Real-time mirror reflection is employed in many virtual reality applications to achieve visuo-haptic collocation. Its use, however, necessitates adjustments to the original model as well any used input devices to compensate for changes due to image reversion. This paper introduces a design and implementation of a generic configuration component for virtual environments that adjusts image characteristics and haptic interfaces to accommodate such setups while preserving the properties and features of the original model. Furthermore, this work executes running multiple display viewports for the same virtual environment synchronously. This work accomplishes a significant step in the development of a surgical simulator for the Nuss Procedure surgery performed to correct Pectus Excavatum, a congenital deformity of the anterior chest wall.

This paper presents an initial baseline model of factors that give rise to an attacker. It explores the impact of successful rate of attack and social learning on the decision to become an attacker. The model utilizes rational choice theory, routine activity theory, social learning theory, and perceived behavioral control from the theory of planned behavior to examine factors that moves an individual from user to attacker. An agent-based model is used to depict the effect of interactions of users and attacks of all users., successful and unsuccessful, have on an individual's decision to become an attacker. Preliminary results suggest that opportunity has a stronger influence than the rate of successful attacks or the size of the associated group. © 2016 Society for modeling & simulation International (SCS).

The rate and sophistication of cyber-attacks are ever increasing forcing organizations to test their systems and assess their risks for specific situations (e.g., data breach). simulation is an emerging field in testing and assessing cybersecurity risk as it allows modeling cyber systems, their interdependencies, and interactions between cyber systems and people who are using, policing, and even attacking these systems. With cybersecurity scenarios, we help describe and formulate these complex interdependencies and relationships. In this paper, we first characterize cybersecurity scenarios along (1) the nature of cyber systems with considerations for design and (2) the type of actor with considerations of abilities. This characterization provides a more clear distinction compared to military oriented LVC (Live-Virtual-Constructive) simulation characterization. We then review examples from the literature based on our characterization. According to our review, we note that cyber system representation has been widely explored while actor representation is often realized at the technical-level dismissing social and cognitive aspects. Thus, we believe that paying more attention to social and cognitive aspects of actor representation, especially as developing general-purpose tools, will benefit the modeling and simulation community. © 2016 Society for modeling & simulation International (SCS).

Surgical simulation is embraced by many for training and skill transfer purposes of non-trivial minimally invasive procedures. Some systems utilize haptic feedback within an anatomically-correct virtual environment whereas others use manikins, synthetic components and box trainers. This paper explores the challenges and implications of reproducing the Nuss procedure on both a solely-virtual and a solely-physical environment. This work then describes a roadmap for a hybrid system that employs a best-of-both approach integrating both physical and virtual schemes to achieve a mixed reality implementation of the primary steps of the Nuss procedure.

Surgical planners are used to achieve the optimal outcome for surgery. They are especially desired in procedures where a positive aesthetic outcome is the primary goal, such as the Nuss procedure which is a minimally invasive surgery for correcting pectus excavatum (PE) - a congenital chest wall deformity. Although this procedure is routinely performed, the outcome depends mostly on the correct placement of the bar. It would be beneficial if a surgeon had a chance to practice and review possible strategies for placement of the corrective bar and the associated appearance of the chest. Therefore, we propose a strategy for the development of a Nuss procedure surgical trainer and planner, taking into account the biomechanical properties of the PE ribcage, emerging trends in surgical planners, deformable models, and visualization techniques. Additionally, we present the initial results of before and after surgery surface scans analysis as a means to validate results, comparison of an average chest shape with post-operative to quantify the outcome of the surgery, and the hardware setup of the simulator.

Crop growth programs have been used in decision support systems for farmers for quite some time. However, the problem with these programs is that they are mostly crop specific, and are intended for use by educated personnel. In our paper, we explore the use of a generic crop growth model that can be integrated into a decision support system for farmers. We try and identify variables that have a significant impact on crop yield through sensitivity analysis. Such variables can then be implemented as a part of the decisions available to the users.

Cycle Planning, or Takt Time Planning, is a key method to reduce the variability between different activities within the execution of a construction. A construction section such as a floor consists of multiple work zones, which should have continuous flow and similar cycle times to efficiently coordinate needed resources. However, for concrete structures it is often difficult to find suitable sizes of casting segments and their grouping to work zones. Nowadays, scheduling experts usually use their practical experience to find an intuitive solution for Cycle Planning, which might be sub-optimal. The objective of our research is thus to develop a semiautomatic method to generate optimal work zones for a cycle. The proposed solution is a BIM-based Cycle Planning concept for the cast in-situ construction method of walls. This paper lays the foundation for our concept and evaluates different designs of Cycle Planning layouts to ensure the practical relevance of the generated work zones. We provide an approach to the semiautomatic method: after splitting all wall objects into smaller sections, an optimization algorithm aggregates wall sections into casting segments and casting segments into work zones. © IGLC 2018 - Proceedings of the 26th Annual Conference of the International Group for Lean Construction: Evolving Lean Construction Towards Mature Production Management Across Cultures and Frontiers. Blade tip vortices generated by a helicopter rotor blade are a major source of rotor noise and airframe vibration. The noise and vibration occur when a vortex passes close to, and interacts with, a rotor blade. Accurate prediction of Blade Vortex Interaction (BVI) remains a challenge for Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Although considerable research has been devoted to BVI noise reduction and experimental techniques for measuring the blade tip vortices in a wind tunnel, there are only a handful of post-processing tools available for extracting vortex core lines from CFD simulation data. In order to obtain the vortex core radius, most of these tools require the user to manually select a vortex core to perform the calculation. Furthermore, none of these tools provide an ability to track the growth of a vortex core, which is a measure of how quickly the vortex diffuses over time. This paper introduces an automated approach for tracking the core growth of a blade tip vortex from CFD simulations of rotorcraft in hover. The proposed method enables effective quantification and visualization of blade tip vortices in helicopter rotor wakes. © 2018, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA. Eye tracking has traditionally been used to measure the visual attention of users while performing a task or to aide disabled persons in performing hands-free interactions. The increased accuracy and reduced cost of eye-tracking equipment today makes it feasible to utilize this technology for explicit control tasks, especially in cases where there is confluence between the visual task and control. This paper describes the design of a virtual simulation environment in order to assess the feasibility of using eye-tracking to control the movement and payload of a ground robot during a visual search task. The resulting simulation-based test environment includes a kinematic model of a ground teleoperated robot within a virtual debris-filled, industrial environment with intact and damaged barrels. The operator can steer the robot while independently operating an onboard pan-tilt (PT) camera used to search for damaged containers. The environment supports three methods of control: manual, in which the operator utilizes two joysticks, one for speed/steering and one for camera control, hybrid in which the operator utilizes a joystick for speed/steering control and eye-tracking for camera control, and hands-free in which the operator utilizes gaze for both steering/speed control and camera operation. © 2016 Society for modeling & simulation International (SCS).

Complexity associated with the design of experiments for simulation models can be reduced through visualization. DEVS-Suite, a new generation of the DEVS Tracking Envi-ronment which itself was extended from DEVSJAVA, sup-ports visual design of experiments and introduces simula-tion data visualization. Data generated by the selected models can be collected dynamically and displayed as time-based trajectories. These capabilities complement animation of DEVS model components and their interactions. A ser-vice-oriented software system is modeled to illustrate the novel modeling features for DEVS simulations. Another ex-ample is developed in Ptolemy II and SimEvents to show the reduced visual complexity afforded by DEVS-Suite.
