This paper investigates the use of effective and flexible fast-convolution (FC) filtering scheme for multiplexing OFDM resource blocks (RBs) in a spectrally well-localized manner. The scheme is able to effectively suppress interference leakage between adjacent RBs, thus supporting asynchronous operation and independent waveform parametrization of RBs. This is considered as an important feature in 5G waveform development for effectively supporting diversified service characteristics. Our approach is applicable for cyclic prefix or zero prefix based OFDM and the corresponding OFDM based single-carrier (SC-FDMA) waveforms. It is also possible to generate and process traditional Nyquist pulse shaping based single-carrier waveforms and filter bank multicarrier waveforms using the same FC processing engine, accommodating different waveforms simultaneously in different RBs. Our case study is based on proposed numerology for 5G cm-wave communications utilizing flexible time-division duplexing principle. While using RBs of 160 OFDM subcarriers, it is enough to deactivate 3 to 5 subcarriers out of each RB as guardbands to effectively suppress interference leakage between RBs.

This work presents a dual-band high-gain metamaterial radome which can increase antenna gain. This radome operates at the WiMAX (3.5GHz) band and the WiFi (5.8GHz) band. The refractive index of this radome is designed to near zero. The radiation beamwidth of antenna becomes small and the antenna gain is increasing. The size of this radome is 90 mm × 90 mm. This radome improves antenna gain 2.6 dB and 5.7 dB at 3.57GHz and 5.95 GHz respectively. © 2015 IEEE.

Banknote identification systems, with their wide applications in Automated Teller Machines (ATMs), vending machines and currency recognition aids for the visually impaired, are one of the most widely researched fields today. The present paper proposes a novel technique for recognition of Indian currency banknotes by adopting a modular approach. The proposed work extracts distinct and unique features of Indian currency notes such as central numeral, RBI seal, colour band and identification mark for the visually impaired and employs algorithms optimized for the detection of each specific feature. The proposed technique has been evaluated over a large data set for recognition of Indian banknotes of various denominations and physical conditions including new notes, wrinkled notes and non-uniform illumination. Thorough analysis yields a high true positive rate (desired feature identified correctly) of 95.11% and a low false positive rate (undesired feature recognition minimized) of 0.09765% for emblem recognition, an accuracy of 97.02% for central numeral detection, and 100% accuracies for both recognition of identification mark and colour matching in CIE LAB colour space.

Multi-cycling is a well-known strategy to improve performance in digital design, wherein the required time for selected combinational paths is lengthened to multiple clock cycles (rather than just one). The approach can be applied to paths associated with computations whose results are not needed immediately - such paths are allowed multiple clock cycles to “complete”, reducing the opportunity for them to form the critical path of the circuit. In this paper, we consider multi-cycling in the high-level synthesis context (HLS) and use software profiling to guide multi-cycling optimizations. Specifically, prior to HLS, we execute the program in software with typical datasets to gather data on the number of times each code segment executes. During HLS, we then extend the schedule for infrequently executed code segments and apply multi-cycling to the dilated schedules, which exhibit greater opportunities for multi-cycling. In essence, our approach ensures that non-frequently executed code segments will not form the critical path of the HLS-generated circuit. In an experimental study targeting the Altera Stratix IV FPGA, we evaluate the impact on speed performance and area for both traditional multi-cycling, as well as the proposed software profiling-driven multi-cycling, and show that profiling-driven multi-cycling leads to an average speedup of over 10% across 13 benchmark circuits, with some circuit speedups in excess of 30%. Circuit area is reduced by 11%, yielding a mean 20% improvement in area-delay product.

In recent years, Botnets have become an important security problem on the Internet. Botnets have been used for many attacks, such as banking information theft, spam, distributed denial-of-service, identity theft and phishing. Then, they have been proposed as a major research topic in the network security. Although there are several surveys on the Botnets, they usually do not include a complete review on Botnet phenomenon. This paper is a survey on Botnets and provides a brief of classifications, techniques and algorithms of Botnet detection and defense. In this survey, we provide a comparison on existing research. We present an overview of studies on Botnet and discuss in detail including topologies, architectures, communication protocols, infection mechanisms, attacks, purposes, prevention techniques, detection sources and data, detection techniques and algorithms, and response techniques.

Despite the increasing capabilities, mobile devices still cannot satisfy the computation requirement of many applications. Intuitively, this can be solved by outsourcing tasks to external resources such as a remote server, cloud, or closely deployed cloudlet. However, all of them require extra infrastructures. In this paper, we consider a proximate-mobile-device based communication system in which all tasks and resources are under the control of a central scheduler. We propose a friendship-based task scheduling algorithm to address the contentions when resources are not sufficient. We also present two attack models including the denial-of-service (DoS) attack and the collusion attack. We evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm along with another contribution-based task scheduling algorithm through extensive experiments.

The explosive growth of new multimedia applications over mobile networks has attracted intensive research over the years. The main problem in this area is posed by the immense data rate required for multimedia applications in conjunction with the scarcity of wireless resources. To alleviate this shortcoming, this paper proposes combining mobility management and application layer filtering in order to optimize and maintain video quality. The design of the proposed solution is described in dept., as well as the integration of this approach within the LTE Evolved Packet Core architecture. Finally, experimental results are presented to demonstrate the performance of the proposed mechanism.

The problem of optimal Power Policy (PP) design for hybrid interweave/underlay Cognitive Radio (CR) systems is investigated, in the presence of imperfect Spectrum Sensing (SS). A limited Channel State Information at the Transmitter (CSIT) scenario is considered, that has never been studied before, where the Secondary Transmitter (STx) uses combined instantaneous and statistical CSIT. Given such CSIT, the optimal PP with the aim of maximizing the average transmission rate of the CR system, subject to a constraint on the average interference caused by STx transmission to the primary system, is found. The derived PP is then exploited for the development of an iterative framework for the problem of jointly optimizing the sensing time and the applied PP. By means of simulations, it is shown that the proposed joint SS and PP optimization framework offers a clear gain in terms of the achievable rate of the CR system, with respect to conventional underlay and interweave CR systems, especially for intermediate values of the average interference constraint and also for different primary user activity regimes.

Sometimes mental stress needs to be control as it results in different dangerous suffering. Timely mental stress detection can help to prevent stress related health problems. The aim of this paper is to design an IoT base wearable, cost effective and low power smart band for health care that detect mental stress based on skin conductance. This band can monitor user's mental stress continuously and transmit the stress related data wirelessly to user's smart phone. It not only help the users in better understanding their stress patterns but also provide the physician with reliable data for a much better treatment. Inputs to this device are various signals from different sensors. By intelligently analyzing the correlation between these signals using machine learning algorithm, this band predicts that whether the subject is suffering from stress or not.

Dataflow models of computation are widely used for modeling signal processing systems. These models have inherent concurrency and the task (actor) execution depends only on the availability of the input data (tokens). This property of dataflow models can be exploited for dynamic power management by automatically switching off the actors with no available input tokens. This idea is applied in this paper for efficient modeling and implementation of an adaptive Digital Predistortion (DPD) filter. The DPD filter is required to operate with different profiles under varying operation scenarios, hence requiring a methodology to manage power dynamically. The paper presents a dataflow model for Adaptive Digital Predistortion based on the Core Functional Dataflow (CFDF) model of computation using the Light Weight Dataflow (LWDF) programming methodology. The paper also provides a methodology for dynamic power management under the dataflow paradigm. To the authors' best knowledge, this work is the first to integrate dataflow-based power management systematically in the context of adaptive DPD implementation.
