This paper presents an investigation into fault tolerance for the fine-grained parallel algorithm for computing an incomplete LU factorization. Results concerning the convergence of the algorithm with respect to the occurrence of faults, and the impact of any sub-optimality in the produced incomplete factors in Krylov subspace solvers are given. Numerical tests show that the simple algorithmic changes suggested here can ensure convergence of the fine-grained parallel incomplete factorization, and improve the performance of the use of the resulting factors as preconditioners in Krylov subspace solvers if faults do occur. ©2017 Society for modeling & simulation International (SCS).

A distributed network of sensors leverages its performance by aggregating information gathered by individual sensors through the process of sensor data fusion. Estimating parameters using a centralized scheme entails transporting data from multiple sensors to a centralized fusion center, leading to high network bandwidth consumption. Additionally, fusing raw sensor data from sensors with different sensing modalities may not be feasible. We propose an alternative approach in which each sensor first individually estimates the unknown parameters based solely on its own sensor data. Since sensors may not have a-priori knowledge of the probability distribution of the unknown parameters, each sensor independently computes its individual maximum likelihood estimates. Individual estimates along with their sufficient statistics are then communicated to the fusion center, which treats these estimates as observations to compute the optimum aggregated maximum likelihood estimates by maximizing the new likelihood function of these observations. The proposed technique offers two significant advantages: (i) Since each sensor computes its individual estimates based solely on its own sensed data, it is easily applicable to sensor networks having multi-modal sensors, and (ii) As compared to raw sensor data, communicating estimates and their sufficient statistics to the fusion center requires substantially less network bandwidth. Performance of the aggregated estimates is evaluated through simulations and by computing the Cramer-Rao lower bound.

Capturing and retaining the attention of students while learning complex topics like modeling and simulation is a critical task. In discrete-event simulation (DES), educators rely on examples like queueing systems in fast food restaurants or manufacturing organizations to provide the necessary context for learning. In many instances, these examples fall short in capturing the attention of students, especially at the middle and high school levels. One approach for learning complex topics, like creating simulations, is through gaming. This paper reports on the creative use of regular simulation tools to develop simulation games with entertainment content aimed towards engaging young learners. Two games are presented: one focuses on the use of decision nodes while the second focuses on the use of batch/separator nodes. As part of future work, we propose to use these games to evaluate how much knowledge transfers from an entertainment context to one using simulations for real-life situations.

This article shows that one of the most important directions in the development of information communication systems (ICS) is the construction of new generations of wireless technologies. Including such a direction is important for the creation of information technology support systems and decision-making for the management of critical infrastructure objects. It is shown that increasing the bit rate of the coded video stream is a relevant area of research. Such an advantage is proposed to be formed on the basis of structural and positional coding of segments of dynamic objects. A model for evaluating the informativeness of a transformant is created based on the fact that it is represented in the spectral space according to an uneven diagonal scheme. The construction of the information technology of the code representation of diagonals in the structural-positional space of transformants is considered. © 2024 IEEE.

With rapid development of minimally invasive surgery, proficiency with intricate skills is becoming a greater concern. Consequently, the use of out-of-operating room training has increased significantly through employing high-fidelity and anatomically-correct graphics and haptic interfaces in virtual reality simulations. The effort in developing surgical simulators for generic minimally invasive procedures is still, however, suboptimal for many haptic implementations. A main aspect of such simulations is the pivoting behavior of the surgical tool realized using the haptic device. This paper investigates the limitation of a fullyvirtual implementation of the pivot and the ability to augment haptic interfaces to achieve a natural representation of forces. The design and implementation of two surgical tool pivoting techniques are introduced. Furthermore, a phantom is constructed from synthesized components to be used to measure and reproduce realistic mechanical properties of the anatomical model and pivot behavior. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

A method is proposed to whiten 1-f-type background noise in electroencephalogram data by a nonlinear spectral transformation from the frequency domain to a newly-defined ∝-pitch domain. Based on the α-pitch spectra of steady-state visual evoked potentials, an algorithm called octave-averaged spectral rectification is applied which simultaneously attenuates 1-f noise while enhancing resonance peaks. This has important potential benefits for gamma-band brain-computer interfaces.

This paper presents a new assembly model named open assembly model plus (OAM+) to support legacy systems engineering (LSE). LSE is a collection of technologies for prolonging the life of old mechanical systems. Rapid Re-engineering System (RRES), a subsystem of LSE is geared towards the fast production of redesigned parts customized to the manufacturing capability available. RRES requires the extraction of initial part geometry, parameters, interfacing constraints, kinematic constraints, and technical function. These specifications need to be imprinted on the CAD model before iterative redesign. A CAD data model is needed that can carry all the functional constraints. A detailed comparison of all the available assembly model shows that none of them can provide all these requirements in one place. Assembly feature based, object oriented assembly model OAM+ is developed to meet these requirements in one model. OAM+ can be used to perform kinematic analysis, force analysis and can exchange feature data using N-Rep feature definition language between different modules of RRES. We review the state of the art of process modeling for discrete event simulation, make a number of observations and identify a number of issues that have to be tackled for promoting the use of process modeling in simulation. Process models are of particular interest in model-based simulation engineering approaches where the executable simulation model (code) is obtained with the help of textual or visual models. We present an illustrative example of model-based simulation development.

The most common approach for border patrol operations is the use of human personnel and manned ground vehicles, which is expensive, at times inefficient and sometimes even hazardous to people involved. A better approach would be using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in combination with such ground sensors. This would help improve the overall effectiveness of the surveillance system as a UAV could first scan the alert area before sending in personnel and vehicles, if deemed necessary. We propose border surveillance using multiple Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in combination with alert stations consisting of Unattended Ground Sensors (UGSs) along the border line/fence. Upon detecting an event, an alert would be triggered by any UGS. We simulate this process by reading probability data for different timestamps from a text file. And, based on utility values of each station, two UAVs decide on which alert station to service.
