upper regions of the specimens;on the other hand, the AlB12 reinforcement segregated preferentially at lower regions of the specimen.

In this study, the decreasing rate of fatigue strength by the directionality of a notch and the betterment effect of the fatigue strength by a shot-peening were examined. The straight notch with a notch angle of 30 -90 ° was given to the specimen, and the rotating bending fatigue test was carried out. As a result, in the case of 90° , it fractured at the notch, and the fatigue limit was reduced 14%. In the case of 60 ° or less, it fractured from the outside of notch with stress of near the fatigue limit, and the fatigue limit was equivalent to the plain wire. However, in the case of the oil tempered wire without remarkable drawn structure, the fatigue limit became decreased as the notch angle became large. This fact shows that the high Si hard drawn-wire with a notch angle of 60 ° or less did not fractured at a notch by the effect of drawn structure. When shot peening process was performed after giving the notch, the fatigue limit was higher than the untreated wire. This showed that a shot peening process was effective in the improvement of the decrease of the fatigue strength by a small defect.
