In this paper, we consider a multi-hop decode-and-forward (DF) relaying transmission in underlay cognitive radio networks. Considering the presence of an eavesdropper that overhears the transmission, we address secure communications of multi-hop wireless communications in terms of physical layer security. In addition, we take in to account the effect of imperfect channel state information (CSI) which is of importance issue in underlay cognitive radio. We analyze the secrecy outage performance of the system over Rayleigh fading channels. In particular, we derive the closed-form expression of the system secrecy outage probability. The analysis results are validated by the Monte-Carlo simulation results. The numerical results show that the imperfect CSI issue does not effect on the security issue of the transmission in underlay cognitive radio networks. On the other hand, the number of hops plays a key role in the physical layer security.

A compact reconfigurable band-notched UWB antenna is presented in this paper. The antenna has a partial ground plane with a rectangular slot to achieve the desired bandwidth for UWB from 3.1GHz to 12GHz. The antenna has a single band-notch frequency which is achieved using a switched U-shaped slot, inserted in the radiating patch. This slot is used to decrease interference with WIMAX applications from 3.3GHz to 3.9GHz. The switching reconfiguration of the proposed antenna is achieved through two ideal switches. Disaster-based failures can seriously disrupt any communication network, making its services unavailable. Such disruptions may be caused by natural disasters, technology-related failures, or malicious attacks, and they are observably increasing in number, intensity and scale. When network services that are a part of critical infrastructure become unavailable, commercial and/or societal problems are inevitable. The issue of limiting the impact of disaster-based failures needs to be urgently addressed due to the lack of suitable mechanisms deployed in the current networks. The COST CA15127 (RECODIS) Action will fill this gap by developing appropriate solutions to provide cost-efficient resilient communications in the presence of disaster-based disruptions considering both existing and emerging communication network architectures. It will be driven by researchers from academia and industry in strong cooperation with governmental bodies. In this paper, we highlight the objectives of RECODIS, its structure, as well as planned outcomes.

Stochastic computing (SC) [1] has received attention recently as a paradigm to improve energy efficiency and fault tolerance. SC uses hardware-generated random bitstreams to represent numbers in the [0:1] range - the number represented is the probability of a bit in the stream being logic-1. The generation of random bitstreams is typically done using linear-feedback shift register (LFSR)-based random number generators. In this paper, we consider how best to design such LFSR-based stochastic bitstream generators, as a means of improving the accuracy of stochastic computing. Three design criteria are evaluated: 1) LFSR seed selection, 2) the utility of scrambling LFSR output bits, and 3) the LFSR polynomials (i.e. locations of the feedback taps) and whether they should be unique vs. uniform across stream generators. For a recently proposed multiplexer-based stochastic logic architecture [8], we demonstrate that careful seed selection can improve accuracy results vs. the use of arbitrarily selected seeds. For example, we show that stochastic logic with seed-optimized 255-bit stream lengths achieves accuracy better than that of using 1023-bit stream lengths with arbitrary seeds: an improvement of over 4x in energy for equivalent accuracy.

A design of compact size and multi-band composite right-left handed meta-material antennas for wireless applications is presented. The proposed antenna consists of single left handed cell. The series interdigital capacitor and short circuit stub which acts as shunt inductor are considered the main block of the proposed antenna. The proposed antenna is designed to operate at different frequency bands. Because of the nonlinearity of the left handed region of the composite right left handed transmission line, the compactness of the antenna has been achieved. The proposed antenna has compact size (its size is only 28 × 22 mm 2 ). The design represents size reduction of approximately 60 % compared to conventional patch antennas operating at the same frequencies. The antenna is designed, simulated and measured. A good agreement is achieved between the measured and simulated results.

In this paper, we consider a dual-hop decode-and-forward (DF) relaying network, where relays operate based on harvested energy from radio frequency (RF) radiation. Considering time switching-based relaying mechanism, we propose a relay selection protocol, where the relay having the highest harvested energy will forward the received signal towards the destination. We investigate the system performance in terms of outage probability over Rayleigh fading channels. In particular, we derive the analytical expression of the system outage probability and the closed-form expression of its lower bound of the proposed protocol. The analysis results are validated by the Monte-Carlo simulation results. The numerical results show that the proposed relay selection and the number of relays have significant impacts on the system outage probability. © 2015 IEEE.

Color image coding by inverse demosaicing, which exploits the implicit Bayer structure in color images, has a potential to achieve superior performance compared to conventional color image coding methods. The previous framework of inverse demosaicing was limited to lossless and near-lossless data compression, while this paper explores its adaptation to lossy compression. To cope with distortions due to lossy compression, we propose a regularization approach using side color information for the Bayer recovery problem in the decoder. Thanks to careful design of the regularization, the resulting Bayer recovery problem becomes an unconstrained quadratic programming problem, and thus several efficient solvers can be used. A numerical example demonstrates the efficacy of our approach. It can significantly reduce distortions in the recovery of the Bayer data and keep the total bit rate.

We describe a lightweight open-source MIPS-ISA processor, wherein performance and area can be flexibly traded-off with one another. The processor contains an ultra-low-cost co-processor capable of executing programs comprised of SUBLEQ instructions (subtract and branch if the difference is ≤ 0), which recent work has shown to be sufficient for any computation. Area/performance trade-offs are realized by implementing a user-selectable subset of MIPS instructions with functionally equivalent SUBLEQ sub-routines that run on the coprocessor. Silicon area is reduced as more MIPS instructions are implemented with the co-processor, rather than "natively" using functional units within the host MIPS. The processor is described in the C language and synthesized to an FPGA hardware implementation with high-level synthesis (HLS). Since it is specified at a high level of abstraction, it is straightforward to tailor to any application. As such, the processor can be viewed as a family of processors with different area/performance/power characteristics. In an experimental study, we compare a variety of processor variants, wherein different subsets of MIPS instructions are handled by the co-processor. We also compare the proposed synthesizable processor with a hand-designed 5-pipeline-stage MIPS implementation, and achieve area reductions ranging from 2.5 - 4×.

Recent natural disasters have revealed that emergency networks presently cannot disseminate the necessary disaster information, making it difficult to deploy and coordinate relief operations. These disasters have reinforced the knowledge that telecommunication networks constitute a critical infrastructure of our society, and the urgency in establishing protection mechanisms against disaster-based disruptions. Hence, it is important to have emergency networks able to maintain sustainable communication in disaster areas. Moreover, the network architecture should be designed so that network connectivity is maintained among nodes outside of the impacted area, while ensuring that services for costumers not in the affected area suffer minimal impact. As a first step towards achieving disaster resilience, the RECODIS project was formed, and its Working Group 1 members conducted a comprehensive literature survey on “strategies for communication networks to protect against large-scale natural disasters,” which is summarized in this article.

As a non-invasive angle closure glaucoma diagnosis procedure, Van Herick's slit-lamp Limbal Anterior Chamber dept. Estimation (LACDE) technique is preferably the current standard screening method preliminarily performed at hospitals and eye clinics. However, accuracy of dept. estimation is very much dependent on the slit projection distance from the limbus (LD). This study investigated the relation and designed a parametric model to reduce the inconsistencies between results and improving the Van Herick's method accuracy. Additionally, two different types of classifiers such as Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Decision Tree with addition of LD as a predictor were trained and tested for comparison with parametric model. In the end acquired results clearly showed the effectiveness of LD consideration in LACDE, which lead to improvement in the experimental results.
