The ultra-wideband (UWB) transmitters require bulky filter-banks to suppress harmonics at power amplifier (PA) output. This paper presents a digitally supported feed-forward (DSFF) harmonic cancellation scheme to allow re-configurability in terms of frequency and compact size. The proposed scheme is implemented in a low cost FPGA based measurement setup suitable for base-stations. As a case study, cancellation of second harmonic signal with 27 dBc adjacent channel power ratio is reported.

Localization of sources of brain electrical activity from electroencephalographic and magnetoencephalographic recordings is an ill-posed inverse problem. Therefore, the best one can hope for is to derive a source localization method which is guaranteed to find sources belonging to the set of possible solutions to this problem. Recently, a few methods with this property have been proposed as a non-trivial generalizations of the classical neural activity index based on the linearly constrained minimum-variance (LCMV) spatial filtering technique. In this paper we propose a family of reduced-rank activity indices achieving maximum value when evaluated at true source locations for uncorrelated dipole sources and any nonzero rank constraint. This fact shows in particular that this key property is not confined to a selected few activity indices. We present a series of numerical simulations evaluating localization performance of the proposed activity indices. We also give an overview of areas of future research which should be considered as an extension of the results of this paper. In particular, we discuss how new families of activity indices can be derived based on the proposed technique. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.

This paper proposes a new two-dimensional antidictionary coding for a given rectangle. An antidictionary is the set of all the minimal forbidden rectangles for an input rectangle. The proposed encoder outputs a pair of an antidictionary and a unique polyomino which appears only once in an input rectangle as a codeword. The input rectangle can be decoded from the pair. Both the encoding and decoding schemes do not require line-scanning and the neighbors of a decoded rectangle can be reproduced in an arbitrary order. Moreover, we show that there is a one-to-one correspondence between a rectangle and an antidictionary.

Increasing the flexibility in spectrum access is a key to enhanced efficiency in radio spectrum utilization. Noncontiguous carrier aggregation (CA) is one enabling technology towards more flexible spectrum access, but can also lead to serious implementation challenges in terms of transmitter lin-earity. Especially when a single power amplifier (PA) is deployed for all carriers, serious intermodulation components will rise which can easily limit the maximum transmit power. In this paper, a low-complexity digital predistortion (DPD) solution is developed to reduce the most critical spurious components at the PA output, opposed to more classical full bandwidth linearization. The developed concept and associated parameter learning and optimization are particularly tailored towards mobile devices, building on limited narrowband feedback receiver with reduced instrumentation complexity and reduced-rate DPD processing. The developed DPD solution can handle PAs with substantial memory effects, and is verified with extensive simulation examples in various non-contiguous carrier aggregation scenarios and practical PA models with memory.

In this paper, we address the issue of the real-time implementation of an artificial stereo audio extension method that provides stereophonic audio from a mono audio source. First, the floating-point arithmetic programming of the method is performed. Then, the computationally complex parts of the floating-point operations are converted into fixed-point operations to allow them to operate in real time. The performance of a real-time implementation is evaluated by measuring the processing time and root mean square (RMS) value. Consequently, it is shown that partial fixed-point arithmetic programming reduces the processing time by 48.7%, with an RMS value of-90.50 dB, compared to the floating-point arithmetic programming.

In this paper, DWT-Based Multi-Adaptive Image Coding (DBMAIC) is proposed to increase compression performance for Frame Memory Reduction in LCD Overdrive. The DBMAIC development is based on DWT-Based Adaptive Mode Selection (DAMS)[9] integrated with Adaptive-Threshold Technique (ATT). ATT is proposed to reduce blocking effect and increase adaptability of DAMS. Experimental results show that the performance of the proposed method is much better than DAMS and that of conventional schemes. © 2013 IEEE.

In cognitive spectrum sharing systems, interference probability (IP) is one of the most important performance metrics illustrating the interference level at the primary network. In this paper, the interference probability of the primary network due to secondary underlay partial relay selection networks is investigated under the assumption of imperfect channel state information (CSI) of interference links. Numerical results show that it depends not only on the correlation efficient of interference links but also on the transmit power of secondary transmitters. It is also shown that the back-off technique is an efficient approach to guarantee the given quality of service (QoS) of the primary network. For secondary networks, we derive the outage probability over Rayleigh fading channels. Monte-Carlo simulations are performed to verify the correctness of the analysis. © 2013 IEEE.

Human Mobility Models (HMMs) have become increasingly relevant in different application domains including networks designed for data dissemination protocols. Most existing HMMs consider the temporal and spatial features of human mobility. In addition, many recent HMMs based on social networks have begun to take into account social factors, which naturally influence the results of the HMMs. Unfortunately, these mobility models do not focus on the impact of several important social factors that can affect a person's actions, such as language, citizenship, and culture. This paper introduces a hybrid human mobility model that integrates social behavior, cultural and language factors into HMMs in order to measure their effect on human mobility, as well as temporal and spatial features. Results demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed model. © 2013 ICST.

Dynamic and flexible RF spectrum access through software-defined radio technologies is known to be limited by transmitter RF impairments, most notably spurious emissions due to mixer I/Q imbalance and power amplifier nonlinearity. In this article, a novel digital predistortion structure is developed for joint mitigation of frequency-dependent I/Q imbalance and dynamic nonlinear effects of amplifiers in wideband direct-conversion radio transmitters. The developed structure consists of two Volterra series in parallel, with built-in sparsity in the kernels, and is shown to be linear in parameters thus requiring only one feedback path for joint parameter identification. Extensive simulation results demonstrate significant improvements in transmitter linearization performance, compared to state-of-the-art memory polynomial based linearizers. Thus, the developed predistortion solution can be seen as one key enabling technique towards practical deployment of SDR technology with digitally-enhanced wideband RF front-ends.
