The oxidation resistance of intermetallic compound TiAl was greatly improved in cyclic heating at 900°C by means of a new type of surface treatment, which is the heat treatment under a low partial pressure oxygen atmosphere. The treatment becomes more effective with increasing aluminum content in the specimen. It was presumed that the excellent oxidation resistance resulting from this method is due to preferential formation of a thin and tighit Al2 O3 surface layer, which is formed during the surface treatment at a temperature vicinity of 1000°C and air pressure of about 10-3 Pa. The oxidation resistance of Al2O3 film formed, however, was found to be insufficient at 950°C. A combined treatment consisting of the heat treatment under a low partial pressure oxygen atmosphere followed by a diffusion coating with aluminum showed an excellent resistance to cyclic oxidation even at 950°C.
A prototype chromel-alumel overlapping thin-film thermocouple (TFTC) has been developed for transient heat transfer measurements in ceramic-coated combustion chambers. The TFTC has been evaluated using various metallu...

An experimental investigation was made of a two dimensional flow formed by the interaction of two asymmetric turbulent curved wall jets past a circular cylinder. Measurements were made of velocity and turbulence intensity profiles of the two curved wall jets before the interaction, and those of the merged jet after the interaction. The location of the interaction region of the two opposing curved wall jets and the flow direction of the merged jet were found to depend primarily on the ratio of initial momentum fluxes. The velocity and turbulence intensity profiles of the merged jet were similar to those of the plane turbulent jet. However, the growth rate of the merged jet was approximately 1.5 times larger than that of the plane jet. The influence of the momentum flux ratio on the growth rate appeared to be insignificant.

The as-quenched structures consist mainly of dislocated martensite. In the boron-free steel, there are more lath boundary retained austenite films. The boron-treated steel shows higher strengths at all tempering temperatures but with lower Charpy V-notch impact energies. Both steels show tempered martensite embrittlement when tempered at 350 degree C for 1 h. While the boron-free steel shows a continuous increase in toughness when temperature above 500 degree C, the boron-treated steel suffers a second drop in toughness at 600 degree C tempering. Nonconventional heat treatments have been designed to improve the mechanical properties.
Microstructure is among the most important factors known to affect the stress corrosion cracking (SCC) susceptibility of medium and high strength steels. Multipass welding can produce various microstructures in the we...
